Totally. I’m doing this again for a tour coming up and I just find I have to listen, play, write out a chart/frame, and play more. It takes time, but it works.

You are absolutely right. In addition to writing out songs, I also practice with no bass with my notes (or no notes) with the song playing and call out the changes. It is almost as valuable as doing it with an instrument and it can be done anywhere you can wear headphones. I also learn the song basics first. The chords and the structure. As I get those down I go back and find runs, passing notes, etc and add those in. Every time I listen to the song, I hear more things. It is easier for me to absorb the song learning basics first and adding on as I get the parts down. Sometimes I get shows on short notice and I learn the basics of the song as far as I can without much fancy stuff and it works great. If I tried to do every single thing in those songs, it would sound terrible.

It sounds like you have a great process for learning songs in a way that works for you. Awesome! I hosted open jam nights for years, and being able to paraphrase and hear the changes because of song familiarity was the key to playing songs I really hadn’t played. It was an incredibly valuable skill. And yes, getting bogged down in the minutia would have me playing a torrent of bum notes…but I would get most of those by the end of the tune(had to toot my own horn! Lol!). Thanks for the comment.

Great video, Mike. I have been struggling with this as a casual player. I am amazed at my friends' abilities to know all the songs that they do. I have developed a habit of learning the parts of songs I want to learn, but my problem is I'm not listening and playing along with the songs enough. So what ends up happening is I play the song parts over and over but I play them in my own 'format' and I end up getting away from the feel of the songs and I don't know exactly when the chorus is supposed to start or the 3rd verse, etc. That's the obvious flaw in how I have approached things. Your advice on charting it out is exactly the right idea, and is something I am going to start doing. In addition to doing more playing along with and analyzing the songs I am trying to learn, charting it out and devoting the work to the process should make me a better player, and more importantly a better musician. Thanks for the good advice.

I like your use of the word “process”, because that’s exactly what it is. Not everyone has the same way of learning or creating a routine that works for them. That is also part of the process. Stay disciplined in your routine, and learn the WHOLE song. Map out the frame of the song(Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, etc.), and learn all the parts.

I like your tips, all straight up realistic ways to go about it! You are so right about reading the words onstage. I cant stand that, it is so lame for bands to do..I wont go pay to see a band do that. I saw many good bands, sure as hell never saw Led Zeppelin, Heart, Junior Brown, Michael Burkes, Kim Massie, the Stones, or so many other greats do that..only Chuck Berry forgot words, he was in his late 80's still played and moved real good, just forgot words, and the crowd and his son Charles, sang along with him, to make sure it all turned out well..He had no papers onstage, it just turned into a massive sing along.. but that is ok, because they jammed real good and he was like 87 or so..so hey...But you are right, of course having it totally memorized as if it is someones own song is way better, instead of papers, or smart phones, (even lamer), and music stand onstage.

ear training takes a long time to develop and repetition as well. I look for patterns since most metal and rock songs use the same chords and pentatonic scales just in different sequence.

Agreed. That's a different way of framing as I was saying. I do find it interesting to see people play a fairly common song and have completely different voicings or positions for chords than I would use. I have a joke with some of my friends and students where I say, "This chord is going to change your life!", and then I show them the voicing of a particular chord in the song they were playing and watch their face as they HEAR the right chord. Thanks for the video. I've been struggling with this cover I'm working on because I keep messing up in a few places with lyrics or chords or whatnot. It's frustrating! I will try writing everything down like you said and maybe it will stick better. I know I've had success with that in the past to help me remember something, but I don't think I've tried it with lyrics and music.

Don’t get down on yourself. Repetition is the key. Someone commented earlier on looking for patterns in the chords and song structures. I find that if I’m singing and playing, I have to learn one part really well first. I tend to learn the guitar part first, then write out the lyrics by listening to the song , NOT copying off google. The more I listen, the more everything sinks in. I also find that the map or structure of the song is easier to learn without a guitar in my hand, because if I have a guitar I will noodle away and not really pick up the parts. Stick with it. It’s not the years, it’s the hours.
