What products and techniques do you use to deal with hard water spots? I look forward to hearing your thoughts...
@barbaralane9825

Two surprising and inexpensive products that remove hard water spots are Weimans glass cook top cleaner & polish (obviously made for glass so it doesn’t scratch) and something called The Original BeesWax (comes in aerosol can). I never would have believed that beeswax would clean glass, mirrors and stainless steel but it really surprised me. I’ve seen that non-marine products are generally far less expensive than marine.

Personaly, rain-x them, but during the season when we go for a fast rincing of the boat I am using a special « karcher » window cleaner that is a window blade combine with a « hoover » that will blow away the drops of water of the surface and will be contained into a small tank. Makes a big difference than the usual window blade.

@Barbara Lane Thank you for recommending these. I'm always interested to try out new products, and like you say, marine specific items often have a significant markup. Thank you for supporting the channel this year, and I hope you have a very Happy Christmas.

Hi Matt. This is nice video. Could you please tell some stuff about carpentry on board. What does exactly deckhand/ carpenter should fix and what type of skills better to learn in carpenter industry.
@WorkonaSuperyacht
@WorkonaSuperyacht 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Bogdan, and thank you as always for commenting. For a carpenter, here are my thoughts: Cabinetry skills would be a high priority. There is often a lot of custom furniture on board a super yacht, and the ability to repair, and/or modify it would be very useful. Varnish has long been used heavily on super yachts, both inside and out, and on some yachts this has given way to other finishes, such as lacquer. Either way, the ability to apply and repair these sorts of products would be an excellent skill to develop. Replacement of teak planks, and knowledge of the products used to prime and seal the joins between the teak. General carpentry skills, such as building new shelving for wash lockers and storage cupboards; building dock steps; working with engineers to cut holes in panel work for the installation of new components, such as speakers or AV/IT equipment; basically, an ability to turn your hand to anything, designing and building items as necessary to support the needs of the yacht. I hope that helps, and for anything I've missed, I welcome anyone else to contribute to this list. Thank you for supporting the channel, Bogdan, and I wish you a very Happy Christmas.

Hi Matt what courses would you recommend for someone wanting to go into the industry as a deckhand
@WorkonaSuperyacht
@WorkonaSuperyacht 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Josh. For a deckhand position, I recommend the STCW 2010 basic courses, RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA PWC Proficiency, and the RYA PWC Instructor. After that, I suggest you develop the skills learnt during these courses by getting some real-world experience. You may have to get a little creative, but I suggest some options in my How To Get A Job On A Yacht With NO EXPERIENCE video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYWpiq2ipsaBkM0

@@WorkonaSuperyacht thank you Matt but don't you need some experience for the rya pwc instructor?
@WorkonaSuperyacht
@WorkonaSuperyacht 4 жыл бұрын
@david Yes, the RYA says that you need to have 2 years experience; but, it doesn't state how much PWC riding you should have done in those 2 years. I suggest you speak to the school that you do your proficiency with, and ask them exactly what experience they require you to have before they will allow you to do the course. I only mention this one because it is valuable to yachts, and it's good to think about how you might attain the qualification as you work to make yourself more employable during the job search.

I love to compare your guides with my reality - I suppose to use LiquidShield (something like Rain-X) straight into dirty glass and clean it until it's.. clean. Well, "will be done boss!" I realise as well why I need to scrub teak along the grain instead of across - cause teak is already so damaged from previous cleaning that I wont get it clean across fast enough, so to speed it up we need to do it along, damaging it even more.. Anyway - it's good to see how to do it professionally!

After polishing the windows you should try any ceramic coating to protect the them.
@WorkonaSuperyacht
@WorkonaSuperyacht 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for suggesting this, maidenfan. I use Rain-X because it's cheap and widely available, but I'm always on the lookout for better products. I still have plenty of windows left to polish, so I might pick up a ceramic coating and do a comparison on how long they last.

what happens if your yacht has zero spot water treatment system
@WorkonaSuperyacht
@WorkonaSuperyacht 3 жыл бұрын
In this case, things would be much easier. I once met someone who had worked on a yacht with this system, because the majority of the superstructure was made from glass. He said it was amazing; you could wash and/or rinse the yacht, and there was no need to dry anything. The majority of yachts don't have this system, so other products such as these are required.

If you can’t find Rain X then an equally good product is RainAway. Also Meguiar’s Ultimate Quick DETAILER is great on painted, bright work, & even glass. It is a Hydrophobic Polymer Technology product that repels water & helps remove contaminates like dust, bird droppings & tree sap. Works great as I only wax once a year & use this after hand washing my vehicle. It beads off water for long periods even after many commercial car washes in winter snow, ice & salt conditions. It claims to be the missing link between washing & waxing.

Great video. As an Director of HSKP for luxury hotels., I'm always interested in the latest and greatest cleaning products. My favorite for water spots is a product called "Mineral Shock" made by ENVIROX. Although pricey, it is cheaper than the product you are using and comes ready to use, no mixing. Good also for removing rust, lime, mold/mildew and mineral salts and can be used on most surfaces. I'm in the USA so not sure you can get this product line but would HIGHLY recommend it if you can.

Thank you for sharing your experience, coastalstack. I just checked out the product you mentioned, but it isn't one I'm familiar with. For the most part, ship chandlers in the Mediterranean stock a typical range of brands and products, but I'm always interested to try others that may do a better job. If I ever see this on one of their shelves, I'll be sure to take a closer look.

What is a dried-up water spot?............lime and scale deposit, I occasionally have to take my shower head off and dip it into some Lime-away, you can watch it bubbling as it eats the lime and scale off. I also use it on the windows of my truck, spray it on and watch it bubble-off the lime-scale in minutes, wipe off and use glass cleaner, it makes the windows look new.
