Yo brother, I just wanted to let you know. I was at the end of my rope with my drain plug. I tried everything and couldn't get it to budge. I finally dug deep in my research and found your simple video. Went to the auto store and got the bolt extractor, 5 minutes in with a breaker bar and got it loose. Changed the oil and now I'm a happy man. Thanks for showing me how to save it

Hey, I bought a set of these from Amazon--only needed the 17mm but whatever. I had to get that drain plug out! It worked like a charm. Thanks, Arty.

I can confirm, vice grip will strip it worse. Now onto harbor freight for extractor socket.

What do you do if the oil drain plug is really close to the transmission pan and there is not enough clearance to do what you are suggesting?

I’m not a mechanic but I would imagine what kind of contraption would be required to move it and then see if that exists lol

Yeah no, it just keeps rounding further.
@Babydudetatts2 жыл бұрын
Guess you’d just replace it after getting it off
@bakonfreek2 жыл бұрын
Provided it comes off. I ended up just using a dremel to grind some flats I could put a wrench on with mine (fortunately, the screw-or bolt with no mating nut-was made of cheese grade metal so I ended up grinding some flats I could get a wrench on pretty easy and it didn't chew the threads in the oil pan). Lesson learned, avoid the oil change house that got a new rattle gun to play with. That car has since been scrapped (flood damage), but.. yeah.

They come in different sizes, maybe it wasn’t small enough to catch a grip
@bakonfreek Жыл бұрын
Nah, it caught, but the drain bolt on newer Dodge cars (not sure if this is true with other cars) is made of chrome plated hard cheese instead of metal so you can round the thing fairly easily with a farmer wrench. These will just make them even rounder.

Yeah this sucks someone put this in wayyyyy too tight, I have a extractor that drills into the bolt but would rather make some flats somehow and try again

Public announcement: if the bolt that is rounded off is say a 16mm USE A SMALLER one of those extractor sockets and hammer it on DO NOT use is 16mm extractor socket on a 16mm rounded bolt use a 15mm extractor socket and hammer it on there till it’s on all the way or 3 quarters way on it was save u from pulling the hair off of ur head

Harbor freight does not have twist socket. The bold extractor socket Harbor Freight sells are not twist sockets and will only round off your bolt head if you apply more than 40lbs of pressure.

Going through that problem I just went grabbed them at harbor freight

Didn't work for me. Vice grips actually did the trick, but had to put them around the lip of the entire bolt!

@@artysgarage6907 oh I got charged two weeks ago. I used something like that but shorter and some tool like a mini breaker bar. That was the first oil change since I got it. 😡 Screw power tools.
