The 5 star rating I was going to give the gas maintenance company for work they did yesterday, went down, because reigniting the water heater should be part of maintenance 101. Put everything back the way you found it! It's possible they didn't say anything to get another service call. I'm not replacing my 23 year old water heater with a new one that lasts 3 years!

Thank you so much for the helpful info! We had a possible gas leak and the gas provider turned of the gas temporarily. Apparently he didn't know how to relight it and didn't mention it...so unknowingly the burners were not lit properly. As a result no hot water 😒 I looked at every possible reason why it could be malfunctioning and nearly ordered a very expensive part.....but you saved the day with these wonderful instructions on how to light it the proper way. Thank you more than I could ever express..

Thank you for the video. The gas company said I have gas coming in, but, no igniter spark. Called the contractor. Instead, I bought the whole ignition kit from Amazon but not fit. Then, I changed the thermo couple. I haven’t received the igniter ordered from eBay(long waiting). With all these trouble, now, I know I can just light up the pilot by a lighter just like you are using(I can get it from Dollar Store)

Thank you for this video. I let all my propane run out and therefore had a difficult time lighting as there was most likely air in the line. I had to hold the pilot light button down for at least 2 minute a few times to bring the gas to the water heater, finally on the second try of doing this for a couple minutes each time I got a light odor of propane, I turned it to off for 5 minutes like you said so the gas would dissipate and then tried lighting per your instructions. I had to put my flame right on the pilot to get it to light and it did, my flame however wasn’t as big but it lit, so thank you.

I called State Water Heater tech support on GS6-30-OCT 250 pilot light problem on NEW unit. Patient gentleman provided suggestions. Re-bleed gas line at uniit. ALSO located small small Arc of igniter. Look for arc in low light conditions outside unit's window. It will be at end of shiney tube a tad left-center of window. Good luck!! Thanks for vid also!!

Very good video, with nice steady camera work. Also, great safety tips. It was an especially good overview of the burner and pilot - to see where the flames should display. This is much better than the instructions that come with a water heater. Mine is slightly different, with an electric ignitor vs. the manual (my heater is a 12-year-old A.O. Smith Promax). does that round electrical part in the Thermocouple is an "Over Heat Switch" to turn off gas if it overheats. Can I replace it with just a regular thermocouple without the overheat switch

What if I just want to turn it up? Do I still need to do all of this? It’s on and works the gas technician decided he wanted to turn my water heater down without asking so my water doesn’t get hot anymore. It barely gets warm.

The gas company told me that the entire street will have gas turned off due to construction. Will I have to do this to get my hot water going again or is the pilot automatic? In 15 years of home ownership I've never had to deal with any pilots. Do most pilots come back on their own?

How come the dial doesn't have temperature marks on it? Say you wanted the hot water to come out at 110 F .... The A and B although indicate levels of warmth and hot... are not really temperatures ... Great video by the way. I can do this now !

the gas has to be on for it to light ....I was surprised how much easier it was ...and to think I came so close to having to pay Campbell and company or something $80 just to come out and "advise" and then probably another $60 to light the thing. I can't believe the water heater instructions say (use a strike match....even a kitchen match is an emergency room burn ward surgery situation waiting to happen! Safety lighter with as long of a tip as possible...for sure Is required...

I bought a brand new thermocouple, installed it, lit the pilot light waited five minutes, and released the valve only to have the pilot light go out on me numerous times. Why is this happening and how do I fix it so that the pilot light stays light. I have installed a dozen of these thermocouples, never had a problem until now. I kept this up for an hour and would not stay lit. Please respond. thanks.

So I have come back to these directions everytime the pilot light has gone out to refresh my paranoid mind of what I need to do to keep from blowing myself and family up. This last time ran into the issue of when letting go of the pilot ignition button the flame not remaining lit. With my mind scrabbling...what am I not doing right, missing, or how many attempts until KABOOM (too much MacGyver growing up)? Apparently I did not have the knob turned enough. Sitting on the pilot lighting dot was not enough, so I DARED!!!! go past it a bit more (arrow was about between the i and l of the printed wording) and it stayed lit. Hope this may help any other cautious water heater adventures and SuperDads.
