How often do you replace your BB? Did you find these tips helpful?

Very helpful. I am about to do my first one on my commuter bike, headed to the shop to see if they can get my parts. I like working on my own bikes if possible because its fun.

At 13:28 you mentioned that you have the plastic spacer on the non-drive-side cup.. isn't the spacer supposed to be on the drive-side if you're using one?

I’ve found on deore and slx cranks, that once you have removed preload cap and undone pinch bolts, there is a safety tab you need to flick up before you should remove the crank
@jordanlajeunesse44643 жыл бұрын
i also noticed doddy didnt undo this while taking the cranks off. Makes it much easier because that tab actually puts a pin in a hole in the spindle locking it on.

Do you guys know which Park Tool socket to use for the Bb52? I can’t find on their website Also, if I wanted to upgrade to an MT800, is that a different socket?
@CoasterJames2 жыл бұрын
@@Jacob99174 I have the bbt9. This I could use to remove the deore bottom bracket. The mt800 is smaller but comes with a piece of plastic which you insert into the tool to remove the bottom bracket. I’m not a fan as it’s hard to insert the plastic into the tool and then a very tight fit on the bottom bracket. I would look for better tool

How do you know when to replace a bottom bracket to things just get loose or is there like a mileage standard you should be looking at?
@rockytrails80743 жыл бұрын
Using an automotive air wrench gun will get a seized BB unstuck. Start on low setting & be careful of course! This is where the socket BB tools really can shine. Much easier than busting your knuckles trying to hold the regular ratchet wrenches to the cup properly.
@chrisridesbicycles3 жыл бұрын
#askGMBNtech I have one bike with XTR BB and one bike with XT BB. Both come with a plastic ring adapter to make them fit the standard tool but none of these adapters fit the standard blue Park Tool cup (only by a smidge). Why is that?

Hi Doddy great show by the way! I have an orbea rallon M10 2018. Believe it or not I have gone through 10 DUB BB’s since having the bike from new.! they Dont last at all as I tide up in the peak district a lot sand/dirt and as you the no the weather can be horrendous. Just wondering if Hope BB’s or Chris King are better? Perhaps a silly question but need to ask as Im replacing them all the time. I get alot of play after a month too. Cheers Jon

Changing a BB for the first time and need a little advice/have stupid question: Bike is a 2018 Whyte 905 WITH SRAM GXP BB as standard. I've just ordered a Wheels MFG BB as a replacement, but it's arrived with a million spacers and some wavy washers (which weren't on the original BB.) My first thoughts were to install the new BB without Spacers, as the old BB didn't have any fitted BUT the actual cups of the new BB (the external part, not including the threaded section) are thinner than the original BB, so maybe I need spacers to maintain the proper Chainline? Or do I just throw it a the bike and be done with it? 🤔🙄🤦🏼♂️ Apologies for stupid questions, first time I've done this. Cheers. Steve

With these BBs if you do not use loads of grease when you get to the threadlock you can easily crossthread it. The other option is to screw in and back out to remove the excess thread lock or clean it off entirely and apply some fresh stuff that's easier to screw in.
@BGraves3 жыл бұрын
The threadlock they use also serves to keep water out of the threads and the internals of the bottom bracket

@Jacob991742 жыл бұрын
I’m wondering the same. Looks like he went from bb52 to a MT800? Just be careful, I think they used different sockets due to size
@scottlstone3 жыл бұрын
I hate the Park Tool Preload Tool, clearly has a design flaw, one side has a hook (use for pulling up the plastic clip) but when you unscrew the preload nut if you’re not careful the hook on the tool can put a deep scrape in the crank arm (fortunately mine had sticker protection). The hook needed to be machined on the back side of the tool! I would be interested if anyone else has this tool and experienced similar problem?

Little tech question for doddy! I’ve got a sram gxp 83mm English threaded bottom bracket which are currently pretty unavailable in the uk at a affordable price. The skinnier 70-60 (ish) width model is still readily available though. my question is is what’s the difference? The bb comes in 3 parts with each cup and then a plastic spacer tube in the middle. Could I buy the skinnier bb and swap out the plastic spacer to achieve the 83mm from the 60-70 version? Cheers for anyone that can Help, louie
@rufuswood70923 жыл бұрын
Sorry - this isn’t answering your question! but where are you finding 73mm GXP bb in the uk - i need to replace mine and can’t find one anywhere !
@scruffygit7713 жыл бұрын
Yep, you could do that. The bearing cups on their own are the same whatever size width you buy and so you could throw away the new skinnier tubes and replace with your existing 83mm centre tubes.

Imagine your buddy asks you to do some work on his bike and you cross thread everything in on purpose 😂 you’d be paying for that huh my boss
@tylersimpson5541 Жыл бұрын
You cut the chain a little too big on purpose, size the high and low screws a little too tight on both ends and give just a little bit too much cable tension on the shifter paddle adjuster lol
@tylersimpson5541 Жыл бұрын
Coat the chain in a heavy grease and say yeah that’s just lube it’s ready to go man 🎉😅 then strip all the hex fittings with an Allen key that’s a size too small. Throw in the wrong oil in the brake lines and pump a few small air bubbles in there with a syringe
