Gerald "Jerry" Browning Snipes. He owned and worked at Snipes' Pawn Shop in downtown Rock Hill for over 30 years. He also co-owned and worked at American Carpet Installation with his nephew, Mike Price. In 1965 there is a Snipes Variety Store listed.

Thank you Kate! I knew there was a Snipes Army Navy surplus store in the parking lot behind us, that was tore down in the 70's, I didn't realize they had a pawn shop here too... back when I researched the title you could only go back so far online so the last I saw the church owned the building...

The font is a variation of "Moore Computer", which was a MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) font from the late 60's. Such computer fonts were commonly used in 70's pop culture to make things seem "futuristic". Also, there's a really fun book titled "Arcade Game Typography", which looks at the history of typefaces used in arcade games. Great video, as always!

Checks out. 🕵I pulled up the public sales records and Mr. Snipes sold that storefront to the First Baptist Church of Rock Hill in 1993. So that 👻writing is 29 years old! Ron your shop is haunted! Joe and Ron bought that storefront in 2012 too. Can't post the link, but you can search for the York County, SC Assessors office and pull it up.

Mohawk Spray Lacquer is a great top coat for acrylic touch up. It dries super fast, and can be rubbed out and or polished within a day. Far superior to clear enamel for these spot touch up.. Give it a try.

Thank you so much for this video. I own a SMDM and I love it. Unfortunately the playfield has seen better days, it has a lot of wear especially in the area you touched up. There is not much paint left actually. Until now I did not dare to try to try this by myself, but your video inspired me and I'll give it a go. I mean it's like you said it is an old machine and the result does not need to be perfect. But I'd like to give the game some of its former glory. Greetings from Germany!

Ron, thank you so much for doing these detailed videos! I'm touching up my first playfield because of your tutorials - a Williams Blue Chip. Yesterday I pulled everything off the playfield and cleaned it with a magic eraser, and then wiped it down with some Novus 1 on a rag - to get the chalky residue off. And today I mixed acrylic paints to match colors on the playfield. Wow! Can't believe I actually did this. Looks pretty good! Yeah, those black lines really sharpen things up! So I rushed out to pick up some Krylon Satin Crystal Clear. And tomorrow I'll clear coat those sections. (I did decide to lightly sand out some of those brush strokes, in one of the larger sections, with some 1500 wet/dry. Does the clear coat hide those brush strokes?) I never would have had the confidence to touch up a playfield without your help! Thanks again! PS: You helped me repair the flashing displays on my Son-in laws SS Mata Hari some time ago. I think your present numbering system (#4/6) for a series of a particular machine is a great way to do it. And titling each video with the work performed, helps me find what I'm looking for when I want to go back to review.
@KC_justme1
@KC_justme1 2 жыл бұрын
@Mr Guru Whoops, how did I miss that! I've watched so much. Well, fortunately I only had one large section and it had been lightly sanded because an insert was loose there to begin with. I had to do some work around the chipped hole and glue it back in. I ME'd the rest of the playfield again and touched up those small areas. Thanks for the info.

Search the address and check about 18 spots down. It’s an old real estate listing. It has a picture of the storefront at the time. It was a casket company at some point… maybe between Snipes Pawn Shop and Joe’s.

I suggest you edit the comments of each video of the series with links to each of the 6 videos. KZbin often suggest an old video yours but is is a middle video and after I watch it there is no link to the next one in the series. You can also make playlists of all 6 episodes and that may help. Watching your painting has finally motivated me to order some paint and fix up some beat up playfields too. Thanks for leading the way.

You give a fellow left hander hope that someday I might be able to paint withing the lines. I would call this a respectable touch up job that doesn't jump out at you and might not even be noticed. And I sure couldn't complain if I didn't choose to spend a ton of money getting it airbrushed. From what was sharpie to acrylic paint is a great improvement. I would be impressed with what you could do if I was the customer. So do you think that snipe hunters used to visit before you moved in?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe :) I've been researching this building and the ones around it for years, there was a place called Snipes Army Surplus that was in the building on the other side of the parking lot, that no longer exists (they tore the building down in the 70's!)... so I'd seen the "Snipes" on the window before but just figured it was some temporary thing they did for awhile, I never saw the deed because back when I searched you couldn't go back before about 1995 online...

One thing that can help with your edges is 3x5 cards. Use it to mask the line you don't want to paint. I do this since my hands are unsteady in fine detail and it really makes a difference and it's quicker then using masking tape. When painting yellow lay down a coat of white first it help with the yellow.

Great job... The blinking lights woulda messed up my mojo rounding around them... Dang that red is about a perfect match... I've had to touch up some faceplates for equipment... I struggle with the taller letters keeping the lines right (The dang font gets fatter at the bottom on a lot of the welders) {My Boss} "Why you using your left hand? Are you painting from the left to right?" {me} "I get a lot finer detail lefty than I do while clenching the brush with my butt cheeks... I also found it turns out better when I don't stick my hand in the wet paint as I'm working on it..." They'll never understand... Another great video, thanks for making your job harder by having to work around the camera for us to see.

Super easy way to get mylar off is to use a can of air duster spray upside down. When they’re upside down the freeze spray comes out really cold and freezes the glue under the Mylar and they pop right off with almost zero damage. I would think a little bit of dry ice from the supermarket or welding supply store would work just as well, if they sell that in your area

I think what you call "Vivid" would be described as the Saturation of the colour. :) Don't think it really matters what you call it though, we all know what you mean. I remember knowing someone who use to do painting and he would add a touch of blue to the white ceiling paint so when it "yellowed" over time it would end up staying more white. Not sure if it was worth it, but he use to swear by it :).

Hi Ron! Amazing work (as always) on the playfield touchup (I'm envious of your eye for color matching...) A question for the sake of my own curiosity; At what point did manufactures begin to clear coat the playfields themselves? I seem to recall some playfields featuring 'Diamond Plate' as a feature, and clear coating appears to be standard practice for newer machines, but when did it start?
