Hi D! Please take a moment to subscribe to my chanel if you haven't already, I appreciate the support! That is the good thing about having aluminum cranks, they don't need near as much heat to loosen up! Plus if you don't have a hair dryer or heat gun usually you can borrow one or they are cheap via my links!!

Great video. I ended up using boiling water, as I don't have a hair dryer, not ideal but worked. Didn't come off the first time, bit of WD40 helped.

@@D2WrenchWorksDIY haha, yeah it was a bit messy and not exactly ideal. You do what ya gotta. Poured out fine from the kettle, the trick was to catch it so it didn't make a mess and also not wash the grease out of the bottom bracket.

Guys I've been scratching my head with this problem of a stuck crank which I want to keep. But I've stripped the threads so in frustration I've tried bits of wood a small bearing puller but nope. I'll use a heatgun. You now have a new subby.👍👍

@D2WrenchWorksDIY
@D2WrenchWorksDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hi A B! Please take a moment to subscribe if you haven't already! I wouldn't use an air hammer on a frame you would want to keep lol, you don't want to weaken the frame. It's also ALOT of power lol, using a normal hammer and some taps it came right off. I didn't use any real swings on it because I didn't want to hurt anything but it still comes right off!

If I can’t get my crank puller to move, do you think I could use a cheater bar? I don’t want to break it. Also the little part that pushes the crank on my ccp2 came off when I pulled it out. I was able to snap it back in. Not sure if that means anything
@D2WrenchWorksDIY
@D2WrenchWorksDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob thanks for the comment please take a moment to subscribe if you haven’t already! What is the crankset and model (you can find model inside crank arm, by pedal hole) you are trying to remove? The ccp2 piece you are describing is crucial to pushing the crankset off the bottom bracket. If it was off when you removed the ccp2 I suspect it was binding in the crankset and not hitting the axle of the bottom bracket. You can definitely use a breaker bar though, there are times when the crank is really on there.

I also did a great build series off this frame too, I know it's not what purists like to see but I got this crank off in 5min lol. Hard to argue with the results, heat gun rules!

@@D2WrenchWorksDIY counter intuitive for my smoll brain at first since heat expend material I though it would stuck even harder but it find his way out instead hehe... kudo to you !
@D2WrenchWorksDIY
@D2WrenchWorksDIY 9 ай бұрын
No I totally feel you on that, especially being self taught haha but what the driving factor here is the different materials! The aluminum crank and steel axle from bottom bracket are expanding at different rates and the immense direct heat from the heat gun does it FAST to where it really comes apart with not much force. Well done on just using a hammer, I would add I bet you can use a long socket extension if you didn't want to damage the crank next time, then put the square end directly against the middle of the crank and hammer away!

I had success with this method using a hairdryer, but only on the second try. My tips: - Heat it up, and then spray in WD40 and leave it awhile, before trying again - When heating, don't rush it, I did that the first time, but second try I gave it 10 mins and then came off fairly easily.

Hi Greg! A $24,000 press sounds pretty wild lol I would probably try a hi-powered heatgun like I did before I put the entire bike in your oven, especially if you eat from that oven haha. It only took me about 5mins to get it off and about 15min of preheating with the heatgun.

Couldn't budge the crank on My ebike even with the correct crank removal tool. Tried heating it with a hair dryer and heated the removal tool with boiling water sprayed with wd40 and it came off easily. Gentle heat is the key! 👍
@D2WrenchWorksDIY
@D2WrenchWorksDIY Жыл бұрын
Gentle heat isn't a thing, I am sorry but it was clearly boiling water. I have no idea how a hair dryer is supposed to come close to the heavy duty heat gun I used and linked in the description, but if you do it just like I did it comes off in literal minutes on the first attempt. The boiling water suggestion by @lchap is definitely a GENIUS work around, if you have room for the mess and a place to do it. Also if you do the water trick, there is no need to spray it with wd40 after because wd40 is a water displacement, it is not a lubricant. You need intense heat and that just cools it, which shrinks the crank back down onto the axle.

you don't need a grinder, watch this :- kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpiufJuag5urd8k if you did want to cut it off a diamond circular saw tile cutter will go through it in minutes, you must let it cool after each minute so the diamonds do not strip off the edge, best way to cool it is to let it spin between cuts and it will pull cool air in as it spins. I cut through stainless steel with it.

Hi Robert, thanks for the comment! In the link you provide the guy actually uses an exact grinder I have haha. I think he does have a thinner plate on there instead of a grinding stone like I have but really anything that creates immense heat will get it off. It literally only took me 5mins to get it off with heat gun and some minor hammering though, I had all this in my garage already too.
