Good video! I have 90 HP Evinrude built sometime around 1997. I am going to attempt this project. By the way, I saw on another video recommending removing the propeller to lighten the load. It will be very important for me as I have a 22 inch Raker Stainless Steel prop. One reason I kept searching for more videos and found yours was because it seemed like way too much work to pull the linkage and other components out of the way to get the shifter rod disconnected. Thanks much!

By undoing 4 more bolts you can easily remove half of the lower cowling for better access to the gear linkage.

Can you post the gasket seal and RTV adhesive you use. This video was very helpful

I have a 1986 SPL Johnson 88hp. I changed the water pump, BTW Thank you for the help, and put the outboard back together. I thought that I would try the shifting before I start it up and have found that when I put the shifter in forward the prop turns with some force in both directions. The same with the reverse. On my inboard Mercruiser if you put it in forward it will only turn one way, the same if yu put the shifter in revers it will only turn one way.. Is the outboard different seeing how with force it will turn in either direction? I just bought the boat and did not shift it after I found it would start and the compression in each cylinder was 118 to 223 psi in all 4 cylinders. I kind of scares me so I thought that I would ask you. Did I do something wrong putting it back together?

Have you looked at the top of the motor? There should be a round metal tag with the serial number stamped into it.

I’ve looked. It’s been a few years, but I never found a vin.
