Another nice video buddy. Poa is a constant pain… I renovated last knockings of 2022 and this year the poa was back properly worst than before the renovation… I use the kitchen fork method, and dug up probably well in excess of 300 plants earlier in the year… Poa seeds can lay dormant for years and then come to life as it’s an exceptionally opportunistic weed grass… you just gotta keep on top of it as we don’t have the luxury of pre-emergents like ‘over the pond’ and the only recently UK licensed product is way over the home owner budget… keep the videos coming. Love watching them 👍

Cheers! 👍🏻 The seeds lying dormant is a nightmare. I've had quite a lot of weed grass in the back this year, the front less so. It sometimes feels like a never-ending battle!

I turned my scarifier into a poor man’s verticutter by putting an edge on the blades with a grinder and then using on the 0mm setting so it doesn’t go into the soil, still does the same job as a scarifier but also will actually cut lateral growth like a verticutter. Works mint 👌

My lawn comes out from winter not bad, because we had less snow (Bavaria) have done my spring routine at Easter weekend and I was really happy. But now I heard about the poa annua and I find some small spots in my lawn also. Yesterday at 8 a. M. With dynamite to hunt this gras😅... Now I have some holes and it's raining for 6 days now and iam not happy. Greetings from Germany

Some good advice in the vid, thanks! Little tip for you too, if you drape the cable over your shoulders (back of your neck) it'll never get in the way of the mower - just gotta make sure you have it on the right side :)

Great vid! I think Daniel Hibbert is solely responsible in the increase in fork purchases in the UK recently 🤣 I've done exactly the same as this for the past month. I recently dropped the cut height to about 30mm & went on with the scarifier a little deeper than I usually dare. Then went back over again with the mower to pick everything up & cut the seed heads off. This time It does look like I got most of them! I then applied some bio boost, seaweed, liquid nitrogen & watered it all in. The lawn seems to have recovered well & I can barely see any POA now. The lawn is a little thinner, but with regular mowing I'm hoping that'll thicken up soon enough. * I wouldn't have done this in the heat, but the weather seems to be cooling down for a little while.

That's very true! We seem to have perfect conditions at the moment. The right amount of sun and rain. Long may it continue!

@@NoviceGardenerSeems at odds to want more rain as we live in the UK 🤣 But it's far better than tap water for the lawn (and it's free). I've pushed quite a bit of nitrogen into ours recently & in this weather with mowing every 3 days it's looking very good (apart from the patches I've just re-seeded (thanks to the dog)). Hopefully I've got as many seed heads as I could this season. Looks like the wind is mainly responsible here as the largest amount seem to be at the back end by the fence. Keep the videos up. By the way hows the patch out the front ( you killed off) looking?

It's definitely the best way! No one has noticed that there is one fork missing in the cutlery drawer yet 😅

The lower you cut the lower they will gro as well, however you will be able to spot them more easily as they can't hide under your tall grass.
@NoviceGardener Жыл бұрын
That's true - hoping it makes them easier to spot going forward!

Hi, Nice video thank you very much. What height are you cutting at?
@NoviceGardener Жыл бұрын
I'm cutting at just over 20mm now. It seems to be a decent height for this time of year, particularly with the weather we've got at the moment.

Just wondering what aspect your back lawn is? We live in a new build just like yours and have a north facing garden. After September time we have very little sunlight in the garden and was wondering if you could recommend a seed that would be resilient to this. In the spring/ summer months we have sunlight covering the lawn for the vast majority of the day.
@NoviceGardener Жыл бұрын
My lawn is easy facing. I find that I've got a similar problem when it gets to autumn too. You can get shady grass seed mixes which are more resilient once you get into winter. But to be honest, I've been using the A1 Lawn Premiership Pro seed for a couple of years now and the parts of the lawn that spend quite a bit of the day in the shade are often the best looking areas. I think part of it is that the clay soil doesn't dry up too much with it being in the shade and the grass looks class.
@grahammacklam4736 Жыл бұрын
The eternal poa problem 😂. As seen it's the seed heads and colour difference that stand out but it actually blends well once these are delt with. In this country what you have done is the best way of dealing with it but will periodically need to be repeated.

What height in mm is the hayter setting 3? I'm using the bosch rotak cordless on setting 5...50mm should I drop the height of mine down?
@NoviceGardener Жыл бұрын
3 on the Hayter is around 30mm, maybe slightly higher. If you drop it, do it over a week or so that it's less stressful on the plant.

The battle against Poa annua is lost from the moment people use ryegrass for domestic lawn. The best to eliminate the problem is creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera). Outcompetes Poa because of the way it propagates. Perfect for stripping and short cut, carpet like… and contrary to what people may think, not that demanding when compared with rye
@martinlogan8329 Жыл бұрын
Completely agree mate. But after having tried for 2 years to overseed bent in to my already mixed lawn (rye and fescues) I can confirm it doesn't really work! 😅 Best to kill it all off and start from scratch I have decided, as the rye just grows too tall too fast and stops the bent from having a chance to establish. Bent and fescues would probably be alright, but not bent and rye.
@johnsharpp2484 Жыл бұрын
@@martinlogan8329 agree, you have to kill first your lawn. Otherwise rye and fescue will prevent bents germination
@martinlogan8329 Жыл бұрын
@@johnsharpp2484 can I ask... I have a fairly poor soil and get tons of worm cast in the water seasons.... do you think the bent grass will hold up alright against it? I'm a bit concerned about my bent carpet being more vulnerable to squished worm casts than the rye grass... what do you think?
