If you live up north, especially where the roads are salted, there is a good chance that your bumper mounts are rusted out on your Volvo 850 or V70 wagon. This video will show you how to remove and install the bumper. It also shows the brackets that support the bumper in place.

Most helpful. Trying to mount a hitch on my 2000 XC 70. I stared at it a while and then came to UTube hoping you had addressed this. You are a real daysaver. I’d still be staring rather than wrenching. Or worse yet, I’d have broken something trying to disassemble the bumper. Good tip on getting the pop rivets before you tear it down. Couldn’t be happier that we apparently own the same car. My other Volvo is a 1968 1800S. Between you and my British Utube mentor specializing in the Amazons, I feel like I have mech angels at my elbow. Thanks for doing such a great job on these videos.

Thank You Robert! I live near Pittsburgh, so we do get the rust from salt and water. The bumper on my 94 850 wagon is draggin' as you described. I inspected it and found the mounts to be as soft as wet graham crackers. IDK why the bumper is still on there, but your video did answer a lot of questions I had about the structure of this bumper and what to expect if I try to fix it. I may just bolt up some support hooks or bolts to temporarily secure this thing as I am worried that it may fall off while driving. I know you said it won't fall off, but I'll probably do this just to be on the safe side. I will look for the brackets online, but I think we are going to get rid of this car anyway, so I may not. Great car, but I can't afford to spend too much more money on it. Best of luck in the South West.

Hi Robert- I hope you are well. Thanks You again for the great video. Due to to some physical problems that came up, I was unable to do this job myself, but I found a good shop in Coraopolis, PA that was willing to take on the task. It cost me about $345. $215 for for parts including a face bar, two brackets and all the associated hardware. The labor was $145 and that also included removal of an old rusty tow bar. It feels great to drive this car around now that it is solid again!

Part number for the blind rivets are 979878. The part number for bracket 3512570 has been superseded to 6816114. I was told at a Volvo dealership the brackets rusted due to galvanic corrosion. Steel and aluminium don't work to good together.

That is true, different metals in contact with each other will rust when water is introduced, unless one of the surfaces is painted or covered somehow. As you could see from the video, this car had NO RUST on the brackets. I have seen several southern cars with good brackets. Believe me, the northern salt and moisture has a lot to do with it.

Hi Robert, another very well done video. I have a Volvo S70 2000 Base and I have to replace the Rear Brake Dust Shield to have my hand brake work properly. Some hardware parts are attached to those back plates. The designed is poor in my opinion. Because the hand brake is a security system i am surpeise that Volvo did not design it to be more durable. Thank you very much for this helpful video! It helped a lot! Entry fee into the junk yard? Wow! If you end up not getting/finding a part do they fairly refund that entry fee? Sounds like those junk yards are simply letting greed drive them, kind of like the baggage fee sillyness craze that most airlines except Southwest charge. Every junk yard I go to in my area in NM does not charge an entry fee.

What part of NM are you located in? I'm in ABQ and the main one I visit there does charge $2. My guess is that they charge because people walk out of their heavier than they enter most of the time.

LOL, Most people hit grill to bumper. While they are on their brakes, the nose of their car is low and their bumper goes under the bumper of the car in front of them. It's an accident flaw. So the car in the back slides under the car in front, crashes their grill, radiator, ac condenser, transmission cooler. lights, finder, and hood (sometimes pushes that stuff into the motor and damages that stuff). Yes the Volvo does have a strong rear bumper but a car that dips doesn't help.

Robert, thanks for the instructions on how to replace the brackets. but isn't the real reason for the corrosion the contact between the steel brackets and the aluminium bumper bar? i've seen similar corrosion between aluminium (semi)trailer chassis and subframes once the plastic coating between them had worn through.

I wouldn't recommend cutting the rebar at all, it lessens the structural integrity of the rear bumper to do that! Otherwise great video. By the way I work at a body shop, sometimes we do need KZbin to figure out how to get something apart.
