Probably the best way for someone who's never removed windows to do so. A cold knife or a pull knife as they're called by some are much easier and faster. But those are more difficult for a beginner to use. If pulling windshields is something you will do several times I'd recommend trying to get good with one. And like someone else replied, spray some water around the window, it will make it go smoother. Also if you start in the bottom corner, work your way up and around to the opposite bottom corner. Then use a long knife, basically a long thin handle with a razor blade on the end. Push out on the top of the window and put something in-between the window and pinch weld to hold it up as far as it will go without cracking it, and slice along the bottom.
@Hick255 жыл бұрын
just a couple of tips mate, in case you do it again, you don’t need to use the probe in the kit to get it wire through, just poke it through with a pair of long nose pliers, especially if you want to save the windshield. but if you do use the the probe do it down the bottom where there’s a lot more room, and get someone to help you wire it out, makes it a hell of a lot easier

@albinullanger78625 жыл бұрын
Good job, it came out nicely. Love the idea too, i work with autoglass for a living, and it's relativly easy. Id however recommend against sawing the urethane, the heat from the friction releases isocyanates, basically cancerstuff. Use a "cold" metod. When taking out an easy car like this, use the "L-knife" instead, or have another guy help you PULL and force the thread through the urethane. Cold methods that doesn't develop heat in the process. It works best with a piano style wire, not the "Wired" wire 😁 I hope people take this advice, that smoke is dangerous.
@steveandrews83013 жыл бұрын
It works best with piano wire, ie, single strand wire? What is "the 'Wired' wire"?, that comes with this kit - braided wire? Thanks.
@charlesfields79083 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking piano wire. Me and a buddy use to go to junkyards and pull windshields for his daily drivers using piano string. We would file a sharp point on one end shove it through the urethane then use 1 inch thick wood dowels wrap the wire around them for pull handles to cut the urethane. Bit hillbilly but it worked.
@davecc00002 жыл бұрын
@@steveandrews8301 I think by "wired wire" he mans steel cable. The cable has many strands which makes it tempting to "saw" through the urethane adhesive, which Albin Ullanger says releases toxic gas as it heats up the urethane. A piano wire has no strands (it's smooth) so can be be *pulled* through the urethane, unlike the cable which will hang up because of the many strands.

I'm a professional glass installer, this is probably one of the worst ways you could possibly take out a window rather than just smashing it with a hammer around the edge. There are plenty of good videos on youtube of professional glass installers showing you how we do it. But seriously, just like a mechanic, you are paying us because we have tons of money invested in tools because it's all we do everyday, and we have YEARS of experience and know tons of tricks and what NOT to do. You as a normal person can literally total your car trying to do this yourself with no knowledge. Certain models of cars you can just cut right through the metal the glass is bonded to and if you cut it off, you're pretty much ruined.

As a professional glass installer, this is probably the worst way you could take a windshield out. And you pay us for our tools and experience. What would be an all day project for most with no experience, and not to mention extremely dangerous for MANY reasons, takes us about an hour for most vehicles if not less. And 100% backing that your car isnt ruined, AND guaranteeing your safety when the glass goes back in. ALSO, if you do cut your windshield out, DO NOT trim the urethane left on the car until like minutes before the new glass goes in. Dude ruined the bonding ability of that urethane by cutting it back when he said the car wont have glass put back in it for quite some time, AND getting painted. If you need help bud, just ask. A little advice would save you a lot of time, money, and possibly your health.
@BuildsbyBailey Жыл бұрын
I couldn’t disagree with you more. There is a time and a place for the type of work you do. I would gladly hire someone to remove and install glass in a newer car that is being driven everyday. However this is a long term project car. In no way in making this video has there been irreparable damage caused to this car. The only damage caused by this method was a few scratches on the dashboard. That part has since been prepped and painted to prevent more rust.
@Warriormedic68 Жыл бұрын
@BuildsbyBailey I'm not saying you damaged this car in the video, aside from taking the urethane off way too soon. But this method is not user friendly at all, I know, I do this 40-60 hours a week on every car manufactured and sold in the United States. There are far better and safer ways to do this. Someone else might see this video and think they can do it, and they end up way over their head, and could easily damage their car beyond repair in some cases. I have seen experienced auto glass technicians do it by accident. I'm certain someone at home with no real knowledge of what they are doing, they are just following a youtube video that may not be specific to their exact vehicle and because of that they will destroy their car. More power to you for getting it done, but this is not great advice for most people watching.
