Not sure… did you use a different stain on the rest of the spindles compared to the newel post? Why didn’t you strip the spindles? Looks like you stained or painted over them..

Definitely! We stripped the gloss off, that's primer you can see underneath them as they're clearly modern replacement spindles.👍

I noticed that you didn’t sand the wood under the railing which I think you just painted over the white? Is this ok to do or would it be better to strip paint and sand it first?

Depends on the surface! The spindles were already smooth and the paint I used is self priming, so wasn't necessary to sand. It all depends on whether they're smooth or need a good sanding.

How did you get rid of that dark thick stuff on the bottom? I’m at that stage and it’s a nightmare to scrape. Wondering if I can sand? I’m not going to paint just oil/varnish to keep the original wood
