How to Remove the lower unit on a Johnson GT 150

Removing the lower unit on my Johnson GT 150 so that I can replace the water Impeller

No need to remove the carburetors, fuel pumps. First, put the lower unit into reverse. This brong the shift shaft up, giving access to the screw in the linkage/sjift tod. Then you can use a long screw driver to break the screw loose, then use an expanding blade screw driver to remove the screw all the way out. You should be able to pick up one of these screw drivers at an auto parts store.

Thanks for sharing. I have the same exact engine. Not sure if I can tackle that one. My boat started beeping a warning at me yesterday. Probably impeller my guess. Thanks again brother!

Also I was able to leave fuel pump in tack and use a long flat head to reach it from the side if u put it right under fuel pump u can get to it then I used a 3/8ths open wrench to tighten it up

Thanks for the video had to drop the lower unit to fix gear case seal and water pump. Put it back water pump didn't pump......urghhhh! Took it off saw nothing wrong stabed it again started pumping lol idk sucks having to take everything off but I did it and it's working fine right now will take to lake and test it all soon

When going back in, the copper tube must slide into the opening of the water pump, or it will do what you described.

No one else that has done this job is indicated that it's that involved... Do you have the Clymers manual or the Johnson Evinrude repair manual...?

When installing the lower after taken off, it’s not engaging in gear. Prop free spins, no matter where the shifter is placed.

Hey bud to make the job so much easier just split the casing you can get rt to the shifting linkage you don't have to pull all the front of the motor

shari terrill well I was also rebuilding carbs but you do have to get behind the carb to take the shift linkage loose

hey man i know this was a while ago but do you remember what size socket you used to get that first screw/pin out for the shift linkage?

Quick question, did you have to undo both bolts that connected to the shift linkage or just the one on the outside you can see well? Trying to find a way without ripping everything out, since I’m not a mechanic haha
