I am indebted to you. This instruction video of your's was perfect. My door was sometimes really difficult to open because the wire that the little clip that goes into the door handle to release the door, has been stretched through use, so I moved clip on the end, out a couple of notches on the door handle, and now it is working perfectly. I could never have got access to it without your instructions. If you ever find yourself in county Tyrone Northern Ireland, I'll be glad to buy you a pint. Thanks man.

Top tip, the release mechanism can become seized. Mine had and wouldn’t release. A couple of firm taps with a soft-headed mallet directly on the lock (or blank in my case as it was a rear handle) freed the rotating steel section allowing it to release the lock/blank.

Now I probably need to take the whole door apart to get the dropped part back. Then I need to find a lock cylinder repair kit. You did a great job. I didn't.

Like you, my lock would not remain within the unit. So I removed the door panel, window and the door lock actuator. Then I could remove the door handle backing plate from within the cavity of the door. The problem is the locking ring which rotates as you adjust the T20 screw. You caused the locking ring to fall out of the backing plate. You need to remove the backing plate and either replace the unit or refit the locking ring. NOT really difficult but requires multiple hours.

Great video, you can definitely screw things up if you fail to hold the door handle open whilst unscrewing. But I would caution against the 12 turns - not all the mechanisms are identical. Some are metal and some are plastic and they have slightly different spring setups. In my experience EIGHT turns is the one to stop on. If it still doesn't release, try nine then ten.

@MikeSmith-tq5gq4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the T20 somehow releases the lock, and you can pull it out. My difficulty, like others here, is securing the lock back in, because after putting it back in and tightening the T20, it comes out again, the handle doesn't return to the fully closed position and the cable slips out of the adjustment channel.

Working on a my Golf mk5 front passenger door. T20 bolt is loose and cable is out. The keyhole nub piece is out too. But just cannot remove handle. I have tried sliding and pushing both ways. Any more force would break something so i have left it. I have found that even after retightening the the T20 bolt, the nub piece can still come out if i pull on it. The handle itself is the only thing preventing it falling out. So something is clearly not right but i followed the instructions in the video exactly. It looks so easy in the video but my handle will not come out.

You should not blindly follow this guide in its entirety. I did 12 turns on my VW Touran and everything fell apart inside the door. Very tricky to re-assembly. I tested after following the official written instructions, which say to to only loosen until the locking cylinder is loose. Which turns out to be only about 4-5 turns in my case. So my advise is, hold the handle open, ½ turn at a time and check if it comes out. This way you for sure wont loosen it to much.

I did exactly how you said but it will not move at all. 12 times and holing the door handle open at the same time. So to me it doesn't matter if the screw is there or not. The lock will simply not move. The only solution as I see it is to get a new door and change everything
@HumbleMechanic6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on why the door is having an issue. Someone could have messed it up before.
@jwester70096 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your answer. The only issue I'm having is rust. So I'm trying to separate the outer door skin from the door itself. Maybe I messed it up myself. The first time I screwed about 12 times but did not hold the door handle open. The lock moved a bit but didn't come loose. Since I couldn't get the lock to come loose I tried screwing it all the way out (It's possible because my screwdriver is magnetic and can hold the screw). Now it seems the lock has decided it doesn't want to move at all
@jwester70096 жыл бұрын
BTW I figured it out. If you end up screwing it too many turns like might have done, then you end up bending a part of the mechanism that releases the door lock. The mechanism works like a big round disc with some tabs that prevents the door lock from coming out. So to release the door lock this disc actually needs to be turned. That's where little screw does its job. It pushes to a part of the disc and makes the disc turn. But if you screw more than 12 turns that part bends and the screw no longer pushes anything. I wonder how VW came up with such a weird system

i unscrewed it too much on my mk4 golf and the rotating piece inside got into a "softlock" state where no matter how much you loosened or tightened he screw it wouldnt release the lock cylinder... so you need to remive the inner door panel and then you can reach in with a long fkathead scredriver, with the T20 loosened all the way without it falling off, pry the "ring" back into place so that when the screw is tightened it goes back into its slot and then never loosen it too much evrr again :D

What happens if you go beyond the 12 turns and remove that release screw? Mine is stripped and won't accept any Torx fit, and my door lock cylinder tends to pop out anywhere between 1/8" to 1/4" (it's the kind with no key, just a smooth surface). I'd like to replace that release screw, or at least get out the Dremmel and make slots to accept a standard flat screwdriver. That's always a go to, if the screw isn't that hard to work on.
