How To Remove & Reinstall Ebikemotion Equipped Wheel

I carry a cheapo 8 mm hex key. I ditched the plastic cover on the chainstay with it's tiny screws and retain the power cord with a couple of velcro straps and some black electrical tape. So far, so good and far less hassle when you get a flat. I carry an aerosol/sealant inflator can too and will often try that first, even if I have to top up the air pressure with a mini-pump to keep going. I'd much prefer yanking the wheel to fix that flat at home rather than on-the-road!

Hi Alvin, Wished you used the Orbea Gain ;-) Wished you would have had a camera on the other side also (Switch between Motor cable side). What I wanted to see is how to remove the black cover to get to the plug. Lastly would like to see it done OFF the stand on the ground ;-) You know field work ;-) ....... My Gain's rear wheel has been on and off a few times but it wouldn't seat properly this time. I found a cable tie on the left side of the hub was knocked off. It sits in a small groove on hub and appears to hold the electric cable away from the spinning wheel/brake. X35 owners should have a replacement cable tie available in case yours gets knocked off in a wheel change.

Can the axle be changed? I'd like to use a Thule trailer but the 12mm axle is too thick...Thule sells a specific axle for classic bikes, not sure it's easily changed in ebikemotion system

Not that I'm aware of. The Ebikemotion hub is unique in that it uses two bolts on either side to tighten the wheel to the frame, and what Thule is offering is a different thru-axle than what comes in. We've seen a few people just attach the trailer hitch directly to the non-drive side bolt without any changes. That may work okay, or finding a longer bolt with the same thread pitch would likely work well too.

Thanks for the video. I want to use Thule Coaster XT trailer with Orbea Vibe H30 (not in my possession yet). The hitch has a 12mm dia hole but not sure about the axle length. Will there be enough space to accommodate the thickness of the hitch on the axle? Thanks

My Orbea Gain Rear wheel does not free wheel spin for more than a few seconds? On all of my road bikes I like to be able to do at least a one minute spin test, so is there anything that I can do to get this Orbea Gain wheel to spin loosely and freely? Why, because I want to be able to keep up with other riders who are not riding ebikes. Can you help and advise?

There will be some drag to be expected with any hub-mounted drive motor such as the one with the Ebikemotion X35. My understanding is that the additional drag in the stand comes from the magnets that help put the power down in the first place. There is no clutch to disengage the magnets, otherwise, the motor becomes heavier, more complicated, and I suspect less responsive. In short, I am not sure there is much you can do. The drag, in our experience, is not all that much more than an acoustic bike, far less than most of the other eroad or egravel bike systems we've tried, and not so much that a bit of electric assist can't be beneficial :)

It is possible, provided you adopt the rear hub to match the dropouts. It would be a 135mm spaced rear wheel, I believe.

for the time being the only option is a Shimano freehub. Not sure if or when they'll offer an XDR freehub.

What's the torque setting for the two bolts on the x35?

18-25 Nm is the typical setting we've found for these X35 drive units.

Not a bad idea! Removing the cassette from the hub motor wheel, however, is the same process as removing the cassette from any other bike with a Shimano freehub. You'll need a chain whip and cassette lockring tool to remove the cassette. Not too hard!

Thanks for sharing. Luckily I had watched before getting my first flat on my Scott Addict eRide. On that, though the rear derailleur wasn't fixed to the frame but was held in by the axle bolt (some bolt and nut mix up in the video btw!) and there was a sensor and cable in the derailleur. Very fiddly to get back together in the field.

We've seen that happen with a few bikes. We generally dig removable thru-axle threads because damaged thru-axle threads don't destroy your frame, but these ends definitely need to improve so that they stay in place.
