Great tip. This would have been valuable for my friend on his canoe trip in Sweden when he got a similar hole in his canoe.

Good stuff, as a more permanent fix I’ve used pieces of a HDPE 5 gallon bucket, melted than spread on both sides.

Sadly, it is quite easy to find HDPLE in nature too.

@@haifutter4166agreed, where I live there’s a 30 mile stretch of freeway that oddly has so many buckets littered along the way. I’m sure at some point they make their way in to a creek and eventually the wilderness.

@@bubbaleon In Germany we have a deposit system for plastic bottles, which is why they aren't as ubiquitous, but you still find them now and them. Main problem is, that imported water bottles e.g. from Turkey are deposit free, so some people are too lazy to dispose of them properly.

Cool thanks man. I didn't know about the charcoal part. I thought you were going to use birch bark. Cool stuff.
@TheBearEssentials

You bet - birch bark in combination with this for a bigger hole - or (i haven't tried it - but birch tar works well im told) - is that what you use?

If only The Professor would have known this, he could have gotten them off the island so much sooner. The one time he attempted it, his glue wasn’t waterproof.

Great tip and how too. DJ but I have to ask, how did you damage the canoe? Nate
@TheBearEssentials
@TheBearEssentials 3 ай бұрын
I put a hole in it myself to test and demonstrate how to fix it. This was a canoe in rough shape to begin with that someone didn’t want anymore. So I took the opportunity to do it! (It’s not my main tripping canoe)

@@TheBearEssentialsjust out of curiosity, would a roll of duct tape be something worth carrying in backpacking because of its versatility like patching things and binding things and stuff?
@robintheoutside
@robintheoutside 3 ай бұрын
Maybe a silly question ... but does it matter if the canoe is wet (say it's raining)? Will it still bind?
@TheBearEssentials
@TheBearEssentials 3 ай бұрын
That’s a good question, and honestly I don’t know the answer to it - I dried it all out before doing this. I would say it probs will work with worse results? But that’s a guess

The resin is not water soluble and therefore the surface it's applied to needs to be dry, and preferably roughened up to provide a key. It's like applying car body filler. Same difference as they say.

Step one dry the canoe inside and out around the hole, step two apply some gorilla tape (or tenacious tape) over the hole inside and outside. Step three sit back and watch the muppet covered in sticky shit trying to light a fire.
