How to remove seized or hard to remove spark plugs. Depending on your driving style or how your vehicle runs, this can affect how much carbon build up is in the combustion chamber. The carbon can build up and around the threads of the spark plugs, making them extremely hard to remove. Even without carbon build up, if the spark plugs have not been changed for an extremely long period of time, some auto manufacturers now have higher recommended maintenance intervals, corrosion can build up between the threads and the become seized. If the plugs are forced during removal, this can either lead to breaking off the spark plug or worse, damaging the threads in the head. #sparkplugs #engine #autorepair

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-penetrating oil
-deep sockets
-ratchet
-extensions
Procedure:
-most spark plugs tend to be quite hard to access so you can’t usually get any form of heat around the around
-sometimes you can use a light weight penetrating oil to allow it to soak over night, this will depend on the design again
-what I find works best is patience and working the plug back and forth
-as you can hear these plugs are squeaking during the removal process which isn’t a good sign as the threads are binding
-once I have broken the plug free, loosen it slightly until too much pressure builds up and then turn the spark plug in the opposite direction, tightening
-loosen the plug a little further than previously, then tight the spark plug again
-this method will help break down any corrosion or carbon build up, eventually allowing the spark plug to turn easier
-eventually it will become easier to loosen until the spark plug has been fully removed
-sometimes if you do need the assistance of heat, only remove any required engine covers and then start the engine with the spark plugs still connection
-this allows the materials to expand and this can help in the removal process
-just be careful not to burn your after when working on a hot engine
-other times if excessive carbon build up is known, use a fuel additive which can help remove that
