How to remove roots & staining left by ivy without damaging the brick & mortar

Our house had ivy growing on it before we purchased it a couple of years ago. We removed the ivy but it left roots and staining on the surface of the brick that we wanted to clean. We tried power washing and scrubbing with a wire brush. Both were effective, but too harsh for the brick (it removed some of the original white wash finish.) We ended up using this method which was both effective and relatively easy.
Note: After the scraping and scrubbing, we did rinse the brick one more time, which I did not show in the video.

Thanks! I didn’t know that such remnants had to be removed. What would happen if they were left on the bricks?

Nothing will happen. It just doesn't look very good especially if the staining really shows on the brick, which it did in our case.
