I’m doing this right now. I feel like the cam could have been slightly off but I’m not for certain on the tdc the lobes were straight up, the sprocket lines were not straight with the engine. Looks for absolute answers.

I wish I would have used red loctite as you recommended. I used blue thread locker. It seems one of bolts had came loose and now chain sprocket is only partly attached to camshaft with one badly damaged screw. All compartment is full with steel shavings, engine does not work as timing chain has jumped off sprocket. Thank you for the video.

Reinstalling my camshaft the XR650L, there is about 1-2 mm of play in the thrust axis of the camshaft, i.e. I can wiggle it between the locating dowel pins. Is this normal, and if not, any idea of some things to check? Love your videos, extremely helpful!
@NNKH2
@NNKH2 3 жыл бұрын
I couldn't say for 100% sure, but yes I would imagine a touch of play is normal there. It's possible if you look through the engine specifications for engine rebuild that you might be able to find a spec. And awesome, glad to hear that the videos were helpful

I’m looking at purchasing one of theses bikes. I found a 2003 xr650l with 2700.00 miles on it...looks to be in great shape. Asking price is $2800. Of what I have read so far I think a 2003 and a 2021 are pretty much the exact same bike other than color or graphics, is this correct? New 2021 models are $6999 list price if you can find one...

Hello, should the ignition be in T position when the piston is at the top?
@shokzzu3573
@shokzzu3573 3 жыл бұрын
At 6:25, is it also possible to thighten them otherwise. I will do it your way and check the alignement again before doing so. Today i tried first gear + rear brake and another try just holding the bolt with which you can turn the motor/crankshaft. Both my ways didn't work. The camshaft keeps turning while trying to thighten the screws untill i can't reach the bolt no more (turned more than 180°). Is it normal that my tries didn't work? :/ I'm not sure if i did something wrong because the camshaft was properly aligned on installation and when turning the motor everything works fine (Cam- and crankshaft) :) My Motor: NX650 RD02 1992 New camchain incl. sprockets + new piston/cylinder

I think the chain is not placed properly in the bottom of the motor 😕 I can turn the camshaft sprocket -> obviously the timing is off now, checked it today
@one_terrabike3151
@one_terrabike3151 3 жыл бұрын
Actually what you're encountering is fairly normal! Put a 17mm socket onto the shaft where you turn the engine over and hold it as you torque down the cam socket bolts. Let me know how that works 👌😁

@@shokzzu3573 Also here's a trick for getting that chain back onto the lower sprocket. Use a long thin wire that's very straight (or anything comparable...it just needs to be quite sturdy and not bend easy) and stick it down to where the lower sprocket is...a light will be helpful in letting you see it...just take your wire and push the chain back onto the sprocket and once it's on make sure you have a wire or something to keep the tension temporarily. Alternatively, you could remove the right case cover (side with clutch plates) and access the lower sprocket super easy 👍. Best of luck!

Do I have to set the Exhaust valves set on F mark and intakes valves on T mark? Any thoughts/ Thank you!

@NNKH2 2 жыл бұрын
Make sure that the decompression is disengaged. Rotate the engine over when you have the caps off also and check at various intervals if there's any play. My guess would be that you miss properly adjust the front exhaust valve that has the decompression mechanism on it

Hi, I have the same problem on my Honda NX500 Dominator. This motorcycle does not have a manual decompressor. Is it possible to repair the original automatic decompressor on the cam? Wouldn't it help to replace the 3 springs or rollers of the part closer to the chain? I've already changed the part of the decompressor under which the spring is embedded in the cam, but it didn't help. Here is a video with the engine running and I think the sound is exactly the same: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYqViH-PabWBe9k

What is your opinion on using. roller rocker arm and roller cam profile on this engine? For street I can't see it really being a worth while swapout VS costs and performance gains, for the cam though rollers are more efficient efficient. The R-rocker arms always a good idea regardless cam profile.

I don't personally think it's needed. These engines are extremely reliable as they are

It's also more parts to break. The bearings in the rollers can get worn out overtime. I see that a lot on the Chrysler 3.6 engine
