How To Repair A Broken End of a Pull Start Recoil/Rewind Spring

If you have an end break on a pull start recoil spring on any small gas engine, you can easily repair the broken end of the spring by heating it up and putting a new bend in it. Works on lawnmowers, chainsaws string trimmers, pressure washers etc. I will show you how I do it.

I get it red hot and stop bending when it dulls and heat it again. Then I douse it in water when I have the shape done. Did my Husqvarna chainsaw clock spring last night and it came out perfect. Lasted 20 years from factory. Also don't forget to lube it all with a good synthetic grease at the wear points and center post. I wind it into the housing one turn at a time while holding firm. One extra loop of the string after it is engaged and good to go.

Are the “bends” in factory springs hardened? I suspect they may be treated as even using your method seems to result in the bend breaking soon after use. I suspect it may depend on the pulley set-up and the channel in the pulley that accepts the “bent” tang. I have tried some “spring hardening” methods for the bend and still get breakage after little use. Any ideas? Tnx
