From Selden: Checking luff extrusion tension prior to stepping the mast The luff extrusion is correctly tensioned before leaving the factory, but tension can be re-checked before stepping the mast in the following manner. Lay the mast horizontally and check that the extrusion is just clear of the mast wall at its mid point. If adjustment is neccesary see points 1-5 below. If adjustment has to be made after the mast has been stepped, then the luff extrusion should be so tensioned that it does not beat against the mast wall when you grasp it throught the upper access hole and shake it. Most of the extrusion will be resting on the aft face of the sail compartment when sailing. DO NOT OVER-TENSION! A luff extrusion that is over-tensioned will require increased furling effort.

Thanks Ian! That was good. My problem is that my entire halyard swivel is stuck in the down position. It is stuck between the 2 big inspection ports.

Great info but .... how tight is right? How do I know when its the right tension. Selden manual says when the sliding sleeve "slips in your hand" which is unclear.

thank you Ian. after seeing your video I was able to tension the inner foil on our selden mast. Just a quick question though: I was able to lift the part with the red labol up (like you did in the video) but tha cylinder came up without unscrewing the set screw below the red labol. I was so excited to tension the inner foil and finally unfurl the main very easly now. Perhaps the set screw came undone buy itself and now no set screw in there.. What is going to happen if not set screw in there? It will come loose easly again or what do you think? Thank you in advance Leo

I have a 2011 Beneteau Sense with Selden rigging. I do have some issues with the main furling system. When I tried to do what you suggested here, I found out that mine is not exactly the same as yours. I could not see a set screw. And the piece that slides up does not seem to be there. My drum bushing seems to be worn also because the drum wobbles when I turn it. Can the drum be removed without bringing down the sail? Or what do you do here? You do not specify whether the sail is furled or removed. Hard to tell. Any suggestions will help. Thanks

Hi, not sure if you can help. We have a Beneteau Sense 55 with inmast main. It has started to bunch and jam only when the mainsail is pulled out. We noticed the sliding sleeve which stops the halyard swivel from rattles around had broken, although we have managed to secure this in place. We do all the normal things when furling the mainsail back in with a taught outhaul etc. Our only thought now is, the top of the mast is curved too much and this is causing the bunching. The mainsail used to come out no problem at all. Any thoughts on something were are missing would be great.

So my sail is stuck (binding pinching) inside the mast and I can't roll the sail out with the outhaul...any tips on how to get the sail unstuck...? Best...SV Aquila Seattle

On my Selden system I tighten the in haul on the furling drum to tighten the sail roll then pull it out with the out haul and that usually works.

@@bravozulu8638 So...don't you have to take your main off the furler inside the mast and then tighten the furler first and then put the main back on the furler inside the mast to do this?
