Just want to highlight a great response from one of our community @KPKENNEDY I took on a plot that was three quarters covered in bindweed.I dug the plot digging out as much as I could. THen went no dig with an extra thick mulch (4-6 inches 10-15 cm). First year was a nightmare! First job of the day was to walk the plot and remove any shoots with as much root as possible (got more out as thick mulch); Shoots were never allowed to be larger than a couple of centimetres. It was noticably weaker at the end of the year. Second year I did the same but it was much more managable. The third year I had a couple of shoots appear until about June. I have been bindweed free on that plot for four years now. I have taken on a second plot with some bindweed. I have never dug the plot except for tracing the bindweed roots. I just pull it out with as much root as possible as soon as it pops up. I have had this plot about three years and each year more and more of the beds are becoming bindweed free. The important thing is to pull it as soon as the leaves emerge. You use up its rather large energy store in its roots, that it puts into the new shoots gradully, if it cannot photosynthesise. Give it an inch and it will take a yard and regrow its roots, so you have to be consistent and regular in your weeding.

@@KPKENNEDY Excellent news and a great effort no doubt, the only thing is 60 years ago you worked 9 or 10 hours a day 6 days a week, you simply didn’t have the time or energy to worry about eradicating bindweed, you controlled it.

We don’t have issues with bindweed as bad here but we did move a huge compost box in the yard that had been there for years as soon as the sun hit the soil morning glory popped up 🤦🏼‍♀️. Have a good one Glen 👍, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

Yep, it's something we have to just manage, in a hedge it's even harder as it's almost impossible to get at the roots. I find this with couch grass as well, it loves to root down under all my fruit bushes. 🙄 I found an interesting article about the life of bindweed seeds: 😑😒Seeds can retain viability for at least 39 years when buried in soil. Seed sown at 20, 55 and 105 cm gave 41, 51 and 43% germination respectively after 10 years, 20, 43 and 51% at 30 years and --, 34 and 53% at 39 years

You will never get rid of bindweed completely! The roots of hedge bindweed, the one with the large white flowers, can grow down up to 5 metres! Field bindweed down to 2 metre. This is from the RHS website. It is best to remove the growth as soon as possible- the longer it's left to grow, the more energy it can put into its' roots and thus grow and spread. Be vigilant and removee growth and any root you can extract, as soon as you see it. Hope this info helps.

Definitely one to keep on top of, totally agree. My main plot was full of the stuff when I started years ago. Now all beds are clear but I will still find it growing on the edge of the planters.

@@veggiepatchideas my garden was full of it and bramble, but by being vigilant we have manged to keep it at bay. My new allotment, taken on last September, was also full of meadow bindweed, ( the pink and white flowered one), but we have adopted a no dig system and it seems to be working. We hardly have to do any weeding, bar pulling up the odd bit of bindweed, which comes up easily with root, as we put a 6 inch mulch over.

@@bewoodford2807 I did the same with no dig. It took two and a half years to eradiccate it. Been bindweed free on that plot for 4 years. The committee were thinking of not renting the plot out anymore as it was three quarters covered in bindweed. You will like nodig, fewer weeds, easier to manage and I have been accused of running a farm as the plot is so productive now. One of my two nodig plots won the best plot onsite last year. We are a medium sized allotment site with about 100 plots.
