One of your BEST videos yet! Right side bend through impact is absolutely one of the key moves to becoming a scratch player. Every good player does this. They watch their initial ball flight with a tilted view. You even mentioned the second most important key to scratch. Wrist positions. Knuckles down on your left hand = right wrist back. Hold your hands out like you’re gripping a club. Now, bow your left wrist. Notice how the right wrist bends back. Now, do it again. Bend your right wrist back. Notice how the left wrist bows. The point is…. You can “feel” this with either hand during your swing. The results are the same. Side note… Both hands should feel cocked “down”, through impact. I honestly think that these 2 things(right side bend, and wrist conditions) are the differences between mid-handicap players, and scratch players.

People who stand up are essentially playing tug-of-war with the inertia of the club instead of actually "swinging" it. It's often caused by a player trying to hit the ball as hard and far as they possibly can. Most people never discover they can actually hit the ball just as far with much less effort but greater efficiency. Everyone always wants to hit the ball as far as possible but learning to hit the ball efficiently sends the ball just as far with far less effort. An excellent drill is learning to hit a 7 or 8 iron just over 100 yards and then slowly increase the distance the ball goes until you reach your normal carry. Everyone loves a lazy and efficient golf swing but rarely do people attempt to learn how to do it. With efficiency comes confidence and with confidence comes competence and the goal in golf is to become "confidently competent." Excellent video Eric!

Eric, your lessons are not only awesome, and I needed exactly this one, but I admire the way your teaching evolves with techniques such as "opposites" and "exaggeration". A great one Eric! I literally advise golfers who ask about the swing, if your trail arm is extending early in the downswing, you are doing it WRONG. This is the #1 (all other positions correct) that will determine a more successful swing. Bent trail arm at impact MEANS you will have to bend (stay) down through impact to get to the ball. Thanks again.

OK Eric another light bulb video...outstanding instruction. SO resolving the issue of the lowering and digging into the ground concern of your student is exactly my concern. This right arm and wrist bent back making up for the lowering feel is a very very helpful idea. So would it be right to say that this feels like i am FLATENNING the bottom of the arc ? Feels more like a longer "scrape" across the turf?

This is a great drill that definitely helped me, as almost all of Eric's videos do. Another thing that helped was standing more upright at setup, then working down towards the ball. Most people bend the wrong way or have too much bend at setup and then they inevitably stand up through the ball. You should start tall, stay tall through the backswing, then bend down/use side bend like Eric talks about, to get down to the ball and really compress it.

Excellent video. I've had this problem forever (and didn't realize it until the last couple years). Managed to play respectably due to reasonable strength and decent hand eye coordination. Now that I understand what to do, I'm old and inflexible. Getting that side bend is very tough. This tip/drill is great because it seems like it's taking the mechanics of trying to create the side bend out of the equation just by forcing you to "go down and get the ball". Can't wait to try it!

Hi Eric, fantastic advice, thank you! I'm 74, right handed and just getting back into golf after 25 years lay-off! Used to play off 2 when I was in my 20's and relate exactly to your advice and suggestions. My return has unfortunately been hampered by breaking my right ankle last year and in part that has me hesitant to put changes of weight on my right foot and then I partly loosing my balance! I'm going up the club range here in Seaford on the south coast of the UK tomorrow and will certainly be using your drill - very good and logical, well done! Thanks again, - will keep you posted as to how it works out, do you have any "weight transfer" and balance drills please? John🙂

Another excellent instruction, especially if viewed with other recent ones like your Tilt Tilt and Turn one. I don't think many players, me included, stand up intentionally. In some ways, it is in part a reaction to the centrifugal force created by the downswing. It may be surprising, but according to a centrifugal force calculator I looked up, a 275 gram iron club head on a 37 inch shaft swung at 92 mph will have a force of 111.27 foot-pounds. So it is understandable that there can be a natural tendency for the body to resist the centrifugal force by pulling back and standing up. Maintaining the spine angle while turning is of course easier for someone young and flexible than for an 82 year old senior like me, even though I'm in good condition and have played for over 60 years. It can also be a lot to keep all the various elements in mind during the swing, namely to tilt and turn, maintain posture, plus to begin shifting one's weight on to the lead leg early, before the end of the backswing, and let the hips shift toward the target, and to swing up with the left or lead shoulder. Done right, it works, so your advice is great. But it's also pretty easy to hit fat if you don't do all these things. Two other observations. My clubs were actually built for someone else and are a half inch long. Would it be right to think that this could also influence one to stand up? Second, in one of your other excellent videos, you told the client/student he was standing too close to the ball and you had him address the ball, then you held the club head in place while telling him to back up several inches and keep his weight on the balls of his feet. Once you pointed this out, I watched several pros who produce videos as they swing and noticed that they do in fact tend to lean a bit further forward than I have been doing. It makes total sense that if you are standing too close to the ball, you will stand up during the downswing to avoid hitting behind the ball. You can of course stand too far from the ball. As you showed that student, there is a correct distance that will allow you to hold your spine angle, your posture, while making good contact.

Eric, great instruction as usual. Could you do a video combining these ideas with your long arc follow through drill? A golfer might stay level but must also not stay in torso flexion too long or let the chest hub wander forward at impact or too much after impact. This combination chest rotation, chest extension, and braking through impact is what I see you and the pros do. A video with your take on it would be sweet!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 ай бұрын
Thanks Jim! Honestly I can make this really simple.... If you do ALL......all...of the parts of the long arc follow through correctly.....you will do the stuff in this video AUTOMATICALLY!
@jimgeorge72
@jimgeorge72 6 ай бұрын
I agree. You have definitely taught all the key moves and they work! Your videos have helped me see that 3D spinal motion is the secret sauce. It rotates, it left-right bends, and it front-back bends…simultaneously and at the correct time. Spinal rotation is pretty straightforward, it rotates clockwise during the backswing and counterclockwise during the downswing and follow through. Spinal side bend is also pretty straightforward, the spine left side bends during the backswing and right side bends during the downswing. But the front-back bending (flexion-extension) is so very unique! The spine moves quickly in and out of front-back bend at key times, through transition and through impact. Hovland shows it off perfectly. In transition (from backswing to downswing), he goes from spinal flexion to spinal extension to spinal flexion. Chest down, to chest up, to chest down. Then before and after impact he again goes from spinal flexion to spinal extension to spinal flexion (or back to neutral) after the two arms straight position. Again, chest down to chest up to chest down (or neutral to the finish). Does it work? I think so. I added 30 yards to my drives. Thanks EC! PS: This matches the swing’s purposes too. The spinal flexion-to-extension in the late backswing helps to increase swing depth, makes it easier to recenter the weight pressure (fix the hang back fault), and primes the spine for the downswing. The spinal extension-to-flexion in the early downswing helps to move arms and club faster, promotes a U-shaped swing arc, and makes it easier to guide the direction of the arm motion. The spinal flexion-to-extension in the mid to late downswing to follow through helps to slow down the arm motion (which makes the club move faster), makes the bottom of arc less steep (a flatter U-shaped bottom), and helps to slow the swing down in the follow through making for a safer deceleration phase. Holy moley, the 3D moving spine drives the swing!

Great drill. No problem doing this with shortened grip. I struggle with normal grip. Especially tiger on iron shot he will waggle above the ball alot of others do but it's a part of the waggle. so, if youre closer to the ball what's happened to the extra (spare) length compared to setup? Has it been replaced by the shaft lean? ah, you answered this later in the video!

Same ideas here for all clubs! Typically, students will have to exaggerate MORE as the clubs get longer.

Hey Eric, would this also help force you to release the club? I struggle with both standing up and holding on too long resulting in a lot of thin or weak shots blocked to the right.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 ай бұрын
MAYBE Ryan.....but not for sure, no. Wish I could say yes :) But too many other variables. If you're holding on too long you likely need to address that directly. Prob some form of tossing or throwing the club RIGHT AWAY to start downswing (FEEL not real). Wider downswing arc.

I have the opposite problem where my head raises and I sort of stand up on my backswing. I try the drill Tiger does where you squat and get low on the back swing but not sure if that's the solution
@ralphsomack7110

You can solve this problem by tilting your left shoulder down more on the backswing with weight forward
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 ай бұрын
Yeah agreed with Ralph.....if you're standing up in backswing you need 1. More left side bend (shoulder down) 2. Make sure your hips aren't moving IN toward ball These should help kzbin.info/www/bejne/b37ZY2ljgcd8jLM&pp=ygUpRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgc2lkZSBiZW5kIHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd24%3D kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2GlnWx4ZpVkZtE&pp=ygUpRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgc2lkZSBiZW5kIHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd24%3D kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYfGY6iCjdOHrs0&pp=ygUpRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgc2lkZSBiZW5kIHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd24%3D kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6WwhqWafdB7o5Y&pp=ygUpRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgc2lkZSBiZW5kIHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd24%3D

That explains why it never felt comfortable when I had a choke down shot the past 50 years of playing. Getting that right side bend hurts a bit but that’s the ticket to hit solid shots. I use a drill where I hold a club in my left hand pointing down and then try to hit a short chip only using the right hand only. You are forced to have side bend and your left shoulder will have the tilt as the pros. A proper left hip clearing is automatic.

Every good swing will technically have "standing up"/extension through the ball...but it's paired with rotation and trail side bend to keep the body's inclination to the ground stable👍

Again when you look at all 3 from the behind view, you can see how all 3 have the right knee, hip, shoulder aligned. When you get to that position the everything else takes care of itself. Don't get why instructors don't teach from that position back. Then you follow thru from there and you get the weight forward,sidebend, plane ,compression.

:) Hey Tom! I know you're liking that trail side move! I will say this....I've been studying golf swing stuff for about 15 years or so now... And every time I think I've found "the answer" I always realize later that what is MAGIC for ME....or SOMEONE.....wont be for EVERYONE. I hear ya....the moves you are mentioning are IMPORTANT! But so are a lot of other things in the swing :) hope you are well

Just have such an upright posture with good rounded, stacked shoulders, and upright turn that you have to go down to the ball to get it. Bend over at address, stand up during the swing. Stand up at address, bend over during the swing.

Some players like Bryson D prefers a more upright stance and a steeper swing. It's hard to argue there's only one way to strike a ball considering Bryson is probably a top 5 in the world player.

Hi Eric I’m so great full for your video. Exactly my issue. I’m 66 and recently back to golf after many years raising kids and working on a career. So desk work and sedentary lifestyle featured. In my playing days, say 30 years ago, I was a high teens player. These days when I start my round I tend to play pretty well for 9 holes. By hole 10 my back is screaming and I start standing. Toping and hooking becomes the norm. Take yesterday for example. 18 front 9, 10 pts back 9. This is week in week out. Today is a recovery day with lost of painkillers. No way I could keep posture no matter how hard I try. Please help!

Unfortunately there is never a fix that is one size fits all thing. I admit I tend to rise up in my downswing and sometimes I top the ball and sometimes I miss it entirely. But when I focus on not rising up during the backswing...meaning trying to keep my body from moving upward during the downswing, I usually end of driving the club into the ground about 1 to 3 inches behind the ball and totally blowing the shot. What is the fix for that?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 ай бұрын
100% agreed Andrew----big key to figure out any reasons earlier causing the issue. I always mention the importance in working with coach for this to identify for you and the common ones that would cause it 1. Poor setup posture (hips back) 2. Steep downswing shaft 3. Face open On the fix....I also mention that in the video if you watch back.... 1. Shorten right arm and bend back right wrist more in downswing 2. Make sure you are turned (rotated enough) I also went over that in more detail in this older one here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpPPppZmjqiqoqc&pp=ygUgRXJpYyBjb2dvcm5vIG1hdGNoIGFybXMgYW5kIGJvZHk%3D And here in detail: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6Wqg5lpe7iMaZY&pp=ygUbRXJpYyBjb2dvcm5vIGJvZHkgc3RheSBkb3du Hope those help!

I would say you’re not getting your weight to your left side. Think about throwing a ball. We usually step forward with our lead foot and plant it before we come forward with our arm with the ball. Do the same thing, and try to hit one ball in front of the ball on the ground. This works on any club you hit the ball while on the ground or a very short tee, except the driver, that you want to hit up on. Hope this helps you. It help me years ago, and I’ve pass this on to countless others, that it’s also helped…

Standing up is your bodies natural way of counterbalancing. It's perfectly normal to stand up and that doesn't have to be a problem. Most of us spend way too much time trying to learn unnatural body movements, when we should be focusing on learning ways to hit the ball straight using natural movements.
