Hi Micaela! You probably don't remember me, I talked to you once on facebook. I just wanted to say how watching your videos have really changed my life! I watched the one about your senmon school FSM many years ago and I made up my mind that I was gonna do the same! I applied for OSM and have studied there for 2 years, will be going into my 3rd year this coming year. Your best advice to me was to utilise every visa available to keep staying in Japan and I've just been doing that. From high school exchange to university exchange to senmon gakkou. Watching this video reminded me how great your advice is and that they do change people's lives!! Thank you so much!!

Hey Micaela, good info, I 'Liked' it! I just wanted to mention, since for tours (I know this isn't a tour video, but sometimes people only go with what they first hear about), I heard you mention only Intrepid. I've never taken Intrepid, & maybe they have many tour guides of different professionalism, but I would never take an Intrepid tour since when I went to Japan in 2014 my group (Inside Japan Tours) stayed at the same guest house in Hakone as an Intrepid group. My group had a solid plan of where we were going/what we were seeing for half the day, with most late afternoons and evenings free to explore on our own, and I liked the balance. We were on a bus on our way into Hakone, when this floozy girl (Intrepid guide), starts asking our guide what there is to do in Hakone, AND where we were going next, because she "didn't really have a plan". WHAT?? These people paid thousands, to be led around by a girl with no plan. That's just, NO. Please travelers, just research before you go! ;*
@Ciaela
@Ciaela 9 жыл бұрын
Maybe she just was looking for other ideas though? There's lots to do in Hakone even without a plan (I've done a media shoot there and we basically wandered around with no plan either.) I have a friend from high school who works for intrepid as a guide and she loves it, she's a great leadership skills, and is constantly visiting the same places over and over with different groups of people. And I think different customers have different vibes so you have to always rethink your itineraries a bit. Also my bud Andrew (gunnarolla) has done tons of trips with Contiki and absolutely enjoys them, but Contiki has an age limit (up to 30 years), and Intrepid doesn't, which is why I thought it was important to mention it. Thanks for mentioning Inside Japan Tours though, as I've never heard of them and I'm sure some people will look into them now thanks to your review :-)

Great info, thank you very much! I'm planning a two week trip this year and hoping for a much longer stay, hopefully in 2017, so its very timely for me. I see the NILS website has your pic and testimonial! I didn't know about the one and two year student visas for language study. Now I'm thinking it might be just right for me. Very exciting!
@Ciaela
@Ciaela 9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Schwartz Yeah, I went to NILS because I was paying my own school fees and they were the cheapest school in Fukuoka. I don't really talk about it because I'm sure there are better options for those who can afford it, and if you're only staying for a short amount of time I might suggest being closer to Fukuoka City. :)
@markschwartz1565
@markschwartz1565 9 жыл бұрын
+Micaela ミカエラ Ah, good to know. Yes, they are cheap, remarkably so. I could study there for two years for far less than it costs me to live for one in California. It's a factor for me as I'll be paying my own way, too. But, I've a good bit of money saved, and I don't know yet how long I'll want to stay, so it's not everything. Thanks again for the advice and the insight! I certainly want to look at as many options as I can find.

pretty much all my friends first start off as English teacher (High school or English school). If they want to switch their job, they just do job hunting while they are working as English teacher. It is actually advantage because, as she mentioned in video, English teacher has relatively lots of free time especially high school teacher ( you get a month off in winter and summer which is impossible for most of jobs in Japan). So you can spend lots of time for job hunting while you earn money as English teacher.

University exchange to Japan was amazing - but you really have to make an effort to go out of your comfort zone or you can be pulled into a vortex where you only speak to other exchange students. In some ways I preferred my high school exchange - it really helped that my conversational Japanese and my host family and class's english were at a kind of compatible level (aka my gaps in Japanese were filled by their English knowledge, and vice versa) which meant I could bond with people.

If you want to join a Japanese university you don't really need to be super fluent in Japanese. Some offer English courses (search for the "Global 30" Project for more details) for your entire 4 years (like my university) so many international students come with only basic hiragana/katakana but now have JLPT N3 or N2 certification after studying Japanese in uni. But if you want to enroll to study in Japanese, you will need to do the language school route or be very fluent.

My gosh Micaela look how young you were and how short you hair was! I got to Japan on the 4 week study program and it was perfect for me. I went through a program called CCI (Center for Cultural Interexchange) Once you pay the fee they set you up with a host family/familes (I had two during my month in Tokyo) and this included 2 meals per day and the school which was across from Tokyo Tower...yay! You also have to pay for your own airfare and whatever other food and expenses you have but once you're done with you classes the rest of the time is just you exploring Tokyo/Japan. I had the time of my life and highly recommend that as a way to not have to commit to staying but to have enough time to enjoy yourself and learn the language and meet people along the way.

I am not against those planned trips by interpid or whatever company. But they tend to be really expensive as you said. I myself have planned 3 weeks trip to japan with one week of traveling (Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima) and two weeks in Tokyo and it was great. I had a great time trying to find all the attractions, actually watching your videos and Abroadinjapan videos to get those less known and buying some tickets to "attractions" like J-word tokyo or Ghibli museum online. Accomandation is really easy to get actually thanks to internet and Flight Tickets from Czech Repulic to Japan are now around 250€ (With Turkish Airlines). So Japan has become a trip under 1000€ for 10days actually (for me, and that is the reason, why I am coming back this year :-) ) Thanks for the tips though! Might take some school courses.

Arriving in Tokyo by myself in May for two weeks, with zero Japanese experience. I can read hiragana and know two Kanji characters, tree (Ki) and book (Hon) and nothing else. A little scared, but I feel that the best way to immerse yourself in a culture is to jump in at the deep end. You're either going to come out of it with a fresh experience of a different way of life, or you're going to hate it so much that it puts you off going there again.

This reminds me I really should start planning my trip to Asia this year or it will be postponed again. Been pushing it forward for too long now (partly due to my studies here). Planning to spend 5 or 6 weeks on the other side of the world, about 2 of them in Japan but not on a tour, gonna try to do it on my own pace.
