Thanks! Wow, that Tire was stuck on! I used two woodworking clamps just like you used your vice, and just steadily slowly levered the clamps to pull the tire bead off the rim. As someone else said, look into the gap between the room and the tire bead, and keep the torque on the to keep that gap slowly widening! I used some rubbing alcohol even though my tires were not tubeless - I'm not sure it helped but it felt like I was doing something! Thanks again.

A real life saver! A splash or two of isopropyl, then standing with one foot on a Park Tool PW-3 on the tire bead on one side, and one foot on the other side of the rim for leverage, and voila: problem solved! Thank you.

Thanks for the tips. My tyre seemed to be superglued to the rim. It was impossible to get a lever between the tyre and rim. I actually cut the tyre with a carving knife and was able to get one side off. I squirted a solution of cider vinegar, water and washing up liquid on the tape. Iet it soak in and went back 30 minutes later to find the tyre had completely come free from the rim tape. Saved an embarrassing trip to the bike shop!

I just spent 2 1/2 hours trying to get a tire off my rim. Never did get it. I was just trying to break the bead to throw a little pepper in there to stop a pinhole leak right at the rim's edge. The tire is a Maxxis Minion 2.8 tubeless with Cush Core inserts. I knew it was going to be a pain, but I didn't think it was going to be this stubborn. I tried: wheel levers, soapy water, 3 heavy duty C clamps, alcohol, and I was eyeballing my vice...I gave up pumped her up, and it held. So, here I am. Searching KZbin for a simple diy tire bead breaker. Watched a few tutorials that were dealing with simple regular tires with inner tubes. Grrrrr. Then I see yours, and wonder if I should invest my time on a 14 minute video. Well, I'm glad I did. Next time I'm going straight to my vice. AND getting some Red Rubber Grease! Thanks for the video👍🏼. Much appreciated. Oh by the way, I subscribed.

Brilliant video Dave and I followed your advice last week and red rubber greased my rear wheel rim. Guess what? I had my first rear wheel puncture for 3 years last Saturday afternoon after a shard of glass penetrated the tread. I tipped the bike upside down, got the tyre off with my bare hands, took the glass out and popped in a spare tube. I did have to use cable ties and a small plastic lever to get it on, which wasn't a big problem. However I did have another issue as I had only got a 20g CO2 cartridge which I'd never tried on a 29 x 2.5 tyre. I guess I managed to get around 8 PSI in it and had a very wobbly ride home, about 4 miles. Thanks for the brilliant tip. 5*

Very helpful video. I had to cut my rear tyre off to remove it previously. The front tyre has a puncture now. No way is that bead going to be broken and I don’t have a vice. Instead of cutting the tyre off and potentially damaging the tube and rim, I’ll take it in to a cycle shop for repairs and get them to use rubber grease.

@corydalus981

This has been happening to me for the last couple of years, and my usual bike shop has had the same problem. It's like the tire has been glued onto the rim. I ruined two tires removing them, and barely managed to save a couple more. I dread this happening out on a long ride if I get a flat. I suspect that when bicycling became extremely popular after COVID lockdowns began, tire makers started churning out tires at a great rate, and maybe were not so fussy about the rubber being completely cured. It seemed to happen most with the lower-end tires that come on new bikes. When pressed against the rim by air pressure, they then sort of did glue themselves on. The red rubber grease is a GREAT idea.

Great video mate! After fighting with a tyre for hours I only had 1 bead off, the other side would not budge and I was about to lose my mind. I don't have a vice but instead I used some WD-40 on the bead, left it for 20 minutes returned and the bead snapped off in seconds using my hands. I took the brake disc off before using the WD-40 just in case then cleaned the rim off with alcohol afterwards. This was the first time changing tyres on this bike and the LBS that built it up had used something akin to gorilla tape. I'll be taking that all off and using some proper rim tape instead. Thanks again.

A bit of alcohol did the trick, finally, not easily. Helpful note: In my case, when the bead finally broke away from the tire it was not a sudden thing but more like a slow motion movie and knowing this is important because you might actually be breaking the seal and not know it and give up a moment too soon. Don't go just by feel, feeling for the break, but also use your eyesight to see if bead might be beginning to break even though you can't feel it breaking yet.

Thanks for the video. 2 questions: 1. Is this safe on carbon wheels? I have a set of hooked rims paired with GP5000s and it's always a pain to remove the tires when I replaced the tubes. 2. Can I use any rubber grease? There's no red rubber grease from where I live and the silverhook ones are quite expensive online. Thanks again!
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, You can use this method on carbon with additional care but on road wheels you might find that it's not effective as the width is not there to dislodge the tyre. As long as its rubber grease it will be fine, however, a word of warning, as you know road wheels run at much higher pressures. All carbon rims, road or mountain can be difficult to get on and remove tyres.

Hi Dave, I want to change my inner tube on my mountain bike tyre. The inner tube sealant has seeped around inside as expected to seal a leak … but when trying to let the air out of the valve nothing happens. it’s probably sealed around the valve. So it’s too low pressure for a good ride, but tyre is too inflated for me to use my tyre levers to release the tyre. Any ideas? I’ve tried a solvent spray into valve but no luck.
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching and your comments, if you can remove the valve core then use a hairclip or cocktail stick to clear the valve inside, if this fails cut the valve stem off and push it back through the rim

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Thanks Dave, will give it a try. I might then try squeezing tyre in vice similar to what you did, and it might pop.

Hot air gun or even an air drier works well for softening the bond, just have to build up the heat slowly over about a 1/4 of the circumfrence and not get giddy and overheat the rim. Ive had stuck fast tyres on carbon and ali wheels and used heat for both without damaging tyre or rim Downside of using heat is it can also loosen the rim tape adhesive. That said I use a hot air gun to remove rim tape, use a bit of heat and the tape will come off in one strip without tearing every few inches and leaving bits of stubborn tape stuck here and there.

This exact thing happened to me couple of years ago. Could not get damn tire off had to cut perfectly good tire. And yes I did use gorilla tape and that’s why I never use gorilla tape anymore as rim tape. Can you imagine trying to put a tube in trail side 🤬. And yes I almost threw wheel out the window.😂 oh and I tried the vice trick and did not work but I was not smart enough to also use brake cleaner or some sort of Lube. Great video 👍

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic fortunately I should never have this problem as I use Tannus Armour inserts. So far so good. I never like the idea of making a rim full of holes airtight with tape and sealing fluid. Seems a bit heath robinson, though it does seem to work and impress those who have it.

1 year on, just tried to take the tyre off again - and it was stuck this time too! My liquid solution didn't help this time, nor did standing on the rim or using bits of wood. I hammered a small screw drive edge into the rim, which broke the seal and the tyre came off fairly easily. I've just ordered some red rubber grease - so I hope it won't happen again.
