You don't just look happier, you look healthier in this new apartment! I hope you will do a tour of your new apartment soon, would love to see more of it :) I calculated some of it into Euro's, kinda shocking the high prices... I rent a apartment for about 340 Euro a month, plus electricity, water, gas, insurance. My apartment is pretty big for just 1 person though, although I have a lot of junk that I need to sort out and trow out, I still don't use much of the house! haha (340.00 EUR = 47,166.66 JPY) 1.00 JPY = 0.00720732 EUR 50,000.00 JPY = 360.373 EUR 200,000.00 JPY = 1,441.70 EUR Pets do need their space, so with each pet you have your apartment will get bigger in side as well. Unfortunately many people do forget that. For example, putting a fish or turtle in a tiny bowl. It's very unhealthy for the animal, as human you don't wish to be locked up in a tiny bathroom either is it? So why does a pet need to suffer because someone does not think straight before getting a pet or a home. Something that keeps making me angry. You are obviously very caring for your pets, so no worries! haha :)

Hay Micaela Michaela My comment on 3:24 of this video. Did you know that renting an apartment on Long Island in New York State is a lot more expensive then renting an apartment in Japan? the cheapest apartment on Long Island is about 1,200 dollars a month. To live on Long Island buying a co-op is better but if you buy it all cash between $90,000 to $1000,000 you wont have a mortgage because the common charge is about around $500 to $700.

Really useful information; thank you for sharing this ^.^ The change in you is unbelievable! You clearly are so much happier and relaxed and its so nice to see! I had thought that the 'gift' to landlords had been slowly lost to time but having done a quick look again, I have now noted this. Certainly not cheap to move in Japan but then it isn't particularly cheap in the UK either; my last rented move cost close to £1,800 (350,000yen / $2,800) in deposits, cleaning fees and removal fees; ultimately renting is not cheap but is far easier than buying :) Another great video and as I said, so good to see you happy and well :) All the best! this concept of giving the landlord a gift is nuts. I was also told that sometimes the gift you give the landlord is just so you can apply for the apartment. The 300 dollar pet cleaning fee is not bad. in vancouver it can be much more. well I guess in vancouver rent is much more. I suggest buying in Japan as it is still affordable depending on where you are I guess.

+yellowchalkx I've used WiMAX for years and I never had a data limit on my WiMAX routers until recently, switching my plan I now have a cap. If I go over 3GB in three days they limit it until the end of the month? Which is ridiculous. But all other providers cap their internet too? And my friend has a WiMAX router (different model) but he never gets capped, so maybe I'm just on the wrong plan? I'll keep you posted ;-p

Can I ask a somewhat unusual question? So... I plan on going to a language school in Tokyo for a year and live in a sharehouse during that time. After that I'd like to stay in Japan and be an English teacher. So my question is: *If I continue living in a sharehouse, would employers look down on me for that?* The thing is saving up the money for my tuition and my first year of staying there (and apparantly I need to show I have a certain amount of savings to get a visa?) would be a *very* difficult thing on its own and I'm looking to make my life there cheaper in every possible way that I can. But would employers like, not take me seriously or something like that?
@Ciaela
@Ciaela 8 жыл бұрын
+essennagerry Do you have a university degree? You won't be able to become an English Teacher without a degree, and you won't get a degree from a language school. You can work part time on a student visa, but you won't be able to remain in Japan when you are no longer a student. The only exception being if you are qualified for a working holiday visa (not available to US passport holders or applicants over 30), then you could work in Japan for one year without a degree. The degree is required to present to immigration, not to the employer, so even if the English teaching job itself doesn't require University/College level education, the immigration bureau does.
@essennagerry
@essennagerry 8 жыл бұрын
+Micaela ミカエラ Wow, thank you so much! I'm finishing highschool and now it is decided that I'll get my degree before going to Japan. I researched and found that some teaching jobs only require you to be a native speaker or prove your level of English, but I didn't know the immigration needs this. Thank you so much! I think you saved me some trouble. ;)

These prices sound reasonable. In the UK, especially in cities (and I'm not even speaking about London which is even worse), we'd pay even more than this for most things. We also have to jump through hoop after hoop before geing accepted and even though you pay the agencies extortionate fees you get treated very poorly. Even if you don't end up finding a place, the agency will still keep take the fees.

Looking good in your nice new place, Micaela ! Awesome ! Interesting video too. I kind of guessed that the Japanese are very organized and have quite strict regulations for all types of things, and this video confirmed that. I find the personalized stamp thingie both very cute, but also surprising. A $300 cleaning fee for having a pet at your previous place ? LOL. I smell bullsh*t. Oh well... it is how it is :-)
@Ciaela
@Ciaela 9 жыл бұрын
Do you have pets? Let me tell you, I worked my hardest to clean that apartment when I left it, but I can't clean away the scratch marks on the doors, or the dog hair that's stuck between the cracks in the hardwood floor. I can't remove the stain on the floor from the time he opened a bottle of hair dye. Just like how children draw on the walls, put holes in things, etc, pets can cause damage that normally adult humans wouldn't. Mind you, if I was to call a cleaning service myself it probably wouldn't cost $300 for a small one-room apartment, but this way assures that the landlord won't come after me for any additional damage the pet may have caused. (For example he also ate he air conditioner remote, and I replaced it with a cheap third party one, etc.)
@iBug
@iBug 9 жыл бұрын
Micaela ミカエラ Oooh. I didn't see it that way. As you probably guessed, I do NOT have a pet, and I had no idea! And the goldfish I had as a kid, didn't shed too much hair and he didn't leave scratch marks on the door either. 😉 I guess I just (wrongly) assumed that Kit is the most calm and cutest dog who does nothing but lay around and look handsome 24/7. But sometimes, dogs just have to be dogs, and do _"dog things"_ . And there's nothing wrong with that. 🐕 Thanks for the reply and detailed explanation, Micaela. All of the sudden, $300 seems a lot more reasonable. I totally didn't think of Kit. For some reason, I had the mental image of a cleaning company bringing a SUPER fancy vacuum cleaner, running it for 5 minutes and then billing you $300.

Your space is nice, spacious and modern looking. Must be a newer building. I know Funkuoka isn't Tokyo prices, but that must be over $1000 to rent that space. Happy you found something nice finally.

I'm actually paying less than $1000/mo to live here! :-) Through negotiation I paid the up-front costs in full, but got the monthly rent discounted by $100/month, so I'll save $1200 a year I guess. But this building is very far removed from the city. It would be almost impossible to find something like this in Fukuoka City that allows pets.
@TubaBuddha
@TubaBuddha 9 жыл бұрын
Micaela ミカエラ So you got to keep your pets and sacrificed commute time to keep them. For a space that nice, it's probably worth it. And saving money is always nice. My only problem with the Japanese system, is that the deposit money by definition, is yours when you leave. NOT theirs. That is total bullshit. You already are just giving them money for the privilege of living there. Get you hands out of my pocket already.

Congrats on the new and nice place. It makes all the difference having some place comfortable that you can actually stretch out and relax in… no matter where you are but especially here in Japan, I think. In Sapporo, at least, the Key Money thing seems to be fading away. I have no idea if that`s just a Hokkaido or Sapporo thing but.. we haven`t needed to pay it for the last few apartments we`ve rented… luckily! Again.. Congrats on the new pad!! ;-)

I think it depends on the place. They will ask if you plan on living alone, and I've never had a room mate but I've said things like, "yeah I guess so, but if I had a boyfriend he might come over." And they were fine with stuff like that. I'm not sure about platonic room-mates sharing a one-room flat though.

Well I guess a lot of these "how to"s are fitting for every country like the more many you have and less pets you have the more likely you will be able to find something but the stuff about the Japanese "tradition" or rules was really interesting and I never expected that there were so many rules for Japan. I mean I'm from Germany and Germany loves bureaucracy but Japan beats it by that! XD (I know it sounds cliche but I got a lot of those rules how to rent a place from anime especially from はたらく魔王さま!) ^-^ Have a great time in your new apartment! :3

But in order to have a visa you either need to be a student, a spouse or a work visa holder basically. You will have a hard time doing anything with a tourist visa.

micaela! i have a question, don't you feel as if you have lost a part of your 'canadien' identity ? I mean since you moved to Japan so long ago, don't you feel that even when you speak English you are a japanese girl talking? I think that with every language we speak there's a personality attached to it, so I was just wondering c:

I go back to Canada pretty frequently and I never really forget the fact that I'm different (I'm constantly reminded of it in the way that people speak to me or look at me ;-)) so I never stop identifying as a Canadian. I don't think I'll ever consider myself Japanese :-)

Thank you so much. I am looking at houses to rent in Japan, because I plan on moving there in 2 years. And yeah trying to find one that accepts pets is hard I have a cat that I am not leaving. And some of the places don't need a guarantor so that is good but yeah key money and deposits ect wow.

I dunno if I want to. I don't think my place is ever going to be clean enough since I have two pets that are constantly messing things up as soon as I make things nice.. Ahah.

The TV is glued down with earthquake resistant tape, but yeah, the cat broke the first flatscreen I had (borrowed), so this one has extra accident insurance incase it happens again. Bwahah.

If you wanna save money for moving, you should negotiate with apartments owners. For example, you can say, "if you don't get deposit fee or key fee from me, I will decide to move the room." Actually, even rent fee is also negotiable.

Yeah! I forgot to mention that. I negotiated one month free rent and 5000en cheaper rent overall, but I still had to pay expensive shiki-kin and rei-kin ahahha

I don't see why people think things are expensive in Japan if u convert it back to ur currency (mine being gbp) it's just the same as back in ur country I currently pay £400 a month and I think I could easily find somewhere for as much (if not cheaper) in total through the right channels (legit of course)
