It depends, u can cut down into the roof or you can add insolation and create a slope just depends on what level the drains/scuppers are in, if they are too high you can't cut a channel it's only going to make it worse, anywho good video 🤙🏼

I have a row home and learned alot from you watching your videos. I have completed half of the roof because it has two angles. Front of house angle is completed but the other half the angle is perpendicular and the drain is puddling. I don't know if I will get an answer from you but I am thinking of building it up using bitumen cuts and lay them like a staircase so that when last piece down is highest point to the lowest point.

I'm a flat roofer and I've seen plenty of roofs that fail because of wind uplift as wind rolls over any surface it creates suction that's basic roofing

That is your theory. Yes there is a slight suction but not enough to lift a roof up, especially a Torch Down 2 layer roof. I have repaired many roofs from wind damage due to the North Easter in Connecticut and all of them lifted up on the sides where the facia or drip edge is. I saw a metal roof, old single ply torch down and several EPDM roofs that lifted up due to a weak perimeter.

I've seen a field seam fail on a home depot roof after a wind storm. Might something to it. Between plating the ISO and gluing your rubber down it really shouldn't be suctioning. It was a parapet so Def didn't gust under the membrane.

I hear you, but what building owner wont like more insulation to combat heating and cooling costs?
@FlatRoofDoctor
@FlatRoofDoctor 3 жыл бұрын
There is already more insulation than needed. Besides the insulation on top of the roof, they also have insulation on the inside above the drop ceilings.

Thanks for the great video! I have a flat roof with ponding on one corner. There are three layers and should be replaced probably soon. I've made sure the seams are filled and used the Henry's wet patch. However, I still get leaks into the building right where the ponding is. I've heard that with the asphalt roll type material it can leak right through the material if the water sits for a long time. Is that true? The top layer is about 20 years old. Also, to fix this, could I just cut the top layer from the ponding to the drip edge so the water flows off the roof? Seems like that would be the easiest fix. Or better to fill the pond with a filler of some sort? Thanks so much. Your videos are very informative. All best.

I have a modified bitumen roof with a couple of areas about 6x10 feet that pond between 1/2 and 1 inch of water . the roof has been this way for over 40 years and those areas are always what leaks and eventually necessitating total roof repair. They are also only a few feet away from the lower edge side of the roof ( maybe 3 inches fall over 30 feet with gutter on that side) Is there a leveling product that could be used to remove these low spots and then coat with something or put ,ore torch down over it ? Thanks in advance.
@FlatRoofDoctor
@FlatRoofDoctor 3 жыл бұрын
I strongly advise removing the hump to get water flow but if you want to fill the ponding area, then use 1/2" or 1" ISO boards and torch a new membrane over that.
@teekay1785
@teekay1785 3 жыл бұрын
@@FlatRoofDoctor Ok Thank you . There isnt really a hump just this place is lower. I will try the iso boards. I saw the roof leveling cemanticious fiber compound and just didn't think it was a great idea to use it. thanks again!!!

@@teekay1785 I have never tried that fiber stuff. But here is my take. Use anything to fill in. That fiber stuff might just be the thing. But the install a new membrane over it.

I actually hate flat roofs. If they would have just built the damn things with a decent slope you don't have these problems.... Maybe its cheaper at the start, but I think its more expensive in the long run to have a flat roof.

Didnt you say pounding on the roof is fine? And why such long screws?
@FlatRoofDoctor
@FlatRoofDoctor 3 жыл бұрын
Ponding? Water sitting on a Torch Down roof does not hurt the roof. But, when you have water ponding all over the roof, it will cause debris and leaves to collect, and then plant growth. Moskito breeding ground. Also, it looks very bad on my reputation if I leave a roof the way others did it. I like to improve water flow and make it less maintenance in the years to come. The long screws are so you can reach the metal decking to screw into which can be 4 to 6 inches deep below the insulation.
@Brandon-no3vc
@Brandon-no3vc 3 жыл бұрын
@@FlatRoofDoctor lol, ponding*. And true, it doesn't effect the longevity of the torch down or anything? And true how long of screws do you use and what kind of screws?

you are giving the wrong information to people, the reason you find some of the roof membrane floating is because there are different application systems and most likely the mechanically attached won't have to much glue because is held different, also EPDM is one of the proved long lasting systems, it all depends on the applicators, the job is not the best on my personal roofing professional opinion
@FlatRoofDoctor
@FlatRoofDoctor 3 жыл бұрын
The best EPDM roof and best installer does not make it a good roofing system. They have revised the adhesives for EPDM already 6 times since the 60's when EPDM was introduced. Why keep on changing the adhesives, tapes if it was so good. It takes 20 years to test a roofing systems reliability. The last revision for EPDM adhesives and Cover Tape was only a few years ago. That has not been proven. You have no clue on EPDM or any glues the way you talk
