How to remove oil pan on 5.7 HEMI Dodge Charger, Challenger, Magnum, Chrysler 300 RWD

In this video I will show how to remove the oil pan while keeping the engine inside the car. This is an 08 Dodge Charger R/T. I am currently getting boosted with a single turbo and needed to remove the pan to add a turbo oil drain. It is recommended to replace the oil pan gasket when removing the pan.
It will be similar for other dodge and Chrysler hemi RWD vehicles!

@@colin7761 we did… for 2 and a half minutes as soon as I put it in park it stalled and I remember that one bolt that I never fully tightened… the cam bolt… oh well anyways I had a pretty tough time just getting the oil pan dropped (not fully removed) but decided to work around it instead since I’m gonna be doing this again soon could you think of any reason for the pan itself to be stuck I got all the underside bolts and 4-6 trans connecting bolts but me and my friend where doing pull-ups on it

Ahh sorry to hear bro! Believe me, I know how much of a pain this stuff can be. So you’re saying the pan is loose, just stick on something? The oil pan baffle plate is likely caught on the oil pickup tube. This is the tricky part of the job. I was only able to get the pan off when the engine was jacked up a bit due to the minimal clearance. Lmk if you need any more help if you ever get back to it. Take care 💯💯

How much did you torque the 15 mm bolts? And the 10 mm bolts?

The small ones are 9 ft lbs and 22 ft pounds for the bigger ones 💯💯🤝

do you recommend replacing the pickup tube gasket and pan gasket if someone were to only be replacing the oil pan?

The pickup tube gasket is ok to reuse if it’s in good condition. Just replacing the pan due to damage? It may be fine to just replace the pan if you are able to get the old one off without damaging the gasket. If the gasket is already leaking I’d replace it. In most circumstances it should be replaced. In some cases it can be reused if it’s in good enough condition. Thanks for the comment bro feel free to reach out with any other questions 💯💯🤝

You should if you can, that being said, mine were fine and I reused them. It’s not serious like a head bolt or anything. 💯💯🤝

You just want to make sure that the pickup tube goes inside under the little splash plate to make it easier to connect

I cranked it in clear flood mode for about 15 seconds twice. It’s generally recommended not to crank for more than 15 seconds at a time to avoid overheating the starter. Hope this helps bro! Sorry I’m a bit late with the reply. 💯💯

Few questions. I’m in the middle of doing my pan on my 09 300c and did you actually use a torque wrench or did you just tighten them to a good snug? Also did you put gasket maker with the gasket on as well? Or just the rtv in the 4 spots and gasket? Last question. If you used any type of rtv or gasket maker did you wait 24hrs to put oil in and start up?

Thanks for the comment bro! I used a torque wrench for the larger pan bolts, not on the smaller ones. With that being said I have been working on stuff for a while now and know how tight they should be. If you don’t have a torque wrench, it’s not the end of the world. Just tighten the bolts as close to spec as possible. The smaller ones don’t need to be as tight. The larger ones should be in a bit more. I did not use gasket maker because I only removed the pan and left the old gasket in place. It’s recommended to replace the gasket if the pan is removed. I didn’t remove or replace the gasket as I just needed to drop the pan for the oil return. If you do peel back the gasket from the engine block, be sure to clean the mating surface. When reinstalling the pan gasket put some gasket maker in the marked positions, this is an important step, it may leak if not. It’s not necessary to apply gasket maker all the way around but you may if you want. It is definitely recommended to wait at least 24 hours for the RTv before adding oil to decrease the chance of a leak. It should be safe after a few hours if you have to. It needs to be put on exactly how it was taken off. It is a little difficult when there’s not much clearance. Are you able to get any more clearance by jacking up the engine a bit?
