It's amazing the number of YT videos on how to remove the blades but fail to adequately explain the simple method to loosen turn towards the cutting edge. Thank you!

Should have tuned the blade a bit to to show which direction you meant instead bolt turns this way to and that way to non cutting side etc. That was the only thing that confused me a bit on your explanation, thanks for the video.

What would be the issue if I am reinstalling the blade bolt but it won't go back in all the way? I can get it about 1 full turn then it seizes up, and the adapter/crankshaft begin spinning, not allowing it to actually tighten. Getting off was a breeze, but can't find much about getting it back on in this case. Threads on the bolt look fine, minor rust. Threads that the bolt is going into look clean and not bare or messed up. Thoughts?
@GuysPlayingWithToolsАй бұрын
If it's only going on 1 turn and sticking, that usually means it's trying to cross thread. Try it without the blade so you can see the alignment a little more easily. If the bolt looks good, you might be OK. The crank is hardened steel and won't strip easily, but if it is, you can use a tap to clean the threads up pretty easily. 👍

@@GuysPlayingWithTools Thanks I'll give that another try.

@fizeekpoaster The distraction of keeping the blade in place can fool the best of them. With a little luck that's all it is.
@fizeekpoasterАй бұрын
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Haha, true. I hadn't seen anyone mention what happens if the blade doesn't even spin but instead the adapter/crankshaft spins. I think you're right about the threads getting stuck.

Doesn't the motor turn to the cutting side? Then if the bolt gets loose towards the cutting side, wouldn't the motor turning loosen the bolt?
@GuysPlayingWithToolsАй бұрын
@YoNevNo Seems odd, but it's true. I think the same thing every time I put a blade on or attach a clutch to a go kart.

knobs act as spear pins also...if blade hits a pipe or similar the knobs will shear off and blade spins free protecting engine shaft from breaking.
@GuysPlayingWithTools Жыл бұрын
I have seen that happen too. I wouldn't think it would work, but every and then, I get one with the pins sheared and a torn up blade.... and a perfectly good crank. .

Hi! I have a question. I ran into something hard with my lawnmower and I thought the blade was busted. When I turned it and checked, noticed that square at the end of the shaft and the blade was no longer on the pins, and the pins are busted, they no longer hold the blade. I tried to remove the blade to see if that square can be replaced, but i cannot remove it, it turns over the square regardless how hard I tried to clamp them together. Is there a trick on how to take the blade off, other than clamping tools? Thank you so much!!
@NicoletaWestren-jk2kg6 ай бұрын
Actually it is not the blade turning Sorry. I stopped the blade with a clamp. The square is turning when I try to take the bolt out

Good Morning. I have to say, I thought "Yikers" when I read this, but all is not lost(probably) This will be wordy but I want to go over everything as much as possible and tell you what I wish people told me when I was getting started. There is a chance you bent the crankshaft, and if that's the case, I don't recommend trying to straighten it out because the internals of the motor may have also had a bad afternoon. Rotate the blade and look for any indication it's out of alignment on the center bolt, if it seems to be rotating on the center axis, it's saveable! In that case this isn't as hard to fix as you may think. There is a blade adapter between the blade and the crankshaft and that's the part with the pins that you bolt the blade to. Take the center bolt out and it should come off pretty easily, it might need a puller since it took a hit, most auto stores will loan you one for free. You can get a replacement blade adapter online or at your local parts store pretty cheap, They are usually between $15 and $20. With the right tools and a little luck it's a 5 minute job. *Be careful about which way the nut turns!* It might be "left handed" I have a video on how to figure it out easily, kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4abaGljl8yEftE Let me know if you need anything else, and how it comes out!
@NicoletaWestren-jk2kg6 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for your reply. I also thought shaft might be bent. The bolt moves with the square, and one of the pins is more worn than the other, which tells me shaft might have a bit of a bent. I left it with a wd40 soak and will try again to clamp the square to the blade and try one more time to take the bolt out. If not, I will put it in the car and take it in. Also might have to check on warranty as it’s got 4 years. Keep my fingers crossed, bought it because it has a Briggs and Stratton engine ☹️ Will let you the outcome. Thanks a lot!

@@NicoletaWestren-jk2kg Don't worry too much about the uneven pin wear, it's odd but not terribly unusual. If you don't have one, beg, borrow, buy or steal a battery impact gun. I bought mine specifically because I had a blade that I couldn't get off and I was tired of dragging out air hoses to use the big impact. It has never failed to take blades off with nearly no effort, you usually don't even have to hold the blade. The day you try it I will get a comment about how easy it was. 😀 If you can't borrow one, consider that the cost to take it into a shop will subsidize a new one. FYI, the one you see me using in the videos is a 3/8 Milwaukee M12 impact and it works like a charm. It's more work to walk over to the mower than it is to take the blade off. (Make sure you are trying to turn it the right direction, it's not obvious.)
@NicoletaWestren-jk2kg6 ай бұрын
That bolt is not coming out whatever I tried, used 4 clamps. Two on the square and blade and two on the edge or the mower to keep the blade. Shaft is for sure bent. Lucky me I have a tractor mower and this one is for small areas. Will take it in, not sure the warranty will cover. Thanks again!

If the blade adapter pins are missing or worn all the way down, you should replace it. There are a few different styles, so make sure you match yours.

My bolts not moving.. any tips?
@GuysPlayingWithTools2 ай бұрын
Sure, I need to start with questions though, Are you moving towards the cutting edge of the blade, and what tool are you using? any tool with the word impact in it will make it a lot easier 🙂
@alandrummond5890 We better hurry then before he sees it's sorta missing. Lol 1. Make sure you are turning towards the sharp side of the blade. The blade could be backwards, so it's also like holding the bolt still while the motor is running. 2. If it's not stripped, make sure the impact is turned all the way up. Mine won't pull a tough one unless it's set to "kill" 3. If it is, and it's not stripped, you need more power. Take it to your favorite parts store, they will usually lend you a bigger impact or even walk outside and do it for you. 4. If it's stripped, there are a few ways to go. My preferred way is to grind the head off, and if there is anything to grab, it will usually be finger tight. If not, drill a hole in the center of the bolt and use a reverse twist bolt removal tool and it will hop out pretty easy. The auto parts stores are usually good about loaning out this kinda tool, O'Reillys has always been good about it for me.

Looks like that blade was put on wrong. You fix the bolts lining up but there was no washers like there is on my Craftsman mower there on other Craftsman mowers there is a plate that comes off with it has another lock in washer and my bolt was too long. Wouldn't go in seem like threads were getting caught almost stripped out I got a new bolt n blade I can't find a video of the actual mower or what size of socket people were talking about 3/8 to 1/2 in
@GuysPlayingWithTools6 ай бұрын
They are definitely different from one to the next, this is correct for this one but you are 101% right, some have additional washers and the bolt won't tighten without them. One of the downsides of making videos about things like this is that I can't cover every situation out there. What's the model # on yours? I will keep my eyes open and if I have one(or when I get one) I will touch on the differences in a video.

I retired that air ratchet in favor of a battery impact gun a year or so ago. If you have someone that can lend you a battery impact(3/8 works great), it will spin right off. If not, take it to O'Reillys or Autozone and they will happily loosen it for you for free 👍

Do you mean the little pins that stick out of the part you bolt the blade to(the blade adapter)? If so, it's also replaceable, and they are usually pretty cheap.

@GuysPlayingWithTools3 ай бұрын
While an impact wrench isn't as accurate as a torque wrench, it's the tool everybody uses for blades, but nobody admits it. If you were to finger tighten a single bolt blade, the rotation of the mower would immediately tighten it. I wouldn't trust it that way though. 👍

That's a good question. I used a 3/8 impact air tool in this video, but that was a while ago. Battery impact guns have improved greatly since then, and I use a Milwaukee 3/8 impact gun for the same job now. You could use a standard socket set, but it's a LOT easier and faster with your favorite impact tool.
