I finally see in this video what I have done to my fence. I cast these 3-1/2” x 3-1/2” x 5’-0” reinforced foster concrete posts and installed them next to wood posts. This is an eternal solution for a fence. When my wood posts get rotten, I will remove them and install new wood posts without digging holes in the soil.

Really useful video - succinct and full of good tips. I am about to do some repair work on my own fence: In your experience, how tall should the concrete spurs be as a proportion of the fence? My fence is 1.8m tall, so I’m thinking at least 1.2m spurs with 600mm protruding from the ground. Thoughts?

Quick question please! I have finished the job. Concrete was hell. Anyway, thanks for your tip on rotten post. It’s only 5 yrs old but it was sodden underground . I cut it out so no void when it rots totally. Now....I used 1 bag of concrete mix but the hole I made was a bit wide. I think it’s needs another 3 inches on top. If I score the new concrete tomorrow can I top up with half a bag or should I just leave it and compact the earth and shingle around it. The earth itself was bone dry. I don’t know what to do. I should have got 2 bags, oh well.... please advise me? Thanks 😊

Hi, great video (not so much re the weather). Is there any reason you can't set the spur in concrete 1st (making sure it is level etc) before fixing it to the post? I am unable to get to the other side to put up suppprts so thought I could fix the spur 1st, leave it to set for 48 hours or so and then pull the post level when running the bolts through the spur. Thanks

During the recent storms I had a fence post come away from the concrete spur, even though coach screws were used. I have now replaced post with 10mm coach bolts which go all the way through the wooden post and secured with nuts/washers.

Yes, I was surprised myself. Two coach screws, top coach screw was still silver colour, bottom coach screw was rusty colour so I assume water had raised up in the post so starting to rot the post. Can't complain, the post was 29years old!

I thought a spur of 100mm x 75mm x 1200 would be better but these aren't available locally (Cheshire), just wondered what you'd recommend.

Thumbs up , but where do you buy those concrete posts in USA. I just want to ad ,, setting wood in dirt and concrete is just stupidity. I do home remodeling and I'm just not a fan of treated lumber outside . Lots of chemicals are in it, they always rot and twist , they still need to be sealed other wise a few years later all that wood is wasted . Wood needs a proper roof and proper protection to last. I will try to find those concrete posts for the fence I need to repair .. Maybe they sell galvanized steel brackets that can be set inside the concrete??
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Thanks for the thumbs up ! Im not sure they sell these in the US. We also do a steel version and in sure you must be able to get something similar. We set in concrete and dirt all the time. If done correctly i can last many years. But it is full of chemicals and does tend to warp alot i agree. We always reccomend to treat the bottom of wooden posts to add to their longevity but customers dont often want to pay the extra cost.

Surely it would be far better using concrete posts in the first place rather than wooden posts ? (you can make your own)
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah its definitely more economic in the long run to use concrete posts but some people prefer wood and it is a cheaper initial outlay.

How did you get the concrete out
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
I used an electric concrete breaker but if you dont have one you can use a hammer and chisel or a big wrecking bar. You only need to break out half of the concrete.

@@JamesMontana would an SDS drill with a cold chisel attachment work mate? Might be an option for those guys that don’t have a breaker.

I would not use concrete around the post. If for some reason it needs to be removed it will be pain in the s. Fill sharp sand around post. If you will need to remove the post just use shop vacuum to suck all the sand out of hole, insert new post and put send back. Otherwise you did a great job ! thank you for the video

New post will going to rot the same way as the old one. Concrete spur will be there forever. And if you need to put a new fence you will using same spurs.

Way too much water. You're washing out the cement from the post mix. No water is needed at all as a matter of fact. It says so on post mix packages.

It's always going to be personal taste, but I would much prefer to learn something without the music in the background. Sure, there might be periods of silence, but listening to people speak is more important. But appreciate your reply.

@@terry6131 yeah i do totally understand. If youre trying to learn something the music can be off putting. Obviously id like to make videos in a way everyone likes but really im just trying to make up for my boring voice🤣 Maybe the next one ill try without music. Thanks for your input👍

This method will outlast any new wooden post and certainly outlast the fence. OK, it's not for everyone and it sounds like you don't like this method. I have used concrete spurs in the past. It's definitely easier and quicker than a replacement, probably doesn't look as good though. In my view it's a good option. You don't need to detach the fence from the post, so if you are on your own it's much more manageable.
