Make sure that small screw on the side of your nozzle is tight, i've found them loose right out of the box a couple times. No bueno

Use a special tool to tighten adapter 7/8 side of fuel line. I took one and modified it to clear Jake stud. If Jake has 3/8 bolt exhaust side they torque to 48 Ft Lbs. If they have 7/16 bolt they torque to 60 Ft Lbs. Torque nuts first to 48 or 60. Then torque bolts to size mentioned above. Torque nuts to 100 Ft Lbs and recheck bolt torque. If the engine had a three point stand and a kit was installed to increase braking it went to a four point stand. So it is possible to have a 3/8 and 7/16 bolt in the same engine. Also it don't hurt to shim the brake so it sets flat. Seen a lot of broken hsg's due to incorrect washer installation. Always run the over head with the Jake bolted down. A 346D brake will have the updated parts. You can use a D brake on everything, but you can't use a earlier design on a later engine. Not required to run overhead but I like to while valve covers are off. If you don't tighten the Jake valve cover hsg down correctly you will break the ends off. Put a little glue on valve cover gasket joint where it over laps. If you replaced the carbon dam seals its best to slide nozzle in some and pull it back out. Have seen carbon dam seal get cut. I keep a chamber in my tool box and test them before I install them. Also good ideal to replace oring on rocker arms that feeds Jake with oil. You go to the Jacobs web page and print out a lot of info. Always check bleed screw on the side and make sure they are tight. Replace seal if reusing nozzle.

Use a puller instead of a slide hammer if you plan on reusing injectors -per Cat shop manual. Some risk of loosening a tip with slide hammer. You do make good vids though. Wish you would make one on barrel and plunger r & i. I only do it about every two years and I always have to read certain parts of the manual over and over to remember it all. Besides, manual only shows doing it with a special spring compressor tool which I do not have- nor anyone I know. Thanks man- you r an asset to KZbin. BTW, I am a big fan of "torque stripes"

Just getting into the trucking world and I have an 86 W900L with a 91 3406B and it had jakes before but someone took them off. Just need some help trying to figure out how to install and make sure I get them done right

Go to Jacobs Brake web site. You can print out whatever info you need. Parts manual, installation, etc. I would try and locate a 346D brake. Be warned, the middle valve cover base cracks very easily. You will need clutch and throttle switch, cab switches, fuse and basic wiring. If you use the original KW wiring it has relays for front and rear. You will need a KW schematic. Or you can rewire the complete system. See my comments down lower

I have a 09 C-15 that’s blowing oil out the crankcase filter housing. This is only happening under a load and not during idle. I’m assuming it’s caused by high crankcase pressure. Is this motor shot?

Tim Kellar if you have a 2009 c15 sell it, it was junk when it was new,boat anchor is the only use for that motor,don't ever sub any cat motor newer than a 2002, 6nz or older is only way to go

That blow-by was insane. So, on these engines, is this the fuel injector actuated by the pump and no injector above the cylinder?

Called pump and line. Cat used forged body, sleeve metering, scroll and new scroll. This is new scroll. Fuel flows from tank, primary filter to Fuel Transfer Pump (FTP). Low psi from FTP to secondary fuel filter into fuel manifold in injection pump, 20 psi min under load. Usually around 40 psi idle and High Idle. Sometimes drops to 30 psi. Injection line psi can reach 17,000 psi. High psi line from injection pump to nozzle. In line adapter in cylinder head. Fuel nozzle acts as a check valve. When enough psi is applied the needle valve lifts off its seat. Fuel is sprayed through holes in the tip of the nozzle. When psi drops needle valve closes and stops flow. If trash is under needle valve fuel could drip onto piston. With age nozzle tip wears and holes enlarge. Thus more fuel and if they continue to grow eventually you will see a black stream of smoke going out the exhaust all the time under load. I have seen someone replace all six nozzles and lose over 100 H.P. All high psi lines are equal in length to keep psi same on all cylinders. The injection pump has a check valve in it to prevent fuel from running back out of high psi fuel line. Older engines now called A models had PCT, PCTA, DIT, DITA. DI's was about the same stands for Direct Injection. Fuel spray's into the combustion chamber. PC- Precombustion Chamber, sprayed fuel into a chamber in the cylinder head and down onto the piston. Both of these engine had capsule nozzles. If they went bad you throw them away, no reman. Capsule nozzles threaded onto the nozzle body and when you got close you snap them fast to lock them to the body. PC had a single hole out the bottom and DI's were longer and had around six holes. PC engines got around 3.5 mpg, as fuel was cheap nobody cared. Fuel prices went up, emissions got tighter and PC engines became obsolete. Back in the day when someone put DI piston's in a PC engine or PC pistons in a DI you had to scratch your head until you figured it out. With higher emission regulations more psi was needed and the new scroll system became obsolete. Now we have common rail with psi over 30,000 psi.

I have a 94 3406b 3zj and I’ve got a slight miss in the engine. I’ve run 10 gallons of atf through her over last two weeks and didn’t change anything. My mechanic is going to try cracking fuel lines next week to see if it’s any particular fuel line causing miss. Could a fuel nozzle be causing the miss I just changed the oil and there wasn’t any diesel in it.

Proto makes a special 3/4 drive 1 1/8 extra deep socket for the rocker arm studs. Since it is special no warranty if you break it.

Yes, a bad nozzle can definitely cause bad fuel burn in the cylinder. You could you have a bad plunger in the pump as well.

What is your full engine serial number? The 7E5888 is just the casting number on the housing. The number that tells you what it is, is stamped on top of the fuel pump. They are called nozzles, not injectors, 7000 series to be exact. Make sure you have the updated bushings and seals when you rebuild it.

3406 A has capsule nozzles. Take a old fuel line nut (3/4 size) and make a slide hammer.

Do you know why the lifters of a 3406b engine would keep breaking. It’s been different lifters every time. But 3 have broken in 3 years.

Valve lifters? Overspeed is the main cause, wear, and on Jake Brake engines lifter inspection at mid life helps reduce failure.

yea the valve lifters. had to change the cam shaft all 3 times too. Its rated under 400hp i think, can that also be a problem it pulls 70k-79k most of the time @@johngoldsmith6629

@@119aponte Did you change all the lifters the first time or one at a time. The biggest failure is over speeding the engine. Is the lifter turning in the bore or breaking? Still sounds like over speed. Go to your local Cat dealer and ask for these, SEBD6564, SEBD6578, SEBD6607, SEBD6655 and SEBD6810.

Hello great video, is there like a mileage intervals that your supposed to change out the injectors or you just replace them when they go bad ? I have one go bad on mine started leaking fuel in the motor should I replaced all of them or just that on that’s bad or should I take them for testing TIA

These are called nozzles, not injectors. As the nozzles wear, the tip opens up and allows more fuel in the cylinder. By changing all six you could lose 100 HP. Also as they wear they dribble fuel and when they get so worn out, you will have a constant haze out the exhaust. Now as far as fuel in the oil, FTP very seldom, main injection pump, usually when someone tried to reseal a leaking pump and mostly under the valve cover. So your nozzle is in a chamber. You have two holes on top for the tool to fit in. BE CAREFUL, blow air in one side and see what comes out the other side. Put some gloves on and see if it is clear which means a leak. If dark usually means not leaking. You can try and isolate the cylinder, if it is a nozzle. A nozzle can leak at the top inner seal, which is not repairable or the outer bleed screw seal which you can. If you don't find one, pull all the nozzles and take them with the inner fuel lines and psi test them for a leak. If you reuse any nozzle, replace the bleed screw seal and the carbon dam seal. The carbon dam seal can be tricky and you can cut them when you install them back into the nozzle chamber. So slide them in a bit and pull them back out to inspect. Also you have a washer on the bottom and don't double stack one or leave one off.

@@johngoldsmith6629 great info thanks, and yes I meant nozzles so we did find which one was leaking and replaced it with a reman one, that took care of the diesel in the oil, but I did noticed I have more blow by now then before I had almost no blow-by I think I’m gonna need a rebuilt soon, I thought that nozzle was gonna take care of the blueish/white smoke but I’d did not, so we went and replaced all 6 nozzles with reman ones from cat thinking maybe couple of injectors were bad since I had that one go bad might as well but I still have that same smoking problem it’s really stinky and it burns your eyes as hell. You think my problem is in the pump? I was told it might be my Air fuel ratio valve or a burn valve on the head ? Oh and I never thought replacing all nozzles I’d lose power I’d think the opposite

@@snipermex13 Depends on how the nozzle failed. Cat had extrude hone nozzles they tried on 3ZJ's and they was a POS. They did not open up but plugged up. So serial number means a lot on a 3406 to put it in the right vintage. Most other 7000 series nozzles open up. All 3406 B and C's has a timing problem. 7FB and early 4MG's cannot be fixed and will have a slipping problem over time. All 3406 B and C VTU needs to be inspected every two years. Make sure the snap ring is not broken and the bolts are not working out. Repaired 100's of them and most of what I see now are assembled wrong and people mess with the screws up front which is a big mistake. Never reuse the bolts in a vtu that times the pump or the small allen head bolts. Seen them break or loosen up. Now when you say smoking, are you talking fumes tube or exhaust? FRC only comes in play when you accelerate, unless somebody has assembled it wrong and I seen lots of that as well. I would check pin timing first and some Cat shops has a blowby meter to see how much wear you have. Best to test it on a chassis dyno.

Man i have a 3406c an I have fuel leak on too of pump how do I replace the orings without replacing pump. Someone said it's a 2 to 21/2 hours Job??

Seen people fix one or all. When you pull the leaking pump you need to see which seal you have. If it is pink you can try and fix the one that is leaking. Any other color you better pull all six or you might end end up nickel and dime yourself. The latest seal part number is a 131-3719. You will need to have a pin to center the rack in the fuel system and a tool to remove the bushing. IF YOU DON"T PULL THE PUMP ALL THE WAY OUT AND CLEAN. You will put fuel in your oil. You have bushing, o-ring, pump and a spacer. You must be clean or you can cause more problems than it's worth. Also if you have the old style bushing you need to update it. Take the bonnet off the pump and see which style you have. Again you have an updated one. Check also for bypassing. If the spacer is pitted replace it. You will have to center the rack first before you remove the pump. Remove shutoff, remove plug under air compressor. Remove cover on the side, two bolts. Install pin where you pulled the plug out, put throttle in fuel on position to put pin against the rack center and remove pump and spacer. CLEAN, CLEAN and be CLEAN. Align the pump and reinstall. Put CLEAN fuel on bushing and the seal. If the lobe is up you will have to turn the engine. Put seal and bushing in and screw down until it seats. After you put pump back in you need to make sure it is in time. If the rack is locked up you can over speed your engine. You can be a tooth off and it will miss or knock. Go to your local Cat dealer and ask for these, SEBD6676, SEBD6655, SEBD6553. After you check the pump for free rack and timing you can torque that pump. After torque, check again for free rack. Also if your fuel line clamps are missing you need to install them. I use a 8PN serial number as a guide on these. They have the latest hardware picture in SIS. If your fuel return line is plugged, it will put extra pressure on the system and make the leak. I dislike a number four line. A number six or eight is better. Some times when you fix a leak, another pump may start. If number one or two is leaking, reseal both of these as they are under the air compressor. I have fixed hundreds of these in my forty years. Depending on the fuel lines, location and such. Takes me about one hour IF no problems occur for one. Around three for all six. Depends on each truck, and if the owner allows you to fix it properly or patch it.

Had an oil leak in the cone got a new took the old one off little screws fell out found out that was part of my mechanical advance need to fix it but don't know how

@@JC-gu8pp You have a C model. The bolts that usually come out are allen head. Sometimes they will cut the cone off. Are you planning to take the whole unit off and reseal it? Or just fix what's broken. I like to reseal them, your call. Who is your local Cat dealer?

please help which nozzles inject more fuel 7014 7018 7019 even 7020 I wanted to put less fuel into my cylinder to reduce black smoke. I took our OR3436 and repalced with 7018 and smoke increased

Nozzles are based mainly on the tip design. They match the bowl of the piston, angle and number of holes. Changing the angle could cause piston damage.

1H1023 cheaper 8L2779 more expensive The seal is only good for a leak at the line to adapter joint. It forces the fuel to leak out the adapter rather then into the engine.

Nozzle bleed screw seal leaking, nozzle top seal leaking (have to replace nozzle), Fuel transfer pump (very rare), spacers under pump cracked (very rare) or somebody resealed a pump leaking fuel and got dirt under pump. Fuel line at nozzle connection or adapter thru the head connection (that connection suppose to leak to the outside).

@@threesisterstrucking8044 Remove the valve covers. The nozzle chamber cap has two holes. Put your finger over one side and take psi air and be careful, put air in the other hole. If solid black oil comes out that nozzle is OK. If diesel fuel comes out, you found a leaking nozzle.

@@johngoldsmith6629 I know it's all mechanical and looks the same but I almost bet that motor has a 3zj serial number and it would have the wide crank journals which is good but they suck for making power until you build them
