How to Remove a 2018 Ford Explorer Headliner - The Easy Way

I'm fixing hail damage on this 2018 Ford Explorer and wanted to document how to remove the headliner. We are dropping the headliner to gain access to the metal so we can fix the hail dents on the roof. Hopefully you find it helpful. All the tools I use are listed below. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this video! I got a 2019 ford flex SEL with the Vista Roof and wanted to add some Sound Deadener to the sheet metal on the ceiling of the flex to reduce some noise I started to hear from the back. This is the closest video I could find. 😁🙏

Thanks, very helpful. Not too many good videos cover the removal of the headliner for these model year Explorers. I just need to drop it down a bit to run a cable for a rear dashcam...and to solve a rattle that's above me in the headliner.

My headliner has a rattle just above the driver seat, and the dealer is giving me trouble getting an estimate of what it would cost to get it to stop rattling. This video gives me great confidence to lower it enough to figure out what is rattling, and remove/fix it myself.

I know this video was quite a long time ago but I have a question for you if your still remeber. When your took the headliner down was there an extra plug near the front of the headliner by chance? I am wondering if Ford left a plug near the front for the auto dimmin mirror. I see this car has the manual one so just curious if Ford has the wiring right there for it or not.

Well done video. Can you show how to properly lower the rear headliner just enough to get at the underside of the shark fin?

Should be able to remove just the back half of the headliner and get access to the fin. Pull the rear panels and remove the clips in the head liner. You will probably have to use a interior tool like the one I'm using in the video to work the headliner out of the pillars on the left and right side of the vehicle in the rear. once you do that it should droop a little. Just be careful not to put too much pressure on it because if you wrinkle bend it too much it will wrinkle. Headliners in Fords are very durable and will return to normal shape after sitting for a few hours.

Hey man, nice video. I just bought a 2018 Explorer Sport today. Loving it but I didn't realize there were pretty long scratches in the headliner cloth. How do I repair them? Or do I have to get the whole cloth replaced? I appreciate the knowledge you spread!

Thanks for the feedback! Happy to hear you got yourself a new ride. Depending on the severity of the scratches in the headliner, there are spray on fillers that attach with adhesives. Interior guys use it to repair cigarette burns on seats and I imagine you can do the same on a headliner. If they are severe the headliner has to be pulled and recovered. Good luck!

Do you have to remove the rear trunk door to take out the headliner?

No, you can get it down without removing the hatch. We took the hatch off because it was necessary for our repair.

It takes me approximately 20 minutes to get the headliner down. It might take longer if you take down all the trim and pillars. I skip all that though.
