This is a 4th generation dry cleaner's guide to removing a bike grease or motor oil stain
A bike grease or motor oil stain is known as a combination stain, it's two components are a particulate stain that requires a high ph solution to break up the metallic bonds between the soil and clothing and a grease stain that requires a surfactant. There are 4 main types of stains: greasy, oxidizable, particulate, and enzymatic. In general, motor oil / bike grease are moderate to difficult to remove.
1) Rinse and brush any physical bits of the stain away with cool or warm water.
2) Treat the stain with laundry detergent or dish soap, work it in, and wait at least 15 minutes before washing.
3) Add 1/4-1/8 a cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), washing soda (sodium carbonate) and/or borax (sodium borate) to your washer drum and add your items.
3) Wash as recommended by the care label.
4) Inspect the stain, if it still remains repeat steps above. It may take a few more tries depending on the severity.
5) Dry as recommended by the care label.
The sooner you get to the stain the easier it will be to remove.
