How to remove the blower fan assembly and motor from a SLK 200. The motor stopped working while driving in heavy rain. This was poor as I needed it to demist the windscreen! Apparently this seems to be a common problem. I made this video as I couldn't find any on KZbin. It is a fairly simple job to take the whole assembly out to clean, or even replace the motor, although slightly fiddly and does require some contortion to get under the glovebox!

Thanks once again for the really helpful video. I thought it worth mentioning that if your fan unit has water in it there must be a blockage in the air intake drain. If you lift the bonnet and look into the air intake you will see the drain hole (about 1.5 cm in diameter) in the front right hand corner. I used a heavy duty electric cable to poke through and ensure it was clear. I am sure a long stick would do just as well. RA

I have had issues because of the drain in the battery compartment getting plugged and water sloshes back into the fan intake.

I followed your clear instructions today and was then quickly able to remove, clean, and re-install my blower. Brilliant - thank you!!

Thanks for the video . It helped me remove the fan motor assembly on my wife's SLK350. I cleaned it and sanded the back of the blower wheel where it was hitting the housing. You video was a big help!

Great video- just finished doing it to my SLK which I thought might need a new heater motor and it worked a treat. Thanks very much saved me a fortune!

Hi Dave. I have just dropped my fan and removed a single large leaf, which was making it run noisily. Thanks for the video. By the way the panel is much easier to put back if you remove the power socket (which can be levered out) and put it back after reinstalling the panel. Obviously you have to pull the cable through the hole before putting the panel back in. RA

Thanks, this worked for my slk230. I was able to lube the bearing and clean the armature for a now working fan. Need a new switch at some point but it blows fast enough for now.

I've just done the same. My fan was squeaking so cleaned it out and lubricated the bearing. I also had the issue of it catching/rubbing when reassembled. I realised the rubber grommets need to to be seated past both rubber lugs, not between the two (you can see these at 5 minute mark). Once you've done this the housing can be tightly screwed into place.

Hi Craig, I'm really happy that my video has helped. I made the video because although there was some good advice on the SLK forums, at the time I couldn't find anything on youtube to help with what seems to be a fairly common problem, and one that can done yourself- if prepared to climb into the passenger footwell!

Thanks for this video, I will give it a go, I have a 2005 SLK350, I presume the assembly should be the same. The blower stopped working. Hope I can fix it and save a few hundred dollars. Had a couple of instances where the drain got clogged in a storm and water got into the car via the air/ac vents. fingers crossed.

Thanks for your explanation. It did help very much and with some help from W40 it works all fine again. With a screwdriver + W40 you can release the rubber lugs easily.

BEST VIDEO EVER to remove blower fan assembly (and I have a 350, same parts)! You even show how to get the stinking connectors apart, which when you're contorted into position under the dash seems impossible. Suggestions to others who remove the housing: 1- Have a pan under the motor; I had about two cups of water in the housing when it dropped which is now under the carpet; and 2- I drilled two 1/8 inch holes in the housing, one under the fan motor itself and one under the control unit, as "weep" holes so that (hopefully) the water will never accumulate in the housing again. I'd rather sacrifice the carpet than the motor.

Thank you so much for your comments on my video, it means a lot. The reason I made it was because there just wasn't anything to help on youtube when we had this problem so I hope it has helped other people. I couldn't believe how rusty the motor was when I took it apart and what a bad design it is. Your suggestion of drilling a couple of holes to stop water accumulating sounds good to me. Cheers, all the best

Thanks a lot - my fan was making a load of clicking and squeaking noises. Followed your steps, found some leaves and other crap in there. Quick squirt of WD40 and it's now completely silent. Cheers!

I have exactly the same problem. Every couple of months or so, I remove the leaves from the fan by gaining access via the battery compartment. This time, the fan has stopped working so I will go through the same steps as you. I've changed the pollen filter several times so don't expect there to be any unusual problems unless the fan motor is shot. The design of this system is a disgrace. I hope Mercedes read this and respond, they should re-design it and have a recall. However, we all know that they won't do that. They would rather charge an arm and a leg to repair it. Excellent video! Have you considered fitting a screen between the battery compartment and the fan to reduce the amount of leaves getting to the fan? A drain from the fan and pollen filter might help, but the real solution is to stop the leaves and water getting into the system. I haven't started my rant about rattles and leaks, but that's another subject.

Hi, thanks for your comments. Yes I agree, the design is really poor. Fortunately getting the fan out yourself and looking at it shouldn't be beyond most people- that's why I made the video to start with, as there wasn't anything on KZbin- and I didn't want to pay Mercedes hundreds of pounds for something I could do myself :-) Thanks also for your later comment too- which seems to be blocked, and I can't figure out why KZbin has done it or how to unblock it- but am working on it!

Anyone done this for a R172 2012 model? Doesn’t seem as straight forward. I removed the screws and slid the clips but it didn’t drop like in this video. 🙈

Hello😊 please can you tell me how you cleaned everything up to make it work again, as I've managed to remove it all from the car but have no idea how you cleaned it and what with. I'm just a trying to fix it like you have, your instructions were brilliant at getting it out, now I just want to clean it up and do a bodge as you call it like you have. 😊

Thank you for this video! My blower just up and quit the other day after working fine. Found this and it sure made the job of removing it easy. Mine was clean in there, no obvious problems, blower spins easily and worked fine when connected to a battery directly. Reading the Regulator / Resistor is a common problem. Hoping so just ordered an OEM Behr to replace it. Not sure what I will do if this does not get it working again?

Hi Brad, thanks for your comment. Sorry not replied earlier as I don't always seem to get notified when someones left a comment. I read that the regulator can definitely be an issue too and this does sound like the cause of the problem. Hope that you got it fixed :-)

Just a warning thou, it is hard to push it all the way back it. But in my case, it was making a grinding sound so that extra little space stop the noise.
