For this method. Yes. Its much faster to do it this way. The building would be way too intricate for Content Aware Fill to handle.

Can you copy a photo and use this technique, or do you have to have 2 of the same or similar photos?

This can not be done with a duplicate file. It must be a second shot from a slightly different angle.

This technique is amazing. Why didn't it erase other things in the photo as you masked off? It seems that your brush didn't stay exactly on the lamp post, but it didn't erase everything it touched.

If Im understanding your question correctly, It actually did erase everything I painted over, but the data that I replaced it with (from the second frame) was spot on aligned so it "looks" as if I only erased the lamp post.
