FYI: The grease already in the hub from the factory is to prevent the raceway from rusting being as it is bare uncoated metal and easily oxidizes. You were correct in removing it and packing it with the correct bearing grease.

Thank you so much for this video! By adjusting the wheel hub nut as shown in this video, I was able to fix following symptoms: Brake Rotor Wobble/Steering wheel wobble coming to stop at stop signs, Suspension Wobble over potholes, Tire shoulders ripped on outsides both sides (Toe-in misalignment), Tire shoulder ripping up inside on the side with play in wheel hub adjustment (Toe-out misalignment). Thank you!

Excellent video with really easy to follow instructions, probably one of the best videos I’ve seen. Being a novice and based on this video I would of been very happy to tackle the wheel bearings on my s350, until I saw the section with the adjustment device and setting the adjustment, this is where I wouldn’t know what I was doing, which is a shame as up to this point I would of had no problem replacing the wheel bearings on my car, but I guess there is no point being confident on 3 quarters of the job 😔 But still a great video 👍

Hello Rich Gille! Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad this video has inspired you. I can understand how you feel about the Dial Indicator. I believe you can do it though. My advice would be just to play with the dial indicator on other objects to get a feel for how to use it. Once you get the hang of it then try it on the wheel bearing again. One thing to note is that the digital version is a lot easier to use and it's just as accurate. I hope you give your wheel bearing project another try and I'd love to hear how things went for you. Cheers!

Another great video. when your wheel hub was bad did you notice a rubbing sort of noise while turning the steering wheel with the brakes depressed? I was wondering how does your hub come off so easily? I've seen a number of videos where they need huge pneumatic devices to pull these hubs off. I live in socal and even if my rotors are fairly new they get seized on and require a puller... do you think I will struggle with the hub itself? I have a 2010 e550. Also just curious on your opinion I purchased moog complete wheel hubs with everything and it seems they greased it as well.. is this sufficient or should I put my own grease on these items? @@GarageDynamics

That last nut on the bearing is that what holds everything together including your wheels?
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 2 жыл бұрын
Hello A.I, As far as I know, yes. I'll look deeper into it. But we can cover it together. What do we know so far? We have the knuckle and that connects to the upper strut and lower control arm. Then the knuckle terminates at the shaft. From the shaft we have the wheel hub. The wheel hub rest on the wheel bearings and the wheel bearings rest on the shaft. This is what allows the wheels to rotate. Then next we have the brake rotor, that is supported by the wheel hub. Now we thread on the shaft locking nut which holds the wheel hub onto the spindle shaft, the hub holds the brake rotor and the wheels are mounted to the brake rotor which threads through to the wheel hub. The whole reason we adjust end play on the wheels is because the nut isn't adjusted to spec (too loose) which means that the nut is holding the whole wheel in place. If I made an error somewhere please correct me :)

Interesting video. But if you don't trust the manufacturer's choice of grease for the bearings and hub, why are you putting the part on your car? That said, in fairness, the hub and bearings in this video look great. And its good to finally see someone use a dial indicator to properly set the tension on their bearings. Keep up the good work.

And don't forget blue Loctite on brake bolts before torquing them. And anti-seize grease on the mating surfaces of the hub and roter and rotor and wheel to prevent rust, so you can get things apart next time.

Very good how-to video. A few comments: 1. You did not check the condition of the old bearings and races which might have indicated that all that was needed was cleaning and new lubrication, rather than replacement of the bearings. 2. There should not be grease outside of the grease seal on the inside of the hub. 3. You might also want to check runout on the contact surface of the rotor after remounting it on the hub. 4. Mercedes manual says to set runout of bearing by loosening the nut beyond the set-point, and then tightening the nut to its final position, as a more reliable method of achieving the final setting.

And if you use a short piece of soft wood molding as a drift on the raised rim of the dust cover, your can re-install the dust cover without denting it. This is a good job to do when you change brake rotors.

I liked the video. However, aren't you supposed to fill the dust cap with a specific weight of grease? I believe for easy measuring it's about half full.
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 3 жыл бұрын
Hello James S, Thank you! In regards to filling the dust cap with grease. It's not necessary to do so. You can add a small amount of grease if you wold like. However, it is more necessary to fill the inside of the wheel hub with grease between the two bearings. That's where the bearings will draw extra grease from if needed. I hope this helps.

So I did all this but adjusted it by hand and also based off your wheel bearing from when you tightened it and your final result it gives me a rough idea on how much difference it should go back, but I’ve had the weirdest problem and I’ve replaced the pads and rotor and wheel bearing hub assembly, but when I accelerate past 50 the front right wheel vibrates they’re short quick vibrations, sort of how it feels to drive over the shoulder bumps on a highway it stops when I stop accelerating hard, but returns when I try to accelerate more than 5% on throttl at that speed. I don’t know what else to replace I’ve adjusted the wheel bearing to tight then to loose ish then to what I think it should be and same result, it’s been a month for trying to figure it out
@elianangelmoreno
@elianangelmoreno 3 жыл бұрын
Three things I can think of The wheel bearing neeeeds to be tighter to the exact spec and can’t possibly be any more or less and that’s why I’m getting my vibration/shake The spindle that hold the bearing might have possibly bent the slightest from the previous wheel bearing being bad Or finally the spring popped out a little on one edge and when I put it back in I pushed it back in wrong and the spring is an important part somehow idk what it does
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Elian Moreno, Sorry to hear about your wheel situation. The most common sign that your wheel bearing nut is loose, is wobble in the steering wheel. You will notice this wobble at almost any speed. The steering wheel will wobble more if the bearings are really loose. If your wheel bearing is tight but still slightly out of spec, then you will experience a small wobble. More similar to a steering wheel vibration. If your wheel bearing nut is tightened to spec then you will not feel any movement in your steering wheel. So, if your steering wheel is solid and does not move while driving then you can rule out a loose wheel bearing nut. It's possible that the wheel hub itself is not seated correctly. Maybe there is some gap or obstruction in the way? Also, have you looked at the rubber between your harmonic balancer? If it's bad that could be a cause of the vibration. I would suggest to remove the wheel hub again and reinstall everything from the beginning again. If that does not help, I would suggest asking the people on www.mbworld.org for solutions, or visiting a local certified Mercedes-Benz mechanic. I hope this helps.

Nice tutorial. I just did it on my w204, because the wheel hat little play, the car has 200 thousand km, i think it was about time. I set the gap to 0.01mm. One thing i did differently, i added way more grease in it. Literally filled the hub from inside. What is your opinion, too much grease can do harm? My thought was, it's better to have more grease than too little... The back seal ring supposed to keep it inside, away from ABS sensor, the outer cap will keep it inside as well. And the bearings will get enough grease if they need to. What is your opinion, can i leave it like that or should i take it apart and take out a little bit of grease? Thanks

Hello A.F. That's awesome! I'm glad you were able to change your bearings and hubs. Regarding grease. Too much won't hurt but it's not needed. The most important thing is that the bearings are packed with grease and not just coated with grease. I hope this helps. Cheers!

@GarageDynamics

Hello Chocoletchiccc! The hubs are interchangeable. Meaning there isn't a left and a right side. The most important things to consider is that you place the small bearing race in the hub correctly because it is tapered. Hello VonGutenburgen Steinenhoffer! I'm not sure what the torque specs would be for the w210 e class. I would suggest asking some of the members on www.mbworld.org. Would this work on a 08 ml63? Do I need to do the last step? I was following pretty well until that last step.

Hello Guitarphil11! I'm not sure. I would check with everyone on the forums over at www.mbworld.org just to make sure. The last step that requires the use of the dial indicator tool is important because it prevents you from over tightening or under tightening the locking nut. The digital dial indicator make things a lot easier because you can set it to MM. This skips the US to Metric conversion step. I hope this helps. Cheers!

I think the transducers finally went out. It worked for a bit when I cleaned the plug connection, but died shortly after the video. I bought a new one off of amazon and it's great! I'll put a link in the description for you. Cheers!

Hello Akira Cornell! Yes, you can purchase the wheel bearings from RM European. www.rmeuropean.com/Products/2203300725-MFG842-V4003.aspx Also try, AutohausAZ. www.autohausaz.com/pn/30945 I hope this helps. Cheers!

Its much easier than pressing new bearings with makeshift tools. But here, a new bearing set is 14 euro. A complete hub from Delphi or Febi Bilstein is 186. The Optimal is 132.

I missed why you bought a new Hub. Packing the bearings by hand like you are doing is one way, and works good. There are bearings packers that work well also. I keep mine in a Coffee can to keep it clean. I have also seen people use a Zip lock sandwich bag to work the grease in the bearing. The Grease Seal should not have been installed into the Hub. Trying to put grease in the bearing with the Seal installed isn`t such a good idea. Should have done it like the outer bearing. Actually the Bearing and Seal should have been in separate packages in the Hub Box. Trying to remove the new seal and reuse will damage it. Bearings should have been washed to remove the factory grease, Iam 80 and all my years always read/heard to not mix greases. If the old bearings have not been let go and run dry, they can be cleaned and reused. Just check for pitting of the bearings and race`s., and bearing Cage`s. New Bearings with Race`s and new Grease seal`s are not all that expensive. RMEuropean site you posted, just look up your year car. Did mine, 82 240D W123, and they are $30 - $40 or so a set. When I buy an older used car, I just replace it all with new for peace of mind. Most all the Mercedes have the same Wheel bearing set up. You detailed and explained use of the Dial Indicator was great. When replacing the Calipers, use new Lock Tight on the Bolts.

THANK YOU for this video! You're about to save me over $900 in labor costs! The one question I have is: How necessary is the very last step with the dial machine for play? Is that something I can go without?

If you use a shifting spanner as heavy as his, just let the weight of the spanner set the final adjustment with the spanner at 3 o'clock. check for any play by hand and there should be no play at all. test fit the wheel and re check for play and if none, tighten the hex key 👍😊

How can the hub be removed so easily? Without Any effort needed? Will the wheel fly out during running? Only a nut is already enough to hold the wheel, the brake disc and everything? Is this true? or just a show? This can be very misleading. See other videos, how much effort they spent to remove the bearing out from the hub

So just buy the OEM bearings with oem grease and call it a day. The only way you should replace the bearing with Chinese junk is if you're going to sell it immediately. You're not going to get the quality of the German bearing which lasted hundreds of thousands of miles. It pays for itself.

Who is the manufacturer of this hub? Easy way to grease those bearings is to stuff them in a small plastic bag with grease and press it in.
