Off roaders use them frequently. Just be careful when you're lowering something, that handle is under pressure until the bolt catches in the next hole. People have been seriously hurt by a handle whacking them in the face/head

Well I am somewhat new to this channel and I was brought here because of the ticking stick from 6 years ago video. Have to say Leah is a bad ass with all her tips and tricks. Of course I had no clue about a ticking stick or this farm jack and I'm sure we all have our own tricks of doing certain projects to make them easier and or faster. Of course now days every one wants quick and easy and most people would of either dug the post out or hooked a chain to the post and then to some kind of vehicle then rip it out. But Leah is doing things safe and smart and that's what matters most. So props to you Madame. Love this channel and love learning new ways of doing different things.

I’ve used this trick several times. Also works without the chain by just screwing or nailing a wood block directly to the post and jacking up on the block.
@declanfarber22 күн бұрын
@@patbullard9276 Or just drill a hole through the post (that you’re probably not going to reuse) and run the chain through the hole. Easier, arguably more secure, and you don’t waste your hard-earned money on a nail.

Nice! I once had to pull up a fence stump that was a little below ground level. Like you, I used a power drill and screws to attach a chain to the stump. A farm jack might well have worked, but I instead did a lever / fulcrum thing to pull it up.

If farm jacks/Hi-Lifts are something people haven't used before, those people NEED to watch a "how to properly use" video. I've been a 4-wheeler for decades and these Jack's are very common. But as common as they are, very few people know how to use them properly. This is why us 4x4'ers call these jacks "widow makers", "jaw busters", "teeth removers" and other assorted names of pain. When the switch is flipped to lower the jack, the handle is under pressure and can/will cause severe injury if a person doesn't know what they're doing and/or standing in the wrong place.

I borrowed my dad’s old farm jack to remove a 6x6 post that’s set in concrete, but son needed it back before I got around to using it. I’ll re-borrow it and try to get it done. When finished I plan to fully restore the jack like new. I’ve already gotten new decals from the manufacturer. Dad would have been proud.
@transmundanium23 күн бұрын
That's exactly what I use to pull out posts, even the concrete footings for the heavy duty installations. But you have to have something to brace the top of the jack so it doesn't tip forward. a length of 2x4 usually does the job nicely.

@TheFiberFrontier23 күн бұрын
I've done this many times on t-posts, but I bought a t-posts remover and prefer it. Unless the t-post has been in the ground so long that it's stuck really good, usually due to being in the ground for years and years. Then the hi-lift jack works better.

If you don't have those large screws, simply wrap the chain around the post TWICE so it grips it when jacking without sliding. No need for the screws at all.

Once I used a farm jack (Hi-lift) to lift the stump of a cherry tree next to a retaining wall of concrete block some 5 feet high. Everything was going fine and the neighbour was amazed at the tool. Until we both noticed we had started to the wall........... It is worth purchasing D or bow links that fit the eye's in the shaft and hole in the tow so you can do other fun winching and pulling tasks.

I'm thinking it would work. I bought an Irwin quick lift construction jack to raise my small shed on order to level it. 10" of lift, 330lb capacity. The farm jack might be better if the shed is very heavy or you need to lift it up by a lot.

@j.robertsergertson451323 күн бұрын
Nice 👍 a lot better than ripping it out with a pick up truck
@elhoward74403 күн бұрын
The problem with tying a chain to the truck and hitting the gas to pull out a post or a stump is that when the obstacle comes loose, it's likely to fly through the air... into the back of your truck! (We've all seen those videos... hilarious, but painful when you think about the costs.)
@vanceflight343323 күн бұрын
Will that work if the post is set in concrete?
@declanfarber23 күн бұрын
If the post is set in concrete it helps to elevate the base of the farm jack with some spacers (cutoffs of a 2x6 and with a 2x6 elevated platform?) until you’ve got the thing loose and you feel confident that you can pull it loose. As always with this method of pulling posts, stay clear of the rotational arc of the farm jack handle!! If something breaks loose unexpectedly, the handle could perhaps fatally injure you.

I’m old enough to remember when shorter versions of this were called bumper jacks. Cars had bumpers attached to the car’s chassis and were strong enough to support the weight of a car. How about a short video on how to install a new screw-type fence post support?
@elhoward74403 күн бұрын
They have custom-made bases for farm jacks you can use instead of plywood. Probably worth the cost, if you can find one. Don't know why Leah didn't just close the loop with the screw instead of needing a quick link (which looks a lot like a carabiner to me.)
@cmiller729923 күн бұрын
Tried this with fence 4x4's in concrete...posts popped clean off leaving all the concrete in ground 😅 Their base at ground level had rotted a bit too much.
