People like you are never happy. I am will to bet you never leave anything positive on on KZbin. It’s his home, they were very accommodating, he never told them how to do their job. He learned things he didn’t know. Because of this video, I saved myself about $10,000 replacing a flat roof. I have done roofing before. But never this type. So I thank Mr. Leeman.

But his torrent of requests to confirm his "no-shit" observations with oh-too-many statements about him was enough to make me jettison this ¼ of the way through. As a long time roofer I would not recommend this type of roof on a small deck like this. Good old torch down roof with fiberglass base is the best. Peel and Stick should have been installed over base sheet. The most important part of this project was not shown in this video, how the roof edges were secured. Was there mastic over roof edging ? Anyway, I wish the homeowner good luck with this roof, hopefully side and end lap seems seal perfectly otherwise in a few years water will work its way through the membranes. Gus from California.

One question I don't know where you guys are I'm assuming somewhere in the US. I'm a roofer in Canada with over 25 years experience don't you guys ever use elastico stick primer before laying out your peel and stick base a cap. It's the only way we ever do it and the laps on the cap sheet would get heat welded with a leister gun.

@@johnmichaelkarma how would you feel if your boss was standing over YOU With a camera ? I am confident in my CRAFTSMANSHIP . So your little outburst is waisted . I have been working on homes when the homeowner wants to watch or ask a few questions but when you have someone standing over you constantly it kinda makes you feel mistrusted . Sure watch the Guys work , but get on the roof with a camera ? Do you honestly think the boss is on jobs watching his guys ? No ... they told him he was filming and I’m sure he was uncomfortable . This is an assumption based off the guys body language . It’s very obvious he is uncomfortable . Anyway that was my point . Sure I said it in a humorous manor I didn’t realize how much it would get under a complete strangers skin more than his great job I’m sure your a blast to be around ha ha

@@Carpenters_Canvas "little outburst" hahahaha. When ya extrapolate the 30 minute vid over the many hours this job took to complete the few questions and the time for them are meaningless. I've done roofing and siding and I never minded a few questions during the process. It's called patience,which you evidently do not have, and it is the LEAST ya can do for the buyer of your service to help them understand the process and what they are paying for.I just completed,entirely by myself, a near identical job over my three season room and I am positive the quality of my workmanship is far better than if I paid a crew to "knock it out" while I sat inside feeding the cats. Perhaps you noticed the title of the vid you watched. Have a nice day.

I have been looking at a ton of videos (mostly from GAF and Mule-Hide) on installing either peel and stick "Mod Bit", or torch-down "Mod Bit". Home Depot and Lowes both have "Mod Bit" GAF Liberty peel and stick OR torch-down. You can choose your Mod Bit type between a SBS or an APP. SBS has more of a rubberized ingredient, and an APP has more of a plastic ingredient... but both are mod bits. They are about the same price and about the same expected life I think... which is 10 to 25 years depending on the number of layers (ie. plys) you put on. There is also EPDM and PVC types of flat roof material, but frankly I did not have the time to research those any more than 10 minutes. But THINK that for residential roofs, "mod bit" seems to be most popular now. Besides GAF, the only other brand I have researched is Mule-Hide. It seems just as good as GAF, and also has peel and stick and torch-on in SBS or APP. I have not made a final choice yet, but will decide soon after I talk to the Mule-Hide supply house in town. (If I get a chance I will let yall know which I end up going with and why.) You are suppose to roll on a black primer coat to the wood deck to activate the SA (Self Adhesive base sheet). This primer coat allows the base sheet to stick better. I am also seeing that you may NOT want to put on the SA base sheet directly onto the wood (as they did in the video)... even with the primer. Because it will be impossible to remove years from now on the next roof job. So you may need to replace the plywood deck! yikes!!! So, I am reading that you may want to put down the MA base sheet first (Mech Attached nail-down) as your FIRST PLY. It will save your wood deck from being destroyed on you NEXT roof replacement years from now. After your base sheet, you would next put on either a cap sheet, OR you could next put on a middle smooth ply sheet, and then a granular cap sheet. The more plys, the better... .and the more expensive. BTW ... Mule-Hide has a sheet that can be used as EITHER a base sheet OR as a cap sheet. It has a smooth top (NOT granulated) It is called "APP Torch Base/Cap". You torch it on. Not sure if GAF has something like that, or if it only comes as a torch-on. Like i said, i am not a roofer. Hopefully we hear from someone that knows this stuff. After researching the various materials and brands for an upcoming roof job, I now realize that getting the job done correctly, as THE MANUFACTURER CALLS FOR, is probably more important than the brand or specific type of material used. Great job on the video! It was good to see real-world roofing video. Those slick factory videos with that background music and fancy graphics are boring after the first 10. Thanks! Any tips or opinions on low slope roofing from an actual installer would be great if someone cares to share.

How do you determine whether you can lay the new roof over the old (assuming there’s only one existing layer) or if you need to tear up the old roof? If the plywood looks okay from underneath (no water stained or rot), does that mean it doesn’t need replacement?

Its never good roofing pratice to lay down any type roofing membrane directly over a wood deck,i would have installed a 1x6 around the perimeter then screwed down a 1 inch layer of rigid insulation like Nord Board which is a tar coated insulation ,laying the roofing membrane directly over the wood exposes the roof to future roof leaks from nails popping up through the membrane .

Then you would void the manufacturer's warranty which specifies direct to wood underlayment on rolled roofs: Read the manufacturer's instructions. They tell you not to mix in layments from other manufacturers. A lot of people have their own twist on things, but bear the manufacturer in mind when you double your cost adding extraneous layers of underlayment. At the end of the day, the results are all that matter and if this roof section lasts 50 years, then every critique here is false. TPO and EPDM go straight on wood. I personally am going with a single layer roof system and I am not paying for even a single layer of underlayment on wood. I fully accept the fact no roof lasts forever. The wood itself has a limited usable life and so also do all forms of bitumen regardless of how many layers of underlayment. Why stop with 1 layer of Nord? Add ten more layers to be absolutely sure it's waterproof. It's your money, not mine.
@michaelledford4751

@@dare2scheme904 No,using an approved rigid insulation will NOT void manufacturers warranty ,how else would you do an install over a Type A or Type B metal deck without using a rigid underlayment such as insulation ? You may fool goobers but any Journeyman Roofer will know better ,as for installing " 10 layers " of asphalt impregnated rigid insulation,that comment just proves your place profits ahead of longevity at all costs,how big is that roof 2 square & you cant afford 2 square of a barrier that will save the home owners heating & cooling costs,and act as a buffer between nails that work lose due to thermal shock & the roof membrane ,i know of not 1 membrane where insulation voids warranty ,not modified not pvc not hypalon not epdm not tremco or garland .
@dare2scheme904
@dare2scheme904 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelledford4751 what metal deck? I decided to use an Owens Corning single layer system. The instructions don't call for any underlayment on wood sheathing. If you need insulation, that would be a bonus accessory completely unnecessary to the core purpose of roofing. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of homes rely on thermal insulation between the interior ceiling and below the roofing sheaths, so it's clearly redundant to then spend extra money on an insulating base layer for a roof top. Every layer of material costs money and further doubles the amount of labor needed to complete the job. No wood roof lasts forever. No bitumen roofing lasts forever. It's simply part of the usable life cycle and normal maintenance of wood framed homes. You get at least 10 years out of bitumen, but if you paid extra for an unnecessary insulation base layer, then that also must be scrapped off and trashed when the bitumen inevitably fails. You go ahead and keep up-selling any suckers who will buy into your sales pitch. I'm not mad at you, but I would be hiring these Mexicans in this video, who will only charge me for what I ask for. I am only paying for a 1 layer system. When the day comes and I have $10,000 to blow on a roof, I'll go with clay or metal or concrete, but I'll never waste a dime on a 3-4 layer shingle roof: I don't do things the "American way". Building on wood is inevitably doomed to fail from jump street. However, wood, gypsum board and bitumen are all you guys are capable of understanding around here.
@michaelledford4751
@michaelledford4751 3 жыл бұрын
@@dare2scheme904 What metal deck ? Being that you dont know what Type A and Type B metal roof decking is tells me that you are not a professional commercial & industrial roofer whos went through a 5 year apprenticeship to become a Journeyman/Master Roofer,i have so ill explain . The Owens Corning peel & stick modified bitumen roofing system you want for the flat/low slope wood roof deck on your home is the exact same material that can be used to roof a large commercial building such as a shopping mall,or a massive industrial building complex such as a Ford Motors auto manufacturing plant ,both types of buildings roof decks will be Type A or Type B metal roof deck which both types of decking require atleast 1 layer of ISO rigid insulation to create a flat uniform surface for the material to bond to ,the rigid ISO foam insulation is attached to the roof decking using long self tapping screws through the center of 3 square " metal plates which hold the roof down ,moving along . Now on to the reason you should NEVER install a single ply roof membrane directly over nails irregardless of what some moron at Home Depot tells you,or what you read online ,#1 your wooden stick built home moves up & down as well as side to side with the change of seasons & temperature changes ,a wooden roof deck moves much more than any other area of the home which creates Nail Pops on a shingle roof that create roof leaks ,the 8 or 16 penny nails holding down the plywood roof deck on the flat roof on your home work lose at a much more prevalent ratio due to your flat roofing system being subjected to intense thermal shock most shingle roofs do not experience,mainly due to a well insulated high R factor attic space ,and a large free flowing air space below the shingle roof which prevents severe thermal shock ,the flat roof on your home if its anything like the roof shown here will experience heavy thermal shock, the space between your interior & exterior on your flat roof is a poorly insulated 6" plenum space which moves separately from your shingle roof,between the movement of your wooden roof deck and the effects of thermal conduction flat roofs of the design shown here have a nearly 100% rate of nails holding the roof deck down working there way up and through the roofing material ,the effects of thermal conduction & thermal shock are not my opinion ,both are quantifiable scientific facts which Owens Corning or GAF will explain in detail to you over the phone . The main reason the contractor in this video is first installing a self adhering modified base sheet before the layer of granulated cap sheet is because OC or GAF requires the base sheet be installed is to prevent the top layer of cap sheet from direct contact with deck fasteners such as 8 or 16d nails,the manufacturer is counting on the layers of reinforced fiberglass skrim sheet inside the bottom base sheet layer to prevent nails affected by expansion & contraction from working their way upwards & through the granulated cap sheet . Now on to reasons why a DIY guy like you or even a roofing contractor should always install at least 1 layer of rigid insulation on a flat roof deck before installing the roofing membrane layer/layers ,#1 the cost is minimal while the energy savings from a doubled or tripled R factor will decrease heating & cooling costs substantially ,#2 protecting the roofing membrane from heat loss drastically reduces thermal conduction & shock to the membrane which gives extended roof life ,and most importantly is #3 to increase the distance from decking/roofing nails and the roof membrane itself ,its not my opinion that wooden decked roofing systems that are insulated last years to decades longer than non insulated roofing membranes ,its 100% fact,without insulation & a wind cleat under the drip edge metal the 2 ply system shown here is only eligible for a 10 year " LDA " warranty or Limited Dollar Amount where nail pops are not covered ,by adding insulation the roof qualifies for a 20 year " NDL " or No Dollar Limit warranty with a manufacturer warranty inspection ,the issues i spoke of are 100% fact & your not getting advice from some wrapper reading yahoo who calls himself a roofer ,to this day my roofing crew is the only commercial & industrial roofing crew to be featured on the tv show Modern Marvels for completing the worlds largest sq ft roof lifted at one time ,,video link to my world record breaking roof project using the same 2 ply modified bitumen roofing system below . That's pretty much what the original installers thought also and that's also exactly where the leaks were located, at the joint transition, where everyone can clearly see the warped and blown up expanded sheaths. Surely when you install a roof without reinforcement at the transition, it makes dollars and cents for the guys who end up doing the leak repairs. The original installers "knew what they were doing" like you. Metal flashings are used with self adhesive roofing every time, surrounding roof elements as well as the drip edges and now you discovered they can also be used in valleys.
