How to remove pet urine stains from hardwood floor with hydrogen peroxide

I had cardboard under a litter box on a wood floor and one of my cats peed on the cardboard, which soaked through to the wood and kept the floor wet. When I removed the cardboard the floor was still damp and had a dark stain. In this video I show the process of using hydrogen peroxide to lighten up the floor and remove the stain.

As an owner of 4 cats and a house with original hardwood floors on the 1st floor, THANK YOU. I had the exact same thing happen to me, but in like 6 spots. I can’t believe the stain is pulling out like this. It’s not going to look perfect when it’s done, but it’s definitely disguised. Thank you for showing us how the floor will continue to lighten, that’s a big deal. Ive since moved all litter boxes off of hardwood, and have protectors around their litter boxes still. Oh the joys of being a new adult!

Great video! A suggestion for quicker results: Place a shop cloth, old towel or layers of paper towels after using the peroxide. Then place a heavy object on top of the towel. This will soak up the urine as the peroxide works. (Make sure the heavy object is not a book or something that will absorb the odor. I used a heavy plastic mat.) Check frequently and replace with clean towels if the area is still wet. You will actually see the urine stain transferred from the wood to the towel. Keep doing this until no more urine stain shows up on the towel. Then spray an enzymatic stain & odor eliminator on the area and let dry. The enzymes biologically break up any remaining urine stain. I use Rocco & Roxie Stain & Odor Eliminator (there are others on the market but I have found this one to be the most effective and efficient. It also does not have an offensive odor.

Thank you for making extra effort to show the before and after images flashing after each attempt. Great visual context. I have a red oak floor that human urine really, really messed up. No harm in trying your method at this point and following up with that pet product to get at the enzymes if even a slight odor remains.

I am happy to say this is totally working, even after only 3 days I see a total difference. I reapplied the peroxide every 4 hours and put a cloth over it to ensure the peroxide soaks into the floor. I am going to stop reapplying the peroxide and see if it keeps lightening! I’m so grateful I came across this video.

Thanks for the video. Roommate's cat was peeing on a rug and was gone for a week and could smell it. Certainly helped. Just make sure to get it zeroed in with the stains because it discolored some of the unaffected spots.

Thanks a million for this tip. We have a stain from our cat that we used enzyme cleaner on and left for a few days to dry out. Using hydrogen peroxide on the stains has lightened the dark stops up nicely to the point we're waiting for it to dry out fully and will apply a new clear sealant to the floor.

This worked brilliantly for me. I had accidentally left some kind of cleaning bottle tucked in a corner and it stained the wood underneath, partly with water, maybe with whatever was in the bottle. I think I did this process over two days and started pretty conservatively. After you apply the peroxide, it will continue to work / lighten even after you take up the peroxide towel. I would say I got 90% improvement, and it is in a corner of a doorway - not something anyone would ever notice unless they were specifically looking

Wow! The use of the paper towel was ingenious. With it you can steer the peroxide to the exact spot. I especially found the fact that the floor had not been sanded helpful because my floor is a beautiful color and I was hopeful that I could remove the stain without a full sanding. I'm going to try it. Thank you for this great video. I watched several of them and this one is tops.

Kendall, if you haven't tried to put hay in their litter box, try it. We do that for my daughters rabbit and she only uses the box now. Rabbits like to munch on the hay while they go. Lol

Incredible results! After using baking soda/water on a spot once per day for three days, we got minimal results. After one day (actually less) using hydrogen peroxide on the spot, it was removed. Careful not to use too much as I could see how the actual wood finish would get removed completely requiring you to stain again.
