I’m 51, and I am a low hc from the 6,000-6,500 tee boxes that I normally play from. I’ve always tried to minimize forearm rotation in my swing. I basically cock the wrists BACK, and then release them forward through impact. This creates a very predictable shot towards target, but strike, and distance kinda suffer. When I’ve experimented with more forearm rotation, the left, and right dispersion feels like a surprise, every time I hit a shot. Don’t get me wrong… I hit it lower, and further, and the strike feels amazing. I just can’t stand to NOT be able to purposely, and precisely hit my target. I’m 6’2”, 215lbs, and have always been very athletic. However, I don’t hit the ball as far as I should because of my technique of trying to keep the face square to the arc. My swing feels restricted, and it’s hard to repeat “strike” some days, because of this.

Bryson DeChambeau commented on this exact thing in his video with Paige Spiranic, he says to think of the back of your left hand hitting a wall at the bottom of the swing as to not over/under rotate. Might be worth trying

Worked this yesterday and I was getting some crazy clubhead speed compared what I was doing before when solely releasing with body only. Pushing with trail arm and that clubhead starts moving like never before. Can't wait to test this on course. Fixes also poor strikes.

Lately I have visualized the golf swing as somewhat analogous to the operation to the teubuchet a medieval catapult weapon. The trebuchet had a long lever arm and connected to the end of the arm was a sling which held the projectile. The lever was moved by a counterweight and at the end of the swing the potential energy of the lever arm was converted into kinetic energy to the sling and the projectile was thrown a long way. So in the golf swing I visualize the arms as the lever and the sling as the wrist and hands. When you take the club back to the top you store potential energy. if you then let the arms fall toward the ball and just before you hit the ball let the hand and wrist snap through the ball you are creating a large amount of kinetic energy that can be applied to the club and the ball. Obviously you cannot stop the arms in the golf swing like the trebuchet lever, but slowing them significantly should allow for maximum transfer of energy to the club. Also for the trebuchet the maximum energy transfer was found when the lever was approximately a 4 to 1 to the sling in length. If you measure your wrist to finger tips and then compare it to your wrist to shoulder it is somewhat close to this ratio. If you want to test this out you can get an old club in an open area and see how far you van toss it using this concept.

Hi Eric, I have the hanger, but really don't know how to use it properly. I understand that green bar supposed to be connected to your left forearm. I did it by turn my right hand, wrist or maybe perhaps my right forearm. It turns my clubface way too shut through impact. Ball would goes far, but end up on the left side of field. I guess it is not a draw more like pull hook.

There are two things that I have trouble understanding. One is the wrist cock. Do you make the uncocking motion a deliberate movement? A hit, if you will? And is it an up and down motion, or down the line? Or, is it better to have loose, or relaxed wrists? The other is forearm rotation. Should you wait as long as you can until just before impact to let the arms rotate? A few years back I got into rotating my forearms for more power. I worked great for a while But, I would lose 4 or 5 balls out of bounds left every round. Thanks, Eric! Your videos are some of the best on youtube!

Hey! Good questions...will answer each below One is the wrist cock. Do you make the uncocking motion a deliberate movement? A hit, if you will? ----for ANY part of the swing the answer will be the same here. If you already do it automatically then it requires no extra thought.....if you dont....then it does. And is it an up and down motion, or down the line? -It is up and down (radial and ulnar) but also forward (extension) Or, is it better to have loose, or relaxed wrists? -Wont be the same for everyone....grip pressure thoughts here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIKVl4mFrZulm5o&pp=ygUaRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGdyaXAgcHJlc3N1cmU%3D Should you wait as long as you can until just before impact to let the arms rotate? -Do it the whole time....details here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXTWaKBjm7R8Y68&pp=ygUZRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGFybSByb3RhdGlvbg%3D%3D

Hi Eric - The concept you are describing at about 1:50 - the working towards extension, and often you see people do it too early. Would you say the longer the club (4i, 5i, woods), the further you should drive your hands towards the target before releasing that angle? I feel like with my longer clubs I really need to hold on extending the wrists way longer throughout the process. To the point where I am super conscious of it. OR would you say the feel should be the same with each length of club?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 ай бұрын
Yeah great question.......so there's layers to this answer.... technically speaking it would be the opposite Could hold longer with shorter clubs because they have MORE LOFT.....so you would have more shaft lean to off set that Longer clubs have LESS loft so you would release EARLY so you have enough loft at impact Of course speed matters......faster speed can get away with less loft/more shaft lean. Less speed need more loft/less shaft lean ( the key there is still being able to hit ball first) Now the other variables is the longer clubs with less loft are the MOST DIFFICULT to hit.....so ams who release TOO early tend to release EVEN EARLIER with them to subconsciously try and get the ball in the air......so from that perspective I could see how you would need to FEEL like you hold longer to offset that..... But in reality thats not happening Hope that helps
@randall2155
@randall2155 3 ай бұрын
@@CogornoGolf Man I really appreciate the thorough answer. That makes sense - wouldnt want to add TOO MUCH dynamic loft to a long club that already doesn't have a ton a loft. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

In other videos you teach the right wrist looking more the golf ball going back and through impact, but this video you rotate forearms more, which is correct?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 ай бұрын
They both are! The trail wrist has to RELEASE......AND ROTATE......at some point. what the player needs to FEEL depends on where they are coming from. There absolutely needs to be rotation.....no matter what......just HOW MUCH.....depends on your club face coming in. The more closed it already is the less rotation needed. The less closed the more rotation needed. But all have it More on that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXTWaKBjm7R8Y68&pp=ygUjRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIEdvbGYgbGVmdCBhcm0gcm90YXRpb24%3D

Thanks Eric - another great vid - As I am standing in my office making air swings I realized something, but want to confirm. If I have more body rotation it took less supination to have the back of my left hand in the position you show on the through swing and follow through. The less my body moved the more supination it required? I feel like an idiot for asking but is that an accurate way to depict it when trying to work matchups for my physiology?
@CogornoGolf

Thats correct! But also remember the air swings and real swings with a ball will likely not be the same.....

To be honest, I think the larger problem for most golfers nowadays (thanks to this awful “concept” of lag) is that most golfers are holding the angle from shaft paralell through impact in order to simulate this idea of a leaned shaft or “lag” at impact. Its now a problem of not releasing the wrists soon enough!!!! Its an awful problem and even worse than early extension. Folks are so afraid to do anything with the wrists at all……As Tiger says, Release it Earlier!!!!
