A GREAT video. Wish SELDEN would produce an OFFICIAL video on the SAME procedure.

Thanks Tino for another great video. I feel quite confident now to remove the main sail and set it up again. Your videos are great and very informative and you always manage to explain it so simple. Looking forward to more videos (y)

as the sail halyard connection is in such a cramped space, a tip, use some "never seize" on the threads of the shackle, that way it's easy to remove the next time, but also perhaps a good idea to "wire in" the pin, on the hole in the shackle pin head, so it doesn't vibrate loose (and so you DON'T have to use Loctite on the thread, which will make it harder to remove).

Good Morning. Useful video , I need to remove my mainsail tomorrow. How long is your continuous line, and what is the size of rope you use? What tension do you put on the haliyard? Cheers

Thanks again Tino. I have exactly the same setup. But my halyard swivel is stuck in the down position. Help! I dropped and removed the mainsail. Now the halyard swivel is stuck between the 2 inspection ports. I cannot raise it.

I am thrilled to have discovered your video. Thanks for your efforts. Question: to reef before setting sail must you unfurl the main fully then reef in to shorten the sail. Or can unfurl the amount of sail I require? I hope you have the time to answer.
@twiper
@twiper 2 жыл бұрын
The furling system is made so you have two modes. In "free" you can furl the main in and out as desired with the endless rope. In "ratchet" it is only possible to furl the main in, the point with "ratchet" is the furl is locked in one direction so your main sail can't furl out in a storm. You don't have to furl the main sail all the way out to use "ratchet".

one tip, to save your sanity, use a "captive pin" shackle, that way you can't lose it, and makes the removal easier.

@16:49, you ALSO use the topping lift to support the boom weight while the sail is NOT set, for "rope" boom vangs, as with these 'loose' systems the boom WILL fall without topping lift tension. also this allows hydraulic vangs to be stored at low load/ pressure conditions enhancing life of rigging.
@bradgailer9802

Looks like your boom vang is upside down. Thick part usually goes to the top so it doesnt fill with water.

I wanted you to show how you control the spindle line and out haul simultaneously and on which winches during setting and unsettling the main. I have used the same never ending line and ratchet system you have, but in combination with what we call the German sheet system {double ended main sheet} and no cabin top winches. In that system the out haul is to port and never ending lines to the spindle are to starboard. Two people are needed to get it in and out. So I really don't like it.
@twiper
@twiper Жыл бұрын
Ok nice to know. I know "the german system" is on the new models of the Bavarias but I have never tried it. The old system has also got some critics over the years but for my use I think it's ok.
@ratusbagus
@ratusbagus Жыл бұрын
@@twiper The German system is great for accessing the mainsheet from the helm, especially with electric winches. But not if you're crew and and forward of the winch. Also not great for self tacking jib..... which has only one sheet that half the time must share the mainsheet winch (on starboard tack in the case of this particular jeanneau 410). That winch is also used by the never ending in boom line. So on this boat I spend a lot of time squeezed behind the helmsman, scrunched over that winch. So combination of never ending line furling and German mainsheet and self tacking..... Is the pits. IMHO

Hi Tino, Thank you for the video, I’m new to inmast furling and just wondered if you are at sea and want to take a reef do you also try and tighten the rod kicker to try and keep the sail straight at the leach. I have the same rod kicker and it does not support the mast when the topping lift is off, it drops onto the cockpit cover . That was very useful ,thank you again .
@twiper
@twiper 3 жыл бұрын
Think the gas damper inside your rodkicker is defective. I have a video how to change it, think a 1200N would be the best choice. Yes the rodkicker must be tight and the topping lift must be loose when reefing.

Tino Nice video but you did not mention how you tensioned the main Halyard before reefing in the sail. I use one of the pulleys at the base of the mast and lead the halyard trough the sprayhood window and tension up the halyard using one of the winches on the cockpit roof. I found that `I could not get sufficient tension by just pulling the halyard through the mast clutch even when using my foot in a loop of the line. My system requires that you have to unreeve one of the lines at the base of the mast in order to provide the required pulley. In my case, I use the kicker line but it is a little tricky to pass the line back to the cockpit under the deck fairing. Hope this helps. Carry on with your useful Videos.
@twiper
@twiper 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) I did not tighten the main halyard crazy, it is also bad for the sail if it is to tight for a long period of time. If it wrinkles under sail it's too loose but for my use a good handtight halyard is enough.

how do you solve when it jams during reefing in strong winds?
@twiper
@twiper 4 жыл бұрын
I have not yet tried where it jams, think it jams more often when you have the version with sail battens.
@AndyLipsberg
@AndyLipsberg 4 жыл бұрын
@@twiper I have heard it jams if you reef down without enough tension, but same it might happen with regular mainsail.
