Two things to add: After reconnecting the radiator, make sure the heater is not pumping while opening the valves to the empty radiator, or tons of air will enter your whole system. And check the pressure gauge on the heater and refill as needed, because the system just lost one radiator worth of water.
@Scirokko
@Scirokko 4 жыл бұрын
I think after reconnect the radiator, should open the valve for bleeding the radiator (top right in the video) and the valve with the thermostatic valve (bottom left) which allow the water inside the radiator, while keep the valve in the bottom right shut, otherwise the air will pump in the sistem. When the air is all out can open the right valve so start the normal flow. Not sure where can top up the water back into the sistem (the one that being lost from taking out the radiator in first place), that's why I'm reading the comments

LA LA I know that you wrote this a year ago, but for future reference and for anyone else alarmed by “Richard’s” dramatic response, please don’t worry! I’ve removed and replaced about four radiators since learning from this very video. The only thing might be to reintroduce the pressure back into the system via the boiler, I’m sure Al’s probably already done a video on that. Don’t listen to the drama queens though 🙄 Good luck! _Disclaimer, only get a plumber in if you’re _*_really_*_ not confident following this technique, or if you have inadequate tools for the job._

@@Scirokko most boilers will allow you to top up the pressure at the final stage like bleeding radiatiors. Repeat as necessary.

Hi Al. I know this is an older video but, once again, I just wanted to say thank you for all your advice on this channel. Our house is 15yrs old and our double panel, Type 21, radiator wasn’t getting hot in the front panel. Things have been chilly over last winter in our Lounge. I tried Fernox F3 cleaner to no avail. Then I removed the radiator and gave it a blast with our garden hose - no joy, sadly. Today, having finished redecorating, I connected up the new radiator and all is good. Your videos have given me the confidence to tackle these jobs and do them well - no leaks whatsoever at the first refill. We have found it so easy that we’ve also replaced the other radiators on the ground floor of our house so that they all match and are pure white. Thanks again. My next plumbing project is to prepare for our washing machine being moved into our integrated garage prior to tackling the big one, the Kitchen refit. You’re a superstar and your guidance is helping us all save money on these repairs and projects at a time when the cost of living is reminding me of life in the 1970s! Best wishes.

These DIY videos are priceless - thank you. What I would say though, in this video, the radiator and fixture and fittings are all newish. When I tried this on mine a few years back, on an old system, I had a job getting a water tight seal on the unions when I reassembled. I eventually did using some mastic but the threads were worn so something to look out for.

Removing the side and top covers makes it easier to hold... Slipping two old plastic cards between the unions before you lift stops them from catching...the lock shield should be opened the same number of turns it took to close it to preserve the balance... And you will probably have to let more water into the system via the filling loop of its a tankless system...

When fitting the radiator back into place would it not have been better to open the thermoststic valve side BUT keep the other side closed so that the air that is now inside the radiator doesn't get pumped into the central heating system? Keep the valve closed, open the theromststic valve and bleed all the air out with the key. Wait for water to come out at the top. Top up the system from the boiler then open the valve on the other side of the radiator . My 2pence worth!

Amazing! Thanks for your brilliant step by step explanation, I've managed to do it with no help :) after someone said to me "you can't take the radiators off to paint the wall" I just typed it on KZbin, watched your video and did it!

dereton33 Hi! it turned out to be quite challenging as the water from the thermostatic valve end didn't stop flowing, after filling up 4 buckets I realised something was not quite right; my bet was that that valve wasn't closed just by turning the thermostat to zero. I went to but a cap for replacing the thermostatic one (for making sure it would be close) but they don't sell, instead I bought a cap for the pipe that joints with the radiator, which made me force the pipe to move it outwards... but that was the only thing that worked. Any advice for the rest of the radiators??

No that is the only way if your rad valves do not except 15 mm caps.

Just removed a rad with your help!! Used plumbers up until now but thought we would give it a go before some plaster work. Granted the rad was new so no scary faulty valves which we already experienced before ( up a whole night mopping up the flow) Informative video. Just need to refit it now!!

Thanks for your great video. I had never really had cause to remove radiators in the past, but found that I needed to. I was a bit apprehensive about doing so! Now, I have removed and replaced two; one small and one large with no problems. Thanks a lot; I hope others have the confidence to do so too.

I'm currently in the process of draining, I think the pipe moved a bit when I was slackening the nut off. (I did use two spanners to brace it as you said) and I think a little bit of water is now leaking out of the valve where it connects to the pipe. What can I do to sort that? Cheers.
