How to Remove the Intake Manifold on a BMW 335d M57 Diesel

4:46 do you have to turn the engine so that the valves are closed before scraping up the carbon from the ducts in the valve cover? Where do those ducts even go? I don't get it.

Pretty sure when I did it I did turn the engine. They are intake ducts
