How To Remove Stuck Seatpost In Minutes With Slide Hammer

I show how to remove a seized seatpost from a bike frame using a 10lb slide hammer. I borrowed the slide hammer from a local auto parts store after paying a deposit. Be sure to get a 10lb slide hammer as I don't think a 5lb slide hammer will deliver enough force. The aluminum seat post was likely frozen in the steel frame due to galvanic corrosion. I had been spraying it liberally with Kano Kroil penetrating oil. I manged to unstick the seatpost in just a couple minutes. You may need to connect the slide hammer to the seat post in a different manner. Possibly drilling a hole through the side of the seatpost and attaching a chain on each side with a bolt going through the post. Or whatever works for your situation. It only took a couple minutes for me to remove the seapost. Now I can repair the bike. Your results may vary.

Galvanic corrosion is real. But to utilise a slide hammer to overcome a seized seatpost is an idea that's simple once you're seen it done. It's thinking up the idea that's the difficult part and that is where you prove yourself again as not only a brilliant mechanic but one with original ideas, improvising a solution to a specific problem. Many thanks for a great presentation.

I would just like to say how grateful I am for this video, thank you very much. I had a well and truly stuck seatpost, I'd tried everything else (other than caustic soda) and was about to give up hope. I had never even heard of a slide hammer until this video. I ordered one online, tried it and pop, out came the seatpost. Unbelievably simple but effective method.

I own 6 family bikes, and I'm going to pull all of them, polish the holes and the stems, and put them back together with anti-seize. With proper preventive maintenance (PM) this can be prevented. Thanks again. - gus

OMG 10 years ago, I had the same problem. I tried icing my seat post, heating my seat tube, prying open my seat tube opening w/ screwdriver and hammer, all kinds of lube-oil, light grease, WD40, etc. Nothing worked. I didn't try Draino or vicing my seat because I didn't want to destroy my saddle or destroy my frame's paint anymore. I ended up riding it as is. I didn't have that great tool or Kano Kroil penetrating oil. You are brilliant!!!!

The main task is to break the corrosive crud between frame and pillar. The vibration alone is probably part of the success and pull hammer effect deals with the extraction process. Must be the safest, least expensive, least destructive way to win out.

Although it involves a tad bit more prep and should the Morgan Hammer not budge the seat pipe it might be worth removing the crank-set and inverting the bike then "Liquid Wrench" the lower end of the galvanic adhesion so as to facilitate removal with less actual trauma to the seat mount assembly. With something less viscous like Liquid Wrench the added saturation greatly enhances the friction reduction component of the problem. By giving the bike a gravitational edge for the fluids propensity to run down hill once the two fluid levels meet a simple twist will often do the trick. The galvanic response can be mitigated to some degree by rotating the bike from inverted to upright and vise versa a few times with an occasional gentle tapping of the exterior of the seat tube with a rawhide mallet. More time consuming and perfect for overnight soak times when feasible. A hair dryer, or heat gun on low would also enhance the likelihood of success whilst lessening damage potential.

Also happened to me but in the aluminum frame and the carbon tube. I put wd40 between the tube and the aluminum frame (enough) to let it absorb and then fastening the frame and turning the seat it released. After taking off, I cleaned and re-lubricated both the carbon tube and inside the frame with wd40 and it was perfect. There was no need to cut or break anything.

First time I have seen this technique, and I have looked all over to remove seat posts. Excellent job. I really did not think it would come out - I realise the direction is good, but I thought some twisting would be necessary to break the bond. Do you think this is the best method for posts that are stuck the worst?

@robertmihalyfi4901

It was so satisfying to see it actually moved. I was not so lucky about a year ago. I've had a same type of seatpost, but it doesn't came out. We used chain hoist, rubber mallet, we heated it cooled it, and finally we pulled out the head of this seatpost from the actual tube. (the tube doesn't moved a hair). Then we lost the mounting hole, so we drilled one on the seat tube. (It was out about 1 1/2 inch) AND we managed to tear out this holle as well! At the end we unfortunately ruined the frame.

In this case, I can clean up and reuse the post. If it hadn't come out, I would have tried something. I would have sacrificed the post to spare the frame. I could have dissolved the post with drain cleaner (lye) which eats aluminum but won't hurt steel.

Lol i had a nice GT mountain bike with the same dam seat post .had it on the bike stand upside down .had the vice grips on it and hammered on the vice grips down ,and usually if its going to work thats how its going to work ,but not this time ,i hammered and hammered to no avail ,then the cradle seat portion popped out .then i hammered down (bike right side up on the floor ) hoping it would move down then i could hammer it up but again to no avail, of course by this time the post was pretty much mangled ..so then i had to move on to making slices in the post to try and twist the pieces ,then i had to move on to grinding it ..i had to get a drill exstention to put my grinding bit on ,my hope or plan was to grind it right down passed the fused section then i might be able to use another post to hit it ,knock it down .then i used a hock of sorts (your slide hammer might have worked here.)to bring the rest of it up . So it only took me 3 days of hammering and cutting and grinding but i got that 3'' bastard out lol . Man i just cant understand why they put an aluminum seat post in a steal frame ..tale about your chemical reactions

Aluminum parts on steel frame are the standard. Aluminum is a very light and very strong metal that works great for small parts, tubes and similar components. Nowadays aluminum has been replaced by carbon or titanium in the professional peloton, but it's still the most used metal for such parts. As for the frame, aluminum is not a good metal in my opinion. Light and sturdy, but uncomfortable and not fixable. Steel frames are very elastic, can be welded anywhere, by anyone, for a cheap price and steel still is one of the strongest alloys out there. Steel frame, aluminum components make for a great bike that doesn't cost a fortune and lasts decades...
