Great watching you rebuild this engine. A 911 might be in my future if I get rid of my British stuff!

Great video! If you want your entire engine and all the aluminum parts to look brand spanking new I can't recommend highly enough cerakote 7700 line Glacier silver. It's basically impervious to acetone oil and anything you can imagine once dry. Goes on in a very thin coat but covers extremely quickly. You don't need to bake it, just allow two hours or so for it to dry. It has the exact look of a raw aluminum, will not discolor later. Keeps that fresh brand new look like your fan shroud and blades had before you had to purchase the shroud from Einmalig. I recently done two complete 308 Ferrari engines. They look absolutely spectacular. I have built over a hundred 911s over the past three decades and wish I would have known about the cerakote 7700 line. Cannot recommend it enough! 8 or 16 oz is only around $75. Definitely worth a try, if you are afraid to try it not much money invested. I promise you will 100% love it. Like no other paint, cerakote seems more like a oven-baked finish. 7700 line you will not have to heat treat to cure.

Thanks for the tip. I have some cerakote here and will do a video on it soon. I agree it's good stuff. I just bought the smaller tip for my spray gun per cerakote's recommendation. Hopefully it turns out nice.

I find your videos invaluable. I’ve been thinking of dipping my toes into the Porsche world, so I watch your videos to see what I’d be getting myself. More detail is always welcome IMO.

Thx, I don't blame KZbin at all. It's just that there are very few people who want to do this much work on an old car. But plenty of people want to see a broken 911 engine and guess why it broke. Fixing it is just boring.

Nice work as usual Tom, engine is looking great! DIN 661 is the spec of the rivets with the right angle. Did you put any finish on the fan after vapor blasting? Might be worth it to conserve the nice finish, otherwise it’s going to oxidize very quickly. Cerakote makes some durable clear coats, that should work even now that’s it’s assembled. And fyi there is a guy on pelican that specializes in welding the fans and housings, apparently great work at fair prices. I have the name saved somewhere if you can’t find it. And by the way, you can build a very capable small vapor blasting setup for about $500 using one of the 220L harbor freight style cabinets…. 🤓

I'm going to try Shark Hyde. It's a marine grade aluminum alloy protectant. I bought it for my 356 decklid grills. Cerakote clear is also a good option.

Nice work. Interesting Porsche used rivets instead of bolts with Loctite or similar. Is there a pop rivet that would be strong enough? As always, I enjoy your level of detail.

I'm sure Porsche has a better method than I did for quickly assembling this. The aluminum rivets are pretty soft, but plenty strong. Pop rivets would work, but it's hard to match that conical shape I think. Now I need to do Mac's fan🤣 I'm not sure why this Cab is getting all the good stuff?

The fan blade looks like it received Cerakote paint rather than just vapor blasted. Nothing sets off the engine like a great looking fan assembly...

Looks great Tom! Will the naked vapor blasted magnesium parts hold the finish they now have over time?

Will see. I coated them in shark Hyde. It's an aluminum protectant for pontoon boats.

Shouldn’t that assembly be balanced? Good luck! It looks great!
@GarageTimeAutoResto

Will see if it vibrates, but it went back together in the same way it came apart. The center is a tight fit to the fan blades and there is no sign of balance from the factory that I could see.

NO, there is no reason to. The hub can only go on one way and there is ZERO slop of the hub in the fan indent. I naively assumed my VW Type IV engine fan was the same. Nope, screws instead of rivets, no locating pin, and plenty of slop. Need to get that pig balanced...

Thanks for sharing. I agree that it's a very nice fit prior to riveting. I balanced and welded my 356 fan because they are a wobbly and fragile mess.
