Our tools need to be repaired and maintained. I'll show you how to remove the lawnmower blade in this video.
Power tools can be dangerous if you do not have the proper training or experience to operate or repair them. I have no way of knowing your skill level and will not take any responsibility for your safety. Be careful and find a local expert if you need help.
As always, thanks for watching!

I was taught many many years ago, The way of gripping a pair of mole grips on the side of the mower, which also stops the blade turning, without any bits of wood slipping, risking injury, looking a prat making a video without rehearsing or editing! You got there in the end! Good job!!

A block of wood and a blade that is hard to remove can lead to a bent blade. If you are removing the blade and replacing it with a new one then no problem. If you are just removing the blade to sharpen it, I would not recommend this. You can bend the blade and then you can have a real problem. Also, always balance the blade before installing.

That's not the safe / correct way to change the blade. Un safe technique. Stick a longer 2x4 through where grass exits mower. It will safely lock the blade. I hope that will keep you safe from harming yourself.

Another method to unstick the bolt is to heat it with a bernzomatic torch like you would use to solder copper pipes. Of course you have to be careful not set the old grass stuff under the mower on fire. Also, make sure you don't have any gas spillage around before you start. Fire extinguisher is also good to have close. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Always best to drain the oil first and change it at the same time. Otherwise when the mower is tipped over it drains into the carb assembly and foam air filter..the mower then smokes like buggery for weeks.

Love the video. I've never done this before and need to know what tool you used to loosen the bolt holding the blade. What is it called?
@SyberPrepper
@SyberPrepper 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathleen, I used a thing called a ratchet and a socket. The ratchet is nice because it has a switch allowing you to lock it into one direction or another. However, you could also use a breaker bar and a socket. So, ratchet or breaker bar. Either one will work. Don't forget to disconnect that spark plug wire before you start working on the blade. Thanks for watching.

I watched a number of videos. One mentioned different types of mowers that should or should not be tipped certain ways. Mine is a Craftsman, but there are two models. If tipped the wrong way, one could ruin the airfilter the other the carburetor. One showed a better way to secure the blade by using a vice grips. One recommended using the old oil to paint the underside and avoid rust. Lots of good tips like this video offered. Check out all videos to be sure you don't do something wrong.

I tried to unscrew the bolt of the blade of a 20 year old lawn mower,a rusty bolt is very hard to loosen. I had to heat the shaft with a disposable blow torch where the bolt screwed in. Heat the shaft for a minute to get the metal expand. (Don't blowtorch the the bolt head) while the shaft still hot,try to unscrew the bolt with care and wear a pair of industrial leather gloves..a socket wrench is an ideal. A spanner would slip, and hurt your knuckles..

an easier way is to grab the end of the blade with your left hand and pull towards you while pushing away with the wrench. a breaker bar requires far less effort to turn as well.are you going to put an edge on it or buy a new one?

Never replaced my blade before. Thanks for the video. I have a question about gas and oil. Do i need to empty it before turning the mower on it's side?
@SyberPrepper
@SyberPrepper 9 жыл бұрын
DuctTapeSusie Hi. Short answer. If you have gas in the gas tank, it is better to empty that into a container before removing the blade. Long answer. Typically, when I remove the blade to sharpen, it is a good time to change the oil as well. (Don't forget to remove the spark plug wire for safety.) So, drain gas, drain oil, change/sharpen blade. A good time to do this is after you cut the grass since the gas tank should be mostly empty. Great question.

Instead, consider using a set of vise grips. Tightly "fasten" them on the frame of the mower after setting them in a place where the grips will stop the rotation of the blade. Using this method will eliminate the likelihood of bending the blade by using a piece of misplaced wood. In any case, wear gloves to protect yourself.

Sounds like rust may be holding it? Try vibrating it with an impact driver in different places. Or, if you have a hammer drill, put the head of the hammer drill (without the drill of course) and put it on different place around where you are trying to break it loose. Tapping with a hammer could work. Lastly, you could heat it with a small torch like you use when soldering pipes together. Careful. Do any heating outside and where no gas has leaked. Good luck.

Grab a piece of wood, doesn't have to be real thick but about the width of the deck. Prop it in there and begin to twist (unloosen) blade. The wood might want to rotate but at some point, it will catch on something on the deck, stay rigid in place and the bolt will loosen.Thanks for the idea.

goldwingman1500, Good suggestion on the MultiGrips or ViceGrips. I've not worked on Honda mowers, but I would guess removing the bolt from the crankshaft would go opposite of normal, so you would have to turn clockwise. Also, check out the JEREMY FOUNTAIN channel on KZbin. He works on a lot of Honda's.

That's a pain for sure. I've had good luck with a product called Liquid Wrench by Gunk. If that doesn't work you can try using a torch (like the one you use for plumbing pipes) and applying it to the nut. The heat will make the nut expand and it should come loose. Of course, do this outside and get anything flammable out of the area (including dry grass on the bottom of the mower). It is way too easy to catch stuff on fire so have a fire extinguisher handy. Good luck.

I would have liked to know about the gas and oil. Won't these spill when you tip the mower? If so how do I empty them so I can tip the machine and not have them spill?
@SyberPrepper
@SyberPrepper 8 жыл бұрын
It is best to work on the mower after you have cut the grass and the gas tank is mostly empty. (Always disconnect the spark plug before working on the mower.) Then you won't have much trouble with gas spillage. Another thing you could try is to take off the gas cap, cover the opening with saran wrap and screw the gas cap back on. This should reduce gas spillage when you tip the mower up. Of course, don't forget to take the saran wrap off before you run the mower. I don't have trouble with the oil spilling out when the mower is tilted up. However, once you complete your work on the mower, and all 4 wheels are on the ground, let it sit for a few minutes and check the oil dipstick. If oil is needed you can add it then.
