How to remove seized or hard to remove spark plugs. Depending on your driving style or how your vehicle runs, this can affect how much carbon build up is in the combustion chamber. The carbon can build up and around the threads of the spark plugs, making them extremely hard to remove. Even without carbon build up, if the spark plugs have not been changed for an extremely long period of time, some auto manufacturers now have higher recommended maintenance intervals, corrosion can build up between the threads and the become seized. If the plugs are forced during removal, this can either lead to breaking off the spark plug or worse, damaging the threads in the head. #sparkplugs #engine #autorepair

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-penetrating oil
-deep sockets
-ratchet
-extensions
Procedure:
-most spark plugs tend to be quite hard to access so you can’t usually get any form of heat around the around
-sometimes you can use a light weight penetrating oil to allow it to soak over night, this will depend on the design again
-what I find works best is patience and working the plug back and forth
-as you can hear these plugs are squeaking during the removal process which isn’t a good sign as the threads are binding
-once I have broken the plug free, loosen it slightly until too much pressure builds up and then turn the spark plug in the opposite direction, tightening
-loosen the plug a little further than previously, then tight the spark plug again
-this method will help break down any corrosion or carbon build up, eventually allowing the spark plug to turn easier
-eventually it will become easier to loosen until the spark plug has been fully removed
-sometimes if you do need the assistance of heat, only remove any required engine covers and then start the engine with the spark plugs still connection
-this allows the materials to expand and this can help in the removal process
-just be careful not to burn your after when working on a hot engine
-other times if excessive carbon build up is known, use a fuel additive which can help remove that

You know I was very dismissive of this tutorial saying to myself that this gentleman is going to cause me to break off plugs in my engine causing me great expenditure. I began trying to remove the plugs and when I MOVED A HAIR AND GOT A BINDING, I INSTINCTIVELY said let me follow this guys instruction and tighten by going back the other way. I kept doing this about ten times and sure enough all of a sudden the stuck plug became free. So for all of the other plugs I am going to follow this gentleman's instruction because it works. Like he said, it takes patience but it pays off. Don't force, just keep going back and forth, loosening and tightening. This mechanic knows what he is talking about and doing. Thanks so much sir for your knowledge From a Doubter

I don't know anything about cars, but I wanted to learn a little. A few month after my Mom was charged over 1K to change 2 ignition coils, 6 spark plugs and a gasket, she got a misfire code on her #4 coil. I was not about to let her take it back to that shop that charged her almost her entire month's living budget. So, I decided this was a good starting point for me to learn a little about cars. She has a 2002 Ford Escape. I decided to change the spark plug and ignition coil in the #4 cylinder... I wasn't sure if the spark plug that the shop changed was causing the issue or if it was the coil. Anyway, I couldn't budge the spark plug at all! I tried this method, but it wouldn't budge. Granted, I'm a woman and I don't have that much upper body strength like you guys, but it didn't move at all... either direction. So, I did research and bought some PB Blaster. I let it sit over night and I tried again. Nothing. Not any movement at all. I sprayed more PB Blaster, waited another day, warmed the engine and again no movement. I almost gave up until I read someone's post laughing at a guy who used a vacuum cleaner tube to put over the socket wrench for leverage. I was desperate. I didn't have a vacuum tube, but I did have a curtain rod. I took it apart and slipped the socket wrench handle into the rod. I barely put any pressure on it and bam! It turned like butter! I was so happy. My neighbor friend told me that I could have broken the plug with this method due to torque or something like that, but whatever, it worked! I'm sure the PB Blaster stuff may have helped, but the trick to my success was leverage... I just wasn't getting any leverage on the wrench and my lack of strength didn't help. I thought I'd post this here in case I can help anyone. I'm sure some here will laugh at me and call me dumb for doing that, but if it helps someone then it’s worth it... I spent hours researching it and just couldn't understand why I couldn't budge the plug at all.

Changing plugs on a 1991 Ford F-150, 4.9 6cyl, 51000 miles. Not sure how long its been since the plugs were changed last. I pulled one of the wires and it came apart. So I ordered a set of those also. Just sprayed the plugs real good with PB Blaster to let soak over night. I’m really glad, I came across this video. First time doing this. The truck is new to me. That's interesting of the same truck same 4.9 liter, same issue but the last darn plug the more I unscrew it working back and forth it probably isn't even 1/4 the way threaded in now but gets very difficult, even going clockwise counterclockwise how many times and penetrating oil I hope this thing comes out without any wrecked threads... I miles shows about 150,000 and I could swear wires cap plugs everything looks original can't believe it 🙄

This is a great technique, didn’t think of it before. I got one spark plug stuck on my mom’s ‘07 Toyota Corolla and already broke some pieces 😬 of the porcelain. We left it soaking overnight with some W-40. I was thinking of dumping some dry ice to contract it just a bit. I’ll try this technique next. Ty Update: I was able to losen the seized spark plug using exactly your method after letting it soaking with penetrant oil overnight. The plug’s porcelain material partly broke so have to be real careful not to drop any pieces of it down the cylinder by using a vacuum cleaner sucking the broken parts out. I was thinking of bringing the piston to TDC before total removing the plug, that way if anything falls it’s right there. Really appreciate this video!

Put engine oil on plug thread. Also it may mean threads in head are slightly damaged and need to be cleaned with thread cleaner(not rethread as it removes material) or just use old plug break of the tip and saw its thread vertically in middle like some couple of first winds so it will create similar tool to thread cleaner. The split will allow any debris to come out and also allow it to push closer and go into thread gradually making its way.

Keep using a good penetrating oil on them, like pb blaster or seafoam deep creep. At night when the engine is cooled down soak them. Try removing them in the morning before you drive. Just keep doing that every day.

Aluminum (head) has a coefficient of expansion greater than that of steel (spark plugs) So crack them loose while the engine is hot, then when the engine has cooled remove them and replace and torque them.

Good tip unfortunately VW/Chrysler 2011 Routan with 3.6L VVT V6 cylinder #2 rear head is fuzed into the head, removed the spark plug tube and see dark brown burned deposits, tried the PB/WD/Actone/Laquer thinner/ over night no luck, factory had rounded off the hex of the spark plug so 5/8" thin wall deep socket just spins on it. think only thing to do is remove the head, put it on drill press, drill out the center of the spark plug then use LH screw remover to get plug out of the head, then use tap to clean up sparkplug hole and or tig weld to repair if needed. Even with tube out no way to get leverage 2" in the head. But thanks for the tips.

The best way to do it is get the engine hot and remove plug wires/coils and spay WD40 down towards the plug while engine is hot. With the engine being hot it will thin the penetrating oil, ensuring it affects as much of the spark plug thread as possible, then leave for 20 minutes. The engine should still be a little warm, and plugs should come out fine unless there is a serious corrosion issue.

@4DIYers
@4DIYers 6 жыл бұрын
I would recommend it. Some people also apply an anti seize, but most spark plug manufacturers also don't recommend it and some also have an anti seize coating/plating to prevent this from happening. Personally I'd avoid the excessive maintenance interval recommendation from some manufacturers. If you're doing the work yourself, replace them sooner rather than later. They're not overly expensive and when it's kept tip top, you'll most likely get that money back in fuel savings anyway.

how to get the carbon buildup out the spark plug well? without wd-40
@4DIYers

You could run a fuel additive which is specific for carbon build up or mist water into the intake while the engine is running. A little spirited driving can help clear out carbon too, in a controlled environment of course. Worst case scenario is removing the head.

No no no, don't use a torque wrench. If you're using longer leverage, there's a good chance you'll damage the threads or break the plugs. This takes feel and patience. Torque wrenches also aren't intended for excessive force. Use a johnson or breaker bar instead.

@@Funrunner008 that should work. But before that, heat it up with an acetylene/oxy torch. Make your you get good and hot around the plug before you squeeze the trigger and then make sure you give it full oxygen. And your going to need to see what your doing so no shield. More of a question than a suggestion, (not ignoring the freeing products), but because of expansion etc, would it help to run the engine to temperature, then chill the plug (somehow? Dry ice, regular ice?). That way the metal around the plug expands, but the plug contracts slightly. Put a box spanner over the plug and seal the engine end with a little silicone? Circulate iced water in it? Syringe in, syringe out? May be crazy or destructive. I don't know. Then quickly, follow the video. My Volvo 940 has seized plugs. The garage says it has a special machine to drill them out and then force fit new threaded inserts. Pricey I guess.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 3 жыл бұрын
It may work, however the biggest issue tends to be the carbon build up. A top quality penetrating oil usually works such as Kroil, then let it soak for a longer period of time. You can flip a "can of air" over and it'll spray out nitrogen. Typically new threaded inserts are just done with hand tools, they're called a heli-coil.

@4DIYers
@4DIYers 3 жыл бұрын
Adding Seafoam from the top probably won't make that much of a difference, you'd probably be better off running it through the intake while the engine is running. Misting water is also known to achieve the same effect, helping remove carbon. Unless you already have the head removed, then you can certainly soak the around the spark plug with Seafoam or carburetor cleaner.
