I happen to own a '77 turbo and a '87 G50, getting the engine drop is a bit easier with the G50, simply for the reason of shorter shifter rod which does not intrude into the cabin. Nice videos and very informative, thanks !

g50 trans fits pre g50 cars with modification of bell housing, Patrick motorsport will do the mod as they did to mine and they also sell adapter for connecting it to the shifter than 930 clutch can be used which is much smaller than g50 one,

It's very little extra work to remove both drive shafts completely before dropping the engine so they don't get caught on the G'box. During one of my engine drops I snagged a shaft on something and bent up the UJ shield so that the bellows don't fit. Also those little roller tube bearing in the clutch release fork are rubish and always wear out the shaft. I fitted bronze bushes in the fork and drilled the shaft so that I can pump grease in from the bolt side to lubricate everything. Great watching your engine drop, been there a few times.

Good idea. The G50 shafts don't separate from the stub axle like earlier cars, so it's a bit more work to remove and not trash the seals or bearings. My trans already has the bronze bushings, but I guess they used the wrong grease? Or the shaft was already worn. Good idea to add a grease nipple.

You don't need to seperate them. Undo the big 36mm nut on the wheel side, a good tap on the centre of the spline shaft and they just pop out (in). All the seals and bearing stay in the hub, so much easier with them out of your face.

That reminds me of removing my 1967S engine to change the clutch. And I didn't have a lift. Nasty! But I'm sure you knew what you were in for because it's pretty obvious when the car is driving on five cylinders.

I've done it without a lift too, and I agree it's not as fun. The driving symptoms are a very noticeable low speed misfire.

Nice looking 911. The 911 I’m building on my channel had 2 bad cylinders on a 8k mile motor. Turned out to be 2 bent valves and not the guilds that I thought. Looking forward to see the next video. -Spanky

@@GarageTimeAutoResto mine was going to be a $150 fix for 2 valves. But went a head and had my heads checked and all looked great. But they CNC cut my 2 heads getting the new valves for the large sizes valves. So Zi got all new valves in all the heads for $1600 . And maybe a few extra Horsepower. It was fun learning to Porsche motors after a lifetime on old American hot rod work. See you in the next episode. -Spanky

@@GarageTimeAutoResto Memphis Motor Works my motor is from Pat Williams Racing,also in Memphis. Pat worked at MMW before he stepped out of his own many years ago. Both are the top of the top in the Memphis area .

You almost made it look easy! How do you like the MaxJax? Looks super useful without taking up a tonne of room. With cylinder 5 a goner, it's a "full" rebuild then?

The Max Jax makes it easy. I love it. Will most likely do a video replacing the seals as it just started leaking a bit. I'll know more next week, but I suspect the heads will need a rebuild for sure. Pistons and cylinders are probably fine, so hopefully just a "top end" rebuild.

I really like the level of detail in your videos, Tom. If you were dropping the engine/trans assembly working straight through without video recording, how long do you estimate it would take you get the assembly on the dollies? And your seats look great. Also, the under carraige looks to be in top condition…no dents, scrapes, rust holes. Solid car.

Thanks Mike, it's a pretty nice car. The top needs some work, but the car is very original and complete. I think I could remove the engine/trans in under 4 hours for sure, probably three. I took Mac's engine out in about 45 minutes, but there is much less stuff to disconnect.

Hi Tod, Amazon link for hose pliers is in the video description. Totally worth the $10, but a heat gun or hot water helps too.
