thanks for the tip. A lot of these locking lugnut sets are pretty cheap, $9 - $20 range. Think I'd just buy another set to get the key, rather than 2-4 sockets to sacrifice. No risk of damage to your wheel or rim that way.

I remove a lot of lock lugs from auction cars and have been doing it this way for years. I recommend a good socket with a lifetime warranty because it eventually wears out from doing this that way it's replaced free every time.

Get yourself a breaker bar and a torque wrench
@mustangguy62427 жыл бұрын
I posted just now that the jumping may have been what broke the key in the first place. Those McGard locks are as much as the proper breaker bar and torque wrench would have been. Not to mention the risk of medical bills from injury, risk of wheel damage, and the fact that time is money. This $33 would be well spent: Breaker Bar: www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/sockets-ratchets/12-in-drive-25-in-breaker-bar-60819.html Torque wrench: www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-inch-drive-click-type-torque-wrench-62431.html

my friend called me one night at 1 am. to help him fix a flat. I was in my vehicle in the city and I was no where near my tools. we used an tire iron with a piece of wood duct taped to it for leverage..... it was a very cold hard fix for something that should have been easy. The next day I got a Johnson bar and a socket to fit my life and put it on my trunk it's still there lol.

If you're worried about accidentally smacking the rim with the hammer. use a short 1/2 inch extension on the socket. An old one if you've got it. And if you use a high quality socket, you probably won't do much damage to it.

Just a little piece of advice, next time you should have a need to do that again, use a "Cheater Bar" (piece of pipe) over the rachet handle to multiply the torquing force then, you won't have to work so hard to get it off.

If this process doesn't work, try the one I used (scott murphy - lug nut removal) good luck
@asphaltcowboy78684 жыл бұрын
I would definitely use a breaker-bar.. secondary.. I would only remove one lug nut and then go to the part store and buy a lugnut key that fits correctly for the rest of the remaining lugs.. why ruin a prefect socket and possibly strip every lugnut in the process.. this method may work but this probably just cost him 3 or 4, 19mm sockets, and 20 lug nuts.. which for a grand total of a $100 or more.. when keys are available for $20-$40.. and good for awhile???
@poboy9423 жыл бұрын
here it is 2021 now and you still cant buy the lugnut key by its self..you still have to buy a full set of lug nuts from the dealer to get the same key your car or truck came with .

Guys, just don't do this. Take you car to a tire shop and they have correct tools to do this. I tried this, one worked but scuffed my wheel. Other one cracked the lug and now much more work and expense to get off. These lugs are cheap pot metal and will crack off and then you got a much bigger problem. Only $10 a wheel at tire shop to have them remove correctly.
@samhain3607 жыл бұрын
Personally, I was a service advisor for Toyota... it would have only cost him the 50$ for a new set of wheel locks and we didn't charge for install/removal. I mean you ruin the socket, potentially multiple, and you need to buy 4 new lug nuts anyways... save yourself the trouble in my opinion.
@timbrown58407 жыл бұрын
It probably happened because some Neanderthal overtightened your nuts last time the tire was installed. I had this happen a few years ago. I had tires mounted by a local shop and I didn't find the problem until I was planning a 2500 mile round trip the next day. being the guy that I am, I decided to throw two new sets of pads on just because. When I broke the SECOND breaker bar using a three foot cheater, I returned to said local shop where HE broke THREE adaptors (3/8). He then broke out the torch and ended up cutting two nuts and destroying two studs. The rim was blemished too. He profusely apologized and promised a huge discount on any future labor. Boy, was I pissed.

But really get a breaker bar a 24" bar is like 12 bucks at harbor freight and also buy an impact socket the right size for your lugs and you will never use the crappy lug wrench that came with your car again. Finally take all those dumba$$ locks off and get regular lug nuts. A pro rim theif can pop those locks in 2 minutes anyway

That's what happens when you don't specify to your tire shop to torque down to specs those lug nuts. Normally they go full blast with an impact gun. And the impact gun having on average over 300ft lbs of torque and and an average light SUV only needing to be torqued to around 100ft lbs torque. On that point things will break. And the other big Nono is taking a sledge hammer to those lugs. Your beating the heck out of your wheel bearings. I personally would reordered that broken lock key.
