A fellow weight collector who prefers to remain anonymous shared the idea of painters triangles for soaking weights and I repurposed them for this project as well. The collector also shared the idea of wire brushing the center hole of the weight plates when finished.

Old weights are as good as new weights with a can of spray paint, as you've shown! Great vid

@vintageweightsPGH - do you have to oil the center area? I assume no because you oil the bar itself and don't want it slipping too much. I've got the rubber/plastic and traditional spring-type metal clips, but I haven't found an answer on the barbell sleeves and the actual inner openings of each weight plate. Thanks in advance - my first time rehabbing an entire weight set I inherited after my Dad passed.

If I’m oiling the plate, yes, I apply oil to the center hole. Since I wipe the excess oil off after a bit, I don’t find it to be too slippery. The purpose is to prevent rust in the center hole. Thanks so much for watching!

Good video. Old milled iron looks best oiled or painted with a thinned paint coat (compressor sprayed, not a can) IMHO. Your oiled plates looked super. Have you tried powder coating yet?

That's interesting concerning a thinned paint. I'd imagine it would benefit the milling. Mine are still prominently milled, but I'm always game to try a new method. I've looked into powder coating, but not yet tried. To be honest, my powder coated equipment and parts annoy me so I haven't been inspired to powdercoat anything.

One question I have is how durable can spray paint be? I think if the plates make contact with let's say rubber gym flooring over time the paint would come off.

I think primer helps. That’s why I like the two in one paint and primer. I also used to be impatient and only do one coat. Patience and many coats helps.
