ATTENTION: When wiping with alcohol, always test a small area first. Stop rubbing the area when you see the gummy film disappear. If the alcohol strips off too much paint, then the only other way is to use a no-scratch pot scrubber with WD-40, and it's a lot of work. Thanks guys!

Thanks for the video. I tried Isopropanol and WD-40 both on an older Visio remote. I ended up with a sticky mess worse than what I started with. I tried some Glue-away (by Homeline) I had on hand using the same "spray on cloth and wipe" technique. Wow!! A little elbow grease and all the rubber came off and I was left with a shiny black plastic back on my remote. I let it dry, wiped it off, and there was no odor. For a stubborn rubber coating you may give this goo gone clone a try. Good luck! :-)

Spot on, alcohol does not work all it does is softens the gunk which then becomes even more difficult to remove and worse flows into crevasses. Petrol or as you call it in the US Gasoline completely reduces the gunk to fluid which never hardens again. So after getting rid of most of it use some soapy liquid to remove the residue. I shouldn't have to say this but when working with flammable liquids like this wear gloves, do it away from naked flames, hot items and whatever else you do don't do it whilst an item is connected to the mains (AC) or a DC supply. Makes sure you’re in a well-ventilated space or outside is better and after the clean leave the item for the fuel to evaporate (I leave it outside in warm weather for 48 hours). And dispose of the rags after use properly not in the garbage/rubbish because it could cause a fire.
@fmphotooffice551329 күн бұрын
@@mikeorgan1993Instead of gasoline, reagent grade 100% isop. alc. evaporates quickly and is MUCH safer. (Of course also use gloves.) Though alcohol fumes are also flammable it's MUCH safer. Look for videos of when GASoline fumes crawl on the floor and ignite like a sheet of flame. It's truly frightening to see. It's also designed to be used as a HIGH ENERGY ignition fuel. IMO, DON'T MESS WITH gasoline. Regards.

I made sure to be very careful not to get to near the IR sending area in the front end. Scratching it would not be good and I don't want to have to buy an after market remote. I recently used 70% isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth to remove the gummy surface of an Ooma Telo (internet-based home phone system) with excellent results. As with anything, you need to be careful while scrubbing across surfaces between two open areas (holes for push buttons in my case) as I scraped with my thumb nail and took off the outer layer of colored plastic or paint or whatever right in between two push buttons, but that was my doing not the alcohol--the rest of the surface is shiny black again and not sticky at all.

Funny, I just did that on a Telo last night. I used Goo Gone, then alcohol. No matter what you use, it takes a while and you will need about 20min to do the job right on a larger component like the Ooma. Love my Oooma Premier Linx Uniden 2 line 12 headset home phone system.

Spray onto your plastic item (after you have removed or isolated it from other items). Allow to sit for a few minutes. Spray again and scrub with a plastic brush or mildly abrasive item that won't damage the finish. wash or wipe with water and viola. Done. The finish, in my experience, is such that you won't know the rubber coating was ever there.

The only thing I hate about this particular headset, as the rubberized coating is on most parts of the ear pieces and headband. Easier not to get products with these type of coatings, but unfortunately it seems to be popular among many "gaming" peripherals. However, if you must or have no choice, keeping the devices clean is the next best thing. Wipe them off often before and after use. Don't wait until it becomes "gummy" to try to clean it.

I've used another milder solution, that's any hand cream or similar with a high content of glycerin/glycerol (just read the composition) Just spread a tiny layer of cream on the sticky object with a cotton swab, let stay for a couple of minutes and then scrub the cream and the sticky layer together away with a compact and lintless cloth, trying to "swipe away" the sticky layer applying a bit of pressure. This is done best by working on smaller zones at a time rather than on whole surface, repeating process if needed. I found out it by trial-and-error, until I've found that glycerol seems to "combine" with the sticky matter allowing their easier removal. Please let me know if this trick worked for you also! 😀

I first used straight white vinegar on a paper towel which worked a little but not enough, so then used hand sanitizer which is 66% alcohol on a very soft old cloth, that worked well and much faster. I would have finished with silicone or Armor All but didn't have it so put a little WD40 on the cloth and wiped the radio. During this process no black stuff came off on the rag but the sticky came off. Looks and feels fine now ... but will the rubber continue to degrade?

I never saw this stickiness before 20 years ago, and it’s exclusive to parts made in China. Many items have switched to a harder plastic where this doesn’t happen. I hit on the 70% alcohol a few years ago, but not the WD-40 follow up so will add that step. Even with a heavily alcohol saturated rag on some items you have to go over them several times. I bought a bunch of those blue Harbor Freight puck lights years ago, and the first ones that came out were the worst for getting sticky. Thanks for the tip on the WD-40! 👍

More laborious, but I found you can remove it effectively with dry paper towels (any soft paper like toilet paper will do). You just have to apply pressure and go slow, and check the paper is collecting some residue. It takes a while (like up to an hour for a large item), but it does come off without using any solvents. Be careful not to tear or flake the paper because paper residues will make this process ineffective. Go very slowly while feeling the goo is being dragged by the paper and change towels now and then.

I used the tops of old socks that had cool patterns but the toes were ripped, I use the tops because there's a tight grip to hold over the ear pads. :)

Sir, I noticed that there was writing, in white text, on that piece, before you wiped it with the alcohol, so whatever you removed appears to have been some sort of Factory coating that didn't wear well, perhaps, that had the writing on top of it. Do you know of anything less harsh, but as effective as the alcohol, that you've tested? Thank you.

If you want to remove the gummy surface, you can't be too concerned about the removing any writing. The writing was on the plastic, below that miserable coating. WD-40 on a "no scratch" sponge is the only alternative. Thanks for watching

@@electronicsNmore Thanks. I was thinking that could have been specs, but even if it was, they can certainly be looked up again. Thanks for video, very helpful information.

Thanks for the excellent tips. Why does that surface get sticky are some time?

I'm not a chemist, but I would have to say it has to do with oxygen in the air breaking down the coating or humidity in the air

Any idea where to get replacement parts for that plastic connector being cleaned in the video? Got my cloud headest cleaned, but one of the connectors broke.

Cool it happens to Wacom pens too. Alcohol may react making things white. You can remove it with a good olive oil (I guess since plastic is made from crude oil, olive oil since it's an kind of oil too works with plastics' gunk) or a good glycerine soap by wiping with the soap then wiping it with water 4x as a kind of rinse. God bless.

That 'sticky substance' that keeps 'surfacing' on plastic components is a "molding aid" used to enhance the flow of molten plastic during the injection molding process - called **dioctylpthalate** - "DOP". DOP is soluable in light weight (EG. "3-in-One") oil. LONG TERM SOAKING the 'prelminarily' cleaned part in (warm) OIL will extract the DOP down 'deeper' in the plastic surface. Its OK to initially use a solvent to remove the on-the-surface DOP; but, to EXTRACT the DOP from down IN the surface you'll do best with light weight oil .... and it will take LONGER for the DOP to AGAIN migrate to the surface. :-)

That stuff is the invention of the devil... or done on purpose to make you buy new product. I've had to replace the keys on my Digitakt twice until i stripped off the coating and painted them. Great video.

I have an old Vado pocket camcorder that has (now) a gummy coating on it. I'VE tried alcohol and WD-40 and nothing removes it. I finally resorted to trying to scrape it off and it became an ugly mess. Nothing takes this goo off. I don't understand why they coat electronics with this coating. Good video, thanks for sharing.

Can you use this process with painted plastic that has turned gummy?

Nice video 👍 The WD40 finish makes the plastic shine…but wondering if that is toxic or not, to the skin…

This is a common problem on the switchgear in Upmarket Italian cars, of a certain age, Maserati being one... Unfortunately the symbols come off when cleaned but there are companies who will clean them and repaint and laser new labels, so don't give up hope...
